What soul sand does
Soul sand is a Nether block that changes movement and entity behavior. Players and mobs move more slowly across it, and entities sink slightly into its surface. That slowdown is useful for controlling paths, delaying hostile mobs, or creating a hazard, but it also makes escapes harder. Mojang specifically warns that standing on soul sand near lava can set the player on fire, so treat exposed soul-sand floors beside lava as a real hazard rather than harmless decoration.
The block is valuable because several unrelated systems use it as a condition. Nether wart checks for soul sand as its growing base. A column of water above soul sand can become an upward bubble column. Four soul-sand blocks are part of the Wither-summoning pattern. Soul Speed also recognizes soul sand, although the enchantment works on soul soil as well.

How to grow Nether wart on soul sand
Nether wart is a brewing ingredient, and soul sand is the required base for growing it. The block does not need to be in the Nether for the crop to grow; once you have soul sand and Nether wart, you can establish a farm wherever your game rules and available space allow. The essential pairing is always Nether wart planted directly on soul sand.
Basic farm setup
- Place a row, patch, or larger field of soul sand.
- Plant Nether wart on the top face of each soul-sand block.
- Leave enough room to walk between rows and harvest safely.
- Wait for the plants to mature, then harvest and replant so the farm continues producing.
Keep soul sand under every planted block. Replacing it with ordinary dirt, farmland, or soul soil removes the condition Nether wart needs. A compact farm can be a single row; a larger one is mainly an organization problem, so choose row spacing that lets you reach every plant without stepping into hazards.
Why the farm matters for brewing
Nether wart is a key ingredient in potion brewing. A reliable soul-sand plot therefore turns a one-time Nether-wart find into a renewable supply for a brewing operation. Build the farm near your brewing area if convenience matters, but do not sacrifice safety by placing it beside an exposed lava edge or an unlit route used by hostile mobs.

Nether-wart troubleshooting
- The plant will not stay planted: check that the block directly beneath it is soul sand, not soul soil or another Nether block.
- The farm seems to have stopped: inspect each row for missing plants and make sure you are allowing normal game growth time rather than expecting an instant harvest.
- Harvesting is dangerous: widen the walkways, add lighting where appropriate, and keep soul-sand paths away from lava so the slowdown does not trap you at the edge.
How to make an upward soul-sand bubble elevator
A soul-sand bubble column is a vertical transport shaft. When soul sand sits beneath a continuous column of water source blocks, bubbles travel upward through the water. Players, mobs, and dropped items can rise in the column, and a player inside can restore breath while submerged.
Build procedure
- Choose a vertical shaft with the height and landing points you need. Enclose the sides so the water cannot spill out.
- Place one soul-sand block at the bottom of the shaft.
- Fill every water block above it with a water source. The column must be continuous from the soul sand to the top opening or destination.
- Enter the water column and confirm that bubbles carry you upward. Add a safe platform or opening at the top and a controlled entrance at the bottom.
- Test the route with an item before sending a mob or using it as your main travel path. A dropped item should rise if the column is functioning.
The critical distinction is between source water and flowing water. A column that looks full can still fail if one or more blocks contain only a flow. Any gap, air pocket, or incorrectly filled level interrupts the upward movement. Build the shaft in a way that lets you inspect each level when troubleshooting.
Practical elevator layouts
For a player elevator, put the entrance where you can step into the water without falling past the soul sand. At the top, provide a short exit ledge so you are not pushed back into the shaft. If the elevator carries items, place the collection point directly above the column and prevent items from landing on a nearby ledge.

