Minecraft Stick ID: Java and Bedrock Commands Explained

The stick identifier is minecraft:stick. Learn how to use it in Java and Bedrock and why Java item-data command syntax changed in 1.20.5.

The stick item identifier is minecraft:stick in both Java and Bedrock reference materials. For Bedrock, Microsoft’s item enum also lists the shorter form stick. Command syntax is edition-specific, and Java item-data syntax changed in version 1.20.5, so use the example that matches your edition and version.

What is the stick ID in Minecraft?

Use minecraft:stick as the namespaced item identifier. It names the item itself; it is not a numeric ID. Microsoft’s Bedrock Item enum lists both minecraft:stick and stick for Stick. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.5 notes also use minecraft:stick as an example item type.

How to use the stick ID in a command

Java Edition

In Java Edition, a basic give command uses the namespaced identifier:

/give @s minecraft:stick

This example gives the item without specifying extra stack data. Java commands and item references are documented separately from Bedrock’s item enum; do not assume a command example for one edition works unchanged in the other.

Bedrock Edition

Microsoft’s Bedrock item enum lists minecraft:stick and stick as identifier forms. Use the namespaced form when you want an unambiguous item name. The enum is a reference for item commands including clear, give, and replaceitem; consult Microsoft’s Bedrock item documentation for the command’s edition-specific syntax.

Why Java stick commands with item data may need updating

Java Edition 1.20.5 changed how properties attached to an item stack are represented. Mojang says it replaced the older NBT tag field with structured components, and updated item syntax in commands such as /give. The base identifier remains the item name, while components describe additional properties on a particular stack.

As a result, older Java examples that attach item data using the former NBT-style syntax should not be copied into Java 1.20.5 or later unchanged. The version-specific changes are detailed in Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes. A technical overview of the syntax change is also available from MinecraftCommands.

Where to check Bedrock item references

For Bedrock-specific identifiers and item definitions, use Microsoft’s item enum and Item JSON documentation. Microsoft’s Default Minecraft Item Listings describes available Bedrock items; its page reports an update date of August 25, 2026. These references do not make Bedrock and Java command syntax interchangeable.
