Vexes are summoned by Evokers, not generated as a normal independent Overworld mob. In survival, you encounter them when an Evoker in a woodland mansion or a raid casts its summoning spell. Each spell creates three Vexes, which can pass through walls and floors, hit hard, and then disappear after roughly two minutes. The reliable answer is to kill the Evoker quickly, fight in open space with ranged attacks and a shield, and retreat when a swarm is not worth trading blows against.

What a Vex is
A Vex is a small hostile flying mob tied to an Evoker. It is part of the illager encounter rather than a routine creature that appears during ordinary nighttime mob spawning. The practical survival question is therefore not “where is the Vex biome?” but “where can I find the Evoker that creates one?”

Evokers are associated with two major survival encounters:
- Woodland mansions: Evokers can appear as part of the mansion’s hostile population.
- Raids: Evokers can join a raid wave, turning an already crowded fight into a Vex threat.
Mojang describes the Evoker as a Vex-summoning illager. Once the Evoker begins its summoning spell, the Vexes are a temporary extension of that enemy, not a separate population that normally establishes itself nearby.

How Vexes spawn in survival
Find an Evoker first
In a normal survival world, the dependable trigger is an Evoker in a woodland mansion or raid. You do not need to search for a special Vex-only structure, biome, or underground room. Locate the Evoker, and prepare for the spell before closing to melee range.
One spell creates three Vexes
An Evoker’s Vex spell summons three Vexes. That is the useful number to plan around for each casting: a single Evoker can immediately turn into a three-target aerial fight. If the Evoker remains alive and is able to cast again, another wave can follow, so killing the summoner is more important than slowly clearing the first group while leaving it untouched.

They are not ordinary natural spawns
Because Vexes are spell-created, standard hostile-mob assumptions can mislead you. Lighting up a room, waiting for a nighttime cycle, or trying to remove nearby spawnable blocks does not solve an Evoker encounter. The source of the danger is the living Evoker, and the combat solution is to interrupt that source.
Command- and spawn-egg-created Vexes are a separate case
Players can create mobs through commands or spawn eggs, but those tests should not automatically be treated as proof of survival behavior. Edition-specific references distinguish Evoker-summoned Vexes from Vexes created by other methods in some mechanics, including movement or lifespan details. If you are testing a map, farm, or command contraption, record the edition and game version instead of assuming the woodland-mansion rules apply unchanged.
What Vexes do once they exist
They fly through blocks
Vexes can pass through blocks, including walls and floors. A closed door, a thin partition, or a room one level above the fight is not a dependable safe zone. A Vex can approach from a direction you cannot see, emerge through a barrier, and force you into a melee exchange before you are ready.
This behavior changes the best retreat pattern. Move toward a space where you can see the ceiling, floor, and likely approach angles. Open courtyards, cleared mansion rooms, and raid staging areas are generally easier to manage than narrow hallways or a sealed corner. The goal is not to build a thicker bunker; it is to create sightlines and room to sidestep.

