Use a normal torch for cheap everyday lighting: place coal or charcoal above a stick in the crafting grid. A normal torch emits light level 14. Soul torches use coal or charcoal, a stick, and soul sand or soul soil; they emit light level 10 and repel piglins. Redstone torches are primarily signal components, not room lights. The right spacing depends on your goal: about 26 blocks can conserve torches along a straight mine, while roughly 14 blocks is a safer practical interval for spawn-proofing and uneven areas.

Which Minecraft torch should you use?

Choose by job rather than appearance. Normal torches provide the brightest inexpensive general lighting. Soul torches give a dimmer cyan flame and a Nether-specific defensive effect. Redstone torches provide a small light source but are designed to switch, invert, and transmit redstone signals.

Torch Light output Recipe materials Special behavior Best use
Normal torch Light level 14 Coal or charcoal plus a stick Reliable general illumination Caves, bases, paths, mines, and marking explored routes
Soul torch Light level 10 Coal or charcoal, a stick, and soul sand or soul soil Blue flame; repels piglins Nether corridors, themed builds, and piglin-deterrent lighting
Redstone torch Small red point light; use its signal function as the deciding factor Use the recipe book for your edition’s exact layout Powers adjacent redstone devices and can be switched off through its attachment block Inverters, compact logic, lamps, doors, and mechanisms

Light levels describe the game’s lighting value, not how bright a color looks on your monitor. Bedrock’s Vibrant Visuals documentation lists warm cream for a normal torch, red for a redstone torch, and cyan for a soul torch as point-light defaults. Those visual defaults do not change the underlying gameplay light levels.

How to craft a normal torch

Materials

  • One stick.
  • One piece of coal or charcoal.

Crafting steps

  1. Open your personal crafting grid or a crafting table.
  2. Place the coal or charcoal in the grid above the stick.
  3. Take the resulting normal torches and move them to your inventory.

The normal torch is the early-game workhorse because charcoal can substitute for coal. Before a long cave trip, prepare extra sticks and fuel rather than assuming you will find coal exactly when you need it. Carrying a reserve lets you mark branches, return paths, and unsafe drops without dismantling your route.

Using ordinary torches effectively

  • Put torches on one consistent side of a tunnel so you can identify the way back. For example, keep them on your right while going inward; torches on your left then indicate the return direction.
  • Use a torch at every fork, vertical shaft, and change of level even when the main passage is already lit.
  • Place lights where they remain visible from the previous marker. A perfectly lit corridor is less useful if you cannot tell which branch you already explored.
  • Keep a separate stack for construction sites. Mining through your building supply is a common way to run out underground.

How to craft and use soul torches

Recipe

Combine coal or charcoal, a stick, and soul sand or soul soil. The soul-sand or soul-soil ingredient gives the torch its Nether-themed identity; coal and charcoal are interchangeable for the fuel part of the recipe.

What makes a soul torch different?

A soul torch emits light level 10, four levels below a normal torch. Its blue flame is useful when you want visual contrast or a distinctly Nether-like route, but it leaves darker working areas than normal torches. Soul torches also repel piglins, so they can discourage piglin approaches in corridors and entrances where that behavior matters.

Because the light is weaker, use soul torches as a deliberate design and safety choice rather than a one-for-one replacement for every normal torch. In a broad room, around a portal, or near a work area, add brighter lighting when you need to see clearly. In a narrow passage, the lower output may be acceptable if the color and piglin deterrence are the priorities.

Practical Nether placement

  • Use soul torches to mark the route from a portal through a dangerous tunnel. Their cyan color makes the path distinguishable from ordinary overworld lighting.
  • Place them near entrances and intersections where piglins might approach, then supplement with brighter lights around storage, smelting, or building areas.
  • Do not treat a soul torch as a complete spawn-control solution. Its light is lower, and mob behavior depends on the specific creature and location.

Redstone torches: lighting is secondary to logic

What a redstone torch does

A redstone torch is a powered signal source and inverter. Microsoft’s Bedrock redstone guide explains that you can power most redstone devices, including a redstone lamp, by putting a redstone torch on an adjacent block. Putting the torch on the lamp itself will not power it. The attachment block and the neighboring component therefore matter as much as the torch.

Use the in-game recipe book for the exact redstone-torch recipe and layout in your edition. Once crafted, treat the item as a circuit component: its useful output is the redstone signal, while its red glow is only a minor side effect.

Basic placement pattern

  1. Place a solid attachment block where the circuit needs the inverter or power source.
  2. Attach the redstone torch to the block’s side, top, or bottom as the design requires.
  3. Run redstone dust or connect the target device from an adjacent position that can receive the signal.
  4. To deactivate the torch, power the block it is attached to. Test the circuit after each change, because powering the attachment block reverses the torch state.

Common redstone mistakes

  • Putting the torch directly on a lamp: that does not power the lamp according to Microsoft’s guide. Move the torch to an adjacent block.
  • Using it as the only room lighting: the red glow is not an efficient replacement for a network of normal torches.
  • Forgetting the attachment block: a redstone torch’s state depends on whether that block is powered. Check the block before replacing components.
  • Ignoring signal direction: test the neighboring device from the exact face and block position where the signal enters.

How torch light falls off

The gameplay-tips reference records a normal torch at light level 14 and says light drops by one per block. That falloff is why a torch that looks bright beside you can leave dark pockets several blocks away, especially around corners, ceilings, stairs, and irregular walls.

Think in three dimensions. Distance along the floor is only one part of the problem; a torch may be close horizontally but still leave a shadow behind a pillar or under a ledge. When checking an area, walk the perimeter, look behind furniture and storage, inspect stairwells, and check ceiling transitions.

