Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a small vanilla Java server, begin with about 4 GB of VPS RAM, a modern high-single-thread CPU, SSD or NVMe storage, a public IP address with the Minecraft port open, and control over the required Java runtime. Move to roughly 6–8 GB for more players, plugins, higher view distances or modpacks, and leave additional headroom for the operating system, backups and monitoring. There is no official player-to-RAM formula: the world, software and workload determine the real requirement.

What a Minecraft VPS actually needs to run
A VPS runs the dedicated server process, world files and supporting services. It does not render the game for players. That distinction matters because a headless server has no need for a gaming GPU, even though the Minecraft Java client has graphics-oriented requirements.

The server’s main tick thread repeatedly processes entities, redstone, block updates, AI and player actions. World generation and chunk loading also create bursts of CPU and storage activity. Backups, map rendering, monitoring and a control panel consume resources outside the Java heap. A suitable plan therefore combines memory capacity with fast individual CPU cores, low storage latency and predictable network access.
How much RAM does a Minecraft VPS need?
Practical starting tiers
The following are engineering starting points rather than Mojang-certified limits. Test the actual modpack, plugins and world because two servers with the same player count can have very different workloads.

| Workload | Starting VPS specification | Typical reasons to upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Small vanilla Java, about 1–5 active players | 4 GB RAM; modern high-single-thread CPU; SSD/NVMe; 2 vCPU or equivalent allocation; public IPv4 and firewall control | Exploration-heavy terrain generation, larger view or simulation distances, and local backups |
| Vanilla or light plugins, about 5–15 players | 6 GB RAM; strong CPU allocation; fast SSD/NVMe; scheduled snapshots or backups | Entity farms, redstone activity, higher distances and concurrent chunk generation |
| Modpack or plugin-heavy, about 10–20 players | 8–12 GB RAM; high single-thread performance plus extra cores for supporting work; NVMe; generous free storage | Large modpack footprints, pregeneration, entity-heavy areas, frequent saves and JVM overhead |
| Larger community or multiple worlds | 12–16 GB or more; dedicated or high-priority CPU; NVMe; automated backups; monitoring; possibly separate proxy or database services | Concurrent worlds, proxy layers, peak player bursts and stricter uptime requirements |
RAM assigned to Minecraft is not the VPS’s entire usable memory. Reserve capacity for the operating system, Java’s native memory, filesystem cache, monitoring, panels and backup tools. A plan advertised with 4 GB should not have all 4 GB committed to -Xmx.
Why player count alone is unreliable
Five players spread across unexplored terrain can generate more chunks than ten players standing in a prepared hub. Farms with many entities, redstone machines, high simulation distance and frequent autosaves all increase load. Mods may add hundreds of ticking systems, while plugins can perform database queries or scheduled tasks. Treat player counts in a plan as a starting estimate, not a guarantee.
CPU: prioritize fast cores over headline core counts
Minecraft’s main tick is sensitive to per-core performance. Prefer a recent CPU with high clock speed and strong instructions-per-cycle performance over a plan that advertises many slow or heavily shared cores. Additional vCPUs are useful for asynchronous chunk work, compression, garbage collection, backups and other services, but they do not compensate for a weak main thread.
Ask a host whether CPU resources are dedicated, high priority or routinely oversold. “Two vCPUs” can perform very differently depending on the underlying processor and contention from neighboring customers. During a trial, watch CPU steal time and tick duration while players explore and generate terrain; rising steal time indicates that the virtual machine is waiting for the host’s physical CPU.

Storage: SSD or NVMe is part of performance
Use SSD storage at minimum and NVMe when available. The server constantly reads and writes region files, player data, logs and scheduled saves. Fast random I/O reduces pauses during chunk loading and saving.
Choose capacity for the world, logs, maps, modpack files and several backup generations rather than only the initial server download. Keep free space available so filesystem performance and backups do not fail at the limit. Storage figures listed for the Bedrock package—180 MB to 1 GB in Mojang’s documentation—describe the software download and baseline installation, not the space a growing Java world or its backups will require.

Java versions and server software requirements
Match the JDK to the server build
Confirm that the VPS lets you install or select the exact Java version required by your server software. Paper’s current compatibility matrix lists Java 21 for Paper versions 1.20 through 1.21.11 and Java 25 for Paper 26.1 and later. The same documentation currently states that Paper requires at least Java 25, so follow the requirement shown for the specific Paper build you download rather than assuming one runtime works for every release.
A host that locks you to an older JRE can prevent startup or produce difficult-to-diagnose errors. Verify the runtime with java -version before uploading a world, and keep the selected JDK unchanged until you have confirmed plugin and mod compatibility.