They are temporary
Survival combat references describe summoned Vexes as dying or despawning within about two minutes. The timer is a tactical resource: if the Evoker is dead and you can survive the remaining attacks, disengaging may be safer than chasing every Vex. Do not interpret the time limit as immunity. They can still deal lethal damage during that window, especially when several attack from different heights.
They usually are not a loot target
A woodland-mansion combat guide states that killed Vexes drop nothing. An edition-specific reference records a possible iron-sword drop in Bedrock, which is a reminder that equipment and drop behavior can differ by edition and version. Treat the mansion guide’s no-drop advice as the practical reason to avoid risky cleanup, not as a promise that every Java and Bedrock release has identical internals.
Vex damage, health, and edition caveats
There is no single universal stat line that should be copied across every Minecraft edition and release. Java and Bedrock can differ, and values can change as versions change. The following table separates the figures that are established for this guide from values that should not be guessed.
| Attribute | What you can use for planning | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Summons per Evoker spell | Three Vexes | The survival combat reference describes this as the Evoker’s Vex summon. |
| Movement through blocks | Yes | Walls and floors are not reliable protection; exact pathing details can vary by release. |
| Summoned lifespan | About two minutes | Reported for summoned Vexes in survival guides; not a guaranteed universal timer for every creation method. |
| Hard-difficulty attack damage | Up to 13 HP, or 6.5 hearts, in one cited guide | This is a Hard-difficulty attack-damage figure, not a universal health value for every edition or version. |
| Vex health | Not stated as a single cross-edition value here | Do not substitute the Hard attack-damage figure for health. |
| Java/Bedrock equipment and drops | Can differ | An edition-specific reference notes an iron-sword drop possibility in Bedrock; verify the target release before relying on it. |
| Command or spawn-egg behavior | Not automatically identical to Evoker summons | Some mechanics are tied specifically to Evoker-summoned Vexes. |
The 13-HP figure deserves special care. It means a reported Hard-difficulty attack can represent 6.5 hearts of damage; it does not mean a Vex has 13 HP of health, and it should not be presented as the value for Easy, Normal, Java, Bedrock, or every current patch.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to prepare before the Evoker casts
Preparation is most valuable before the first Vex appears. Use this checklist when you are entering a mansion room or approaching a raid wave:
- Bring a shield. Vexes are small, fast, and difficult to hit consistently. A raised shield gives you a response to a committed melee strike while you find the attacker.
- Carry a bow or another ranged option. Ranged damage lets you pressure the Evoker before the Vexes reach you and can finish a Vex without stepping into its attack path.
- Keep a melee weapon ready. A shield-and-melee counterattack is useful when a Vex enters close range or when a bow shot is unsafe.
- Leave yourself an escape route. Do not begin the fight with your back against a wall, in a one-block recess, or at the bottom of a staircase that you cannot quickly climb.
- Clear visual clutter where possible. Vexes can come through barriers, but removing unnecessary blocks and fighting in a larger room makes their movement easier to read.
- Protect your health and supplies. Because the cited Hard attack figure is high, enter with food, armor, and enough durability for the Evoker fight as well as the Vexes.
Step-by-step: the safest general strategy
1. Identify the Evoker and choose your ground
Before attacking, look for a position with a clear view and at least one route away from the room. In a mansion, that may mean backing into a larger chamber rather than fighting in a doorway. In a raid, use an open section of terrain or a cleared building interior instead of letting the Evoker pull you into a cramped house.

2. Target the Evoker immediately
The combat tutorial’s central recommendation is to kill the Evoker as soon as possible. Every second spent trading with Vexes while the summoner remains active gives the encounter a chance to become another wave. Put your first arrows, melee approach, or other reliable damage into the Evoker whenever you have a safe line.
3. Use distance while the line of sight is good
A bow is especially valuable at the start. Shoot the Evoker or an exposed Vex from a distance, then keep moving rather than standing still to admire the hit. The Evoker can continue casting while you reposition, so distance is a way to buy time, not a reason to stop watching the spellcaster.

Once Vexes are active, check the entire space instead of focusing on the crosshair alone. Their ability to pass through blocks means the last location you saw one is not necessarily the next location from which it attacks. Keep your camera moving, preserve peripheral awareness, and avoid backing into an obstacle that removes your sidestep.
5. Raise the shield when a Vex commits
The mansion guide recommends a shield because Vexes are both small and hard to hit. Use it to absorb or blunt the moment of contact, then counterattack after the Vex commits to its strike. Holding the shield permanently can prevent you from dealing damage or moving efficiently, so alternate between blocking, repositioning, and striking.
6. Reacquire the Evoker after every scramble
It is easy to tunnel-vision on the nearest flying target. After blocking or killing one Vex, look for the Evoker again. If it is still alive, return to it as soon as the path is safe. The strategic priority is the source of future waves, not a perfect kill order for the temporary escorts.
7. Disengage when the swarm is larger than the reward
If several Vexes are attacking from different angles, retreat through open terrain and create distance. The mansion guide specifically recommends fleeing and ignoring Vexes when you are overwhelmed because they provide no normal loot and expire. Keep the Evoker in mind: retreating from Vexes is useful only if you can eventually return to kill the summoner or safely leave the encounter.