Spacing torches for different jobs

Resource-saving mine spacing: about 26 blocks

The gameplay-tips tutorial gives a pattern of placing normal torches every 26 blocks along a floor to keep light from reaching zero in a straight run. This is a resource-saving pattern for a simple, straight tunnel. It is not a guarantee that every side passage, ceiling, alcove, or vertical opening remains safe.

  1. Measure approximately 26 blocks along the main floor route.
  2. Place a torch at the starting point and at the next interval.
  3. Add extra torches at bends, intersections, drops, stairs, and places where the tunnel widens.
  4. Light every branch separately; do not assume the main tunnel illuminates it.

Spawn-proofing spacing: about 14 blocks

The spawn-proofing tutorial gives roughly 14 blocks as an efficient distance to the next torch when your goal is to avoid zero-light gaps. Use this closer interval in rooms, mines with uneven walls, and areas where hostile low-light spawns would be costly.

Fourteen blocks is a planning guide, not a promise that every location is safe. Tighten the interval around intersections, entrances, rough terrain, and any place where a block, slab, overhang, or wall interrupts the light path. Walk through the finished space and inspect the darkest-looking positions rather than relying only on a ruler.

Room and base lighting

  • Start with corners, because they are the first places a sparse layout leaves dark.
  • Light behind large decorations, under staircases, and beneath ceiling changes.
  • Use a symmetric pattern in a rectangular room, then add local lights where furniture or walls interrupt the pattern.
  • Keep entrances and connecting corridors brighter than decorative side rooms so threats are easier to spot as you arrive.

Do torches stop mobs from spawning?

Torches can prevent spawning for hostile mobs whose spawning is restricted by low light, but they do not solve every spawning problem. The spawn-proofing guide specifically lists slimes, magma cubes, and hoglins as examples whose spawning does not rely on low light in the same way. A brightly lit area can therefore still contain one of those creatures when its other spawning conditions are met.

A reliable spawn-check routine

  1. Identify the creature you are trying to exclude. Do not assume the rule for one hostile mob applies to all others.
  2. Light the floor and inspect adjacent ledges, roofs, tunnels, and cavities where a mob could appear outside your immediate view.
  3. Use about 14-block torch spacing as a starting point for low-light spawn control, then tighten it where geometry creates shadows.
  4. For slimes, magma cubes, hoglins, or other exceptions, address their relevant location and spawning conditions in addition to lighting.
  5. Recheck after construction changes. A new wall, bridge, or overhang can create a dark pocket that did not exist during the first pass.

Choosing torch placement in caves and mines

Marking explored territory

Lighting is also navigation. Place markers at branch points, dead ends, and the tops and bottoms of vertical shafts. A consistent side convention prevents confusion when several tunnels look alike. At a major junction, use a small cluster or an unusual arrangement rather than a single torch that could be mistaken for an ordinary interval marker.

Handling vertical spaces

Horizontal spacing does not illuminate a tall ravine, staircase, or shaft evenly. Put lights at landings and on the walls near changes in elevation. Look upward for ledges and downward for shelves; a torch at the bottom cannot reliably cover a dark upper lip.

Protecting the return route

Keep a reserve stack on your hotbar or in a nearby chest. If a branch becomes more complex than expected, stopping to recover supplies is safer than pushing forward in darkness or removing markers behind you.

Edition and visual notes

Recipe presentation and interface labels can differ between Java, Bedrock, and educational editions, so use the recipe book when an ingredient arrangement is not obvious. The Minecraft Education educator guide includes a lesson titled “HOW DO I LIGHT UP A ROOM?” and demonstrates the torch recipe in the crafting interface.

Bedrock’s Vibrant Visuals documentation identifies the default point-light colors as warm cream for minecraft:torch, red for minecraft:redstone_torch, and cyan for minecraft:soul_torch. These are rendering defaults for that visual system. They should not be read as a universal change to gameplay light levels: normal torches remain the documented light-level-14 option, while soul torches remain light level 10.

Quick decision guide

Your goal Recommended choice Placement approach
Bright, inexpensive everyday lighting Normal torch Use about 26 blocks only on simple straight mine runs; use closer spacing in rooms and irregular terrain
Blue Nether aesthetic or piglin deterrence Soul torch Use along Nether routes, then add brighter lighting where the light level 10 output is insufficient
Switching a lamp, door, or mechanism Redstone torch Attach it to a block adjacent to the target and power the attachment block to change its state
Preventing low-light hostile spawns Normal torches in a close network Plan around 14-block intervals and inspect shadows; handle slime, magma-cube, and hoglin cases separately

Troubleshooting checklist

  • A tunnel still looks dark: check distance from the nearest torch, then inspect corners, ledges, and ceiling transitions. Add a light where geometry blocks the falloff.
  • Mobs appear in a lit base: identify the mob first. Lighting affects low-light spawns, but it is not a universal prevention method.
  • A redstone lamp stays off: move the redstone torch to an adjacent block; placing it on the lamp itself does not power it.
  • A redstone circuit behaves backward: inspect whether the attachment block is powered. Powering that block can deactivate the torch.
  • A Nether corridor is hard to work in: soul torches provide light level 10, so add normal torches or another brighter arrangement where visibility matters more than the blue-flame theme.
  • You cannot find your way back: adopt a one-side marking convention and add distinctive markers at junctions instead of spacing torches uniformly everywhere.

Bottom line

Craft normal torches first and use them for most survival lighting. Reserve soul torches for Nether styling and piglin deterrence, remembering their lower light level. Use redstone torches when you need a circuit signal, not when you simply need a bright room. For placement, about 26 blocks is a straight-tunnel conservation pattern, while roughly 14 blocks is the more practical starting point for spawn-proofing; in both cases, corners, branches, vertical spaces, and mob-specific rules require additional attention.