Mobs can also be lifted, but their size and pathing make the entrance and exit more important than the bubble mechanic itself. Use walls and gates to guide them into the shaft, then verify that the destination does not let them wander back into the column or into a hazard.
Bubble-column failure points
- No bubbles appear: the bottom block may not be soul sand, or the water above it is not a fully continuous source column.
- The column rises partway: inspect the first level where bubbles stop. That is usually where a water source is missing or an air pocket has formed.
- You are pushed out: add a roof, side walls, or a controlled exit so the column does not spill you onto an unsafe ledge.
- Items do not arrive: check for side ledges and water flow outside the shaft; an item can leave the column before reaching the top even when the bubbles are working.
How Soul Speed works on soul sand
Soul Speed is an enchantment for boots. It increases walking speed on soul sand and soul soil, with a maximum level of III. The enchantment is obtained through piglin bartering rather than by treating soul sand as a normal crafting ingredient.
Using Soul Speed effectively
- Obtain Soul Speed boots or a Soul Speed book through piglin bartering.
- Equip the enchanted boots before crossing a soul-sand or soul-soil route.
- Use the faster route for long soul-block paths, especially in areas where ordinary movement would leave you exposed to hostile mobs.
- Inspect the boots regularly. Mojang notes that durability degrades as the wearer walks across soul blocks, so carry a replacement or a repair plan for important journeys.
Soul Speed does not remove the environmental danger around the block. A faster crossing can reduce the time spent in a hazardous area, but it does not make lava safe, remove hostile mobs, or prevent a fall. Plan the route first, then use the enchantment to improve travel on that route.

Soul sand versus soul soil
Soul soil looks related to soul sand and supports some of the same mechanics, but it is not an interchangeable block. The differences matter when designing farms, elevators, and travel routes.

Use the block that matches the mechanism you need. Choose soul sand for Nether-wart plots and upward elevators; choose soul soil when you need Soul Speed-compatible terrain or soul fire without those two soul-sand functions.
How to summon the Wither with soul sand
The Wither is summoned by arranging four soul-sand blocks and three wither skeleton skulls in a T shape in the world. This is not a crafting-table recipe: the structure must be assembled in the game environment.
Assembly steps
- Clear a location with enough room for the structure and the fight that follows. Avoid building it beside a base, a lava pool, or anything you cannot afford to lose.
- Place three soul-sand blocks in a horizontal row.
- Place the fourth soul-sand block beneath the center block, forming the vertical stem of the T.
- Place one wither skeleton skull on each of the three upper soul-sand blocks.
- Move to a safe position before placing the final required component and activating the structure. The Wither fight begins in the world, not at a crafting interface.
Because soul sand slows movement, do not design your escape route as a narrow soul-sand corridor. Keep solid ground, cover, and a clear retreat path nearby. If the summoning area is near lava, the block’s fire risk adds another reason to relocate the build.

The slowdown and slight sinking effect are enough to make soul sand useful for movement-control systems. A soul-sand strip can delay a player or mob crossing a doorway, extend the time a target remains in a detection area, or make a route feel hazardous without relying on a redstone trigger.
Design principles
- Place soul sand where delay is useful, not where you need a quick emergency exit.
- Use walls, fences, or other barriers to keep targets on the surface long enough for the slowdown to matter.
- Keep the block away from lava unless the fire risk is intentional and fully controlled.
- Test the route as both a player and a mob. The practical effect depends on whether the entity can step around the patch or escape through a side opening.
A trap based only on a small patch is easy to bypass. A longer, enclosed section creates more delay, but it also creates more risk for the builder. Build a safe maintenance path so you can replace blocks or retrieve drops without walking into the trap yourself.
Version and edition notes
The mechanics described by the cited Mojang material come from the Nether Update-era behavior and include the help documentation’s maximum Soul Speed level of III. Java and Bedrock can differ in edge cases, including how particular entities interact with blocks or water. Before publishing a technical build for a server, check the exact Java or Bedrock release running there and test the elevator, farm, or trap in that version.
For the core decisions, the rule is stable: soul sand is the Nether-wart base and the upward-bubble-column block; soul soil is not a substitute for either function; both support Soul Speed; and Soul Speed can wear down boots while crossing soul blocks.