Where the strategy changes by encounter
Woodland mansion rooms
Mansions encourage close-quarters mistakes. A hallway may look secure, but a Vex can pass through the surrounding structure and enter from the side or floor. Pull the fight into a larger room, remove visual obstructions if you can do so without exposing yourself, and keep a route to another room or exterior opening. Do not spend valuable time barricading a doorway as if it were a permanent mob-proof checkpoint.
Raid terrain
Raids add other hostile mobs, uneven ground, and the risk of losing track of the Evoker. Use a position that lets you see over terrain and retreat without jumping into a second threat. Ranged attacks are more important here because they let you damage the Evoker while avoiding a cluster of enemies. If Vexes reach you first, shield the immediate strike, move to open ground, and resume the search for the summoner.
Low health or poor equipment
When your health, armor, or weapon durability is already compromised, do not force a clean Vex kill. The cited Hard attack figure can remove 6.5 hearts in a single reported hit, so a “nearly dead” player is still in serious danger. Break contact, eat, repair or switch equipment if possible, and let the temporary Vexes expire while you avoid the Evoker’s line of sight. Returning to a live Evoker without a better plan simply restarts the cycle.
No bow or shield
Without a bow, close on the Evoker only when you have a clear route and enough room to retreat. Without a shield, movement becomes your primary defense: strafe in open space, attack after a Vex’s approach, and avoid corners. These alternatives are less forgiving, which makes killing the Evoker quickly even more important.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Hiding behind a wall: Vexes can pass through blocks. Move to a visible, open area instead.
- Chasing every Vex first: The Evoker can create more. Attack the summoner as soon as a safe shot or approach appears.
- Standing still with a drawn bow: The Evoker and Vexes punish stationary players. Shoot, then reposition.
- Fighting in a doorway: A doorway limits dodging while giving Vexes multiple blocked approaches. Back into a room with sightlines.
- Assuming a kill must happen immediately: Summoned Vexes last about two minutes and the mansion guide reports no drops. Retreating can be the correct tactical choice.
- Applying Java numbers to Bedrock: Edition-specific damage, equipment, drops, and behavior are not guaranteed to match. Name the edition and version when testing or documenting a result.
- Treating commands as survival proof: A command-created Vex may not follow every rule of an Evoker-summoned one. Separate the creation method in your tests.
Why Vexes are designed to make you move
Minecraft designer Jens Bergensten explained the design intent in a 2016 interview with Time: “I wanted to try something different.” He described the goal as making players move instead of standing still and waiting for monsters to approach, rather than relying only on more enemy health or attack damage to increase difficulty.
That explains why the most effective Vex response is positional. A wall does not solve the problem because the mob ignores the wall; a static firing position does not solve it because attacks can arrive from unexpected angles. Open sightlines, constant repositioning, and a deliberate decision to disengage are not optional flourishes—they are the counterplay built into the encounter.

Java and Bedrock: what to verify before publishing a precise stat
If you are writing a farm guide, making a tutorial video, or debugging a command map, document all of the following:
- Edition: Java or Bedrock.
- Exact game version and patch.
- Difficulty setting.
- Whether the Vex came from an Evoker, a command, or a spawn egg.
- Whether you are measuring attack damage, health, lifespan, equipment, or drops.
The broad survival rules are stable enough for ordinary play: Evokers create three Vexes, Vexes can pass through blocks, and summoned Vexes are temporary. Exact Java-versus-Bedrock values should be checked against the release you are describing, especially for attack damage, sword equipment, drops, idle behavior, and the treatment of non-Evoker-created Vexes.
Quick decision guide during a fight
| Situation | Best immediate choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Evoker visible and you have a clear shot | Attack the Evoker first | Removing the summoner prevents additional Vex waves. |
| One Vex reaches melee range | Raise the shield, then counterattack | The shield buys a moment against a small, hard-to-track target. |
| Vexes are behind walls or floors | Leave the barrier and seek open sightlines | Blocks do not reliably contain them. |
| Several Vexes surround you | Retreat into open space | Distance reduces cross-angle attacks and gives you room to aim. |
| Evoker dead, Vexes remain | Finish only if safe; otherwise disengage | Summoned Vexes are temporary and are reported to expire in about two minutes. |
| Health is already low | Break contact and recover | A cited Hard-difficulty attack can be up to 13 HP (6.5 hearts). |
Practical answer to the most common questions
How many Vexes does an Evoker summon?
One Vex-summoning spell creates three Vexes.
Can Vexes fly through walls?
Yes. They can pass through blocks, so walls and floors are not reliable protection.
Do Vexes despawn?
Summoned Vexes are temporary and are described by survival guides as dying or despawning within about two minutes.
Do Vexes drop anything?
The woodland-mansion guide says killed Vexes drop nothing. An edition-specific reference notes a possible iron-sword drop in Bedrock, so do not generalize one edition’s equipment behavior to every release.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I kill the Vexes or run?
Kill the Evoker first whenever possible. If the Evoker is dead and the swarm is overwhelming, retreating is sensible because the Vexes are temporary and provide no normal mansion loot.