Java client requirements are not server requirements
Mojang’s July 21, 2026 Java client update targets 1080p at 30 frames per second with 8 GB of system RAM and a four-core processor; it lists 12 GB when integrated graphics are used. Its recommended 1080p/60 FPS configuration lists 16 GB of RAM. Those figures describe a player’s graphical client. A VPS running a headless server does not need a gaming GPU or those client specifications.
Launching Paper deliberately
Paper’s example command is:
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui
-Xms sets the initial Java heap and -Xmx the maximum. Paper’s equal 4G values are an example, not a universal setting. Set them only after reserving memory for the VPS and its services, and adjust them when measurements show sustained heap pressure or excessive garbage-collection pauses.
Network, address and port requirements
Mojang’s server guidance says the official Java server software is free, requires a compatible Java installation, and may need firewall or port-forwarding configuration for outside players. On a VPS, this means a stable public address, a host firewall rule and permission from the provider to receive traffic on the configured port.
Open the default Java port
- Assign the VPS a public IPv4 address, or confirm that your chosen address is reachable from the players’ networks.
- In
server.properties, checkserver-port. Paper’s documented default is25565; change it only if another service or your security policy requires a different port. - Allow that TCP port in the VPS operating-system firewall and, if the provider has a separate network firewall, in its inbound rules as well.
- Start the server and test from a network outside the VPS. A local connection alone does not prove that remote players can reach it.
- Document the address, port and firewall rule so a restore or migration does not silently leave the server unreachable.
Low latency depends mainly on geography and routing. Select a region close to most players and test at busy times where possible. A powerful server in a distant region can feel worse than a smaller one nearby.

Paper settings that affect resource use
Paper documents these defaults: max-players=20, server-port=25565, simulation-distance=10, view-distance=10 and entity-broadcast-range-percentage=100. The defaults are not capacity promises. max-players is an admission limit; it does not ensure that the VPS can process 20 active players smoothly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- View distance: controls how many surrounding chunks are sent to each player. Raising it increases network, memory and chunk-work demand.
- Simulation distance: controls how far active game logic runs. Higher values increase ticking entities and block activity.
- Entity broadcast range: determines how far entities are sent to clients and can influence both bandwidth and perceived lag.
Start conservatively, observe tick time and memory while players travel and use farms, then raise one setting at a time. Do not increase all distances simply because the VPS has unused disk space; these settings primarily stress CPU, heap and network.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare VPS offers
| Comparison area | Questions to ask before ordering |
|---|---|
| JDK and version control | Can you run Java 21 or Java 25 as required by the exact Paper or other server build? Can you switch versions without reinstalling? |
| CPU quality | What processor generation is used, are vCPUs high priority, and how is contention handled? |
| RAM headroom | How much memory remains after the Java heap, OS, panel, monitoring and backups? |
| Storage and backups | Is storage SSD or NVMe? What are the quota, backup frequency, retention and restore procedure? Are copies stored off the VPS? |
| Network access | Do you receive a public IPv4 address, configurable firewall rules and permission to open the configured Minecraft port? |
| Region and latency | Is there a location near your players, and can you test routes during peak periods? |
| Software policy | Are the intended mods, plugins, automated backups and traffic patterns allowed? |
| Operations and support | Can you monitor resource use, resize quickly and obtain help during a failed boot or restore? |
Do not choose solely on advertised RAM or vCPU count. A slightly smaller plan with an uncongested modern CPU, NVMe storage and reliable backups can be more usable than a larger but oversold instance.
Backups, monitoring and safe operation
Schedule world backups before upgrades, mod changes and major exploration. Keep at least one copy away from the VPS so hardware failure or an account problem does not destroy both the live world and its backups. Confirm that you can restore a backup to a separate directory or test instance; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Best Value
Monitor the metrics that explain player complaints:
Recommended Free Tools
- Tick time: sustained slow ticks indicate that game logic is missing its target interval.
- CPU usage and steal time: high steal time points to host contention rather than a Minecraft setting.
- Heap usage and garbage collection: a full heap, repeated long collections or crashes suggest insufficient headroom or an inefficient workload.
- Disk latency and free space: slow writes or a nearly full volume can make saves and chunk loading pause.
- Network throughput and packet loss: saturation or loss affects login, chunk delivery and entity updates even when CPU is idle.
Bedrock VPS requirements are separate
Bedrock Dedicated Server is not interchangeable with the Java server. Mojang lists an Intel Core i3-3210 or AMD A8-7600-equivalent CPU, 4 GB of RAM and 180 MB to 1 GB of storage for the Bedrock package. Its documented Linux baseline is Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or newer; Windows support is Windows 10 build 15063 or newer or Windows Server 2016 or newer. Broadband connectivity is required, and Mojang notes that larger worlds and more players need additional resources.
Those figures are a baseline for the Bedrock software and a small workload, not a promise that every 4 GB VPS will handle a large world. Apply the same checks for CPU contention, storage growth, backups, firewall access and region latency.
When to resize the VPS
Resize after identifying the bottleneck rather than adding RAM automatically. If the main tick is slow while one core is saturated, move to faster or higher-priority CPU resources. If heap use remains near its limit and collections cause pauses, add RAM and increase the heap cautiously while preserving OS headroom. If pauses coincide with chunk saves, low free space or high disk latency, move to faster storage or a larger volume. If players report delayed chunk or entity updates while server timings are healthy, investigate bandwidth, packet loss and geographic distance.
For a new small Java world, a 4 GB modern VPS with NVMe and a correctly configured firewall is a sensible starting point. Plan an upgrade path to 6–8 GB before adding a substantial modpack, many plugins or higher distances, and consider 12–16 GB or more only when concurrent worlds, community peaks or supporting services justify it.
