When a Minecraft server stops working after an update, first identify the edition and exact versions, then confirm that the server process starts before changing firewall or router settings. An “Outdated Client” or “Outdated Server” message indicates a protocol mismatch; a server that never reaches a running state has a process, Java runtime, world, or configuration problem instead. Work through the checks below in that order, and back up the world before replacing files.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Start with the failure stage
The symptom tells you where to begin. Separate a startup failure from a connection failure so you do not spend time forwarding ports for a server that is not running.

Minecraft Help identifies outdated versions as a common multiplayer cause and recommends the latest stable release rather than a preview or snapshot. Microsoft explains that the outdated-client and outdated-server messages mean the protocol versions differ; even patch-level differences can prevent a connection.
1. Confirm edition, release, and build
Java Edition and Bedrock Dedicated Server are different software
Java Edition server software cannot be substituted for Bedrock Dedicated Server software. Confirm which edition your players use and which dedicated-server package you installed. A Java client must connect to a compatible Java server release; Bedrock clients require a compatible Bedrock Dedicated Server release. Do not use an edition label alone as proof of compatibility—record the complete version shown by the client and server.

Check stable versus preview or snapshot
After an update, it is easy for one person to select a preview, beta, or snapshot while the server remains on a stable release. Move both sides to the same stable release unless you intentionally operate a test server. If the update changed only a patch number, still treat it as a possible protocol mismatch.
Use the exact error wording
- “Outdated Client”: update the connecting game client to the server’s protocol version.
- “Outdated Server”: update the server, or temporarily run a client that matches the server while you prepare the upgrade.
- No version message and no connection: continue with the process and local-connection checks; networking may not be involved.
Write down the version displayed by every affected client, the server package version, and whether the package is stable, preview, or snapshot. This prevents repeatedly replacing the correct files with a different build.

2. Back up the world and keep a rollback copy
Stop the server cleanly before copying files. A live copy can miss region data or configuration changes. Save the world directory, server.properties, allowlists or operator files, and any launch scripts or custom configuration in a separate backup location. Keep the complete previous server directory until the new release has loaded the world and accepted a test connection.
- Tell players to leave and issue the server’s normal stop command, or use the documented stop procedure for your package.
- Wait until the process exits and the terminal returns to the operating-system prompt.
- Copy the world and configuration to storage that is not inside the replacement directory.
- Label the backup with the edition, exact release, and date.
- Keep the previous server directory unchanged so you can restore it if the new build cannot load the world.
Microsoft’s Bedrock guidance describes separate directories for multiple versions. That arrangement is useful for rollback: each release has its own binaries while the backed-up world can be restored to the version that last worked. Never test an unverified build on the only copy of a world.
3. Make sure the server process actually starts
Launch from the server’s own directory
Open a terminal in the directory containing the server files and keep it open while testing. Starting from another directory can cause missing-file, permission, or world-path errors that look like an update problem. Read the first error after a clean launch; later messages are often consequences of that initial failure.
Bedrock Dedicated Server commands
On Windows, Microsoft documents launching the executable named bedrock_server. On Ubuntu, the documented command is:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ./bedrock_server
Use the command appropriate to your operating system and package. If the terminal immediately exits, copy the complete error before trying another change. A running process should remain visible in the terminal and continue to report its listening state or normal activity.
Java Edition launch checks
Use the launch script or command supplied for your Java server release, and verify that it points to the new server file and the intended working directory. If you changed Java installations, print the selected runtime’s version before launching. A script can silently select a different Java executable from the one used by your interactive shell, so check the path configured in the script, service, panel, or scheduled task as well as the result of the version command.
Classify the startup error
- Missing Java or wrong class version: inspect the Java version and the runtime path.
- Missing library or native-file error: verify that the release archive was fully extracted and that required files remain beside the executable.
- Permission denied: run under an account that can read the server directory and write world, log, and configuration files; correct ownership or permissions rather than running the entire system with unnecessary privileges.
- World-load or conversion error: stop, preserve the backup, and test the world with the previous release before attempting another conversion.
- Port already in use: identify the other process using the configured port, stop it, or deliberately choose a different port and update every firewall and forwarding rule.
4. Use the required Java runtime for Java Edition
Minecraft Java Edition 1.18 requires Java 17. A custom Java path, third-party launcher, service definition, or hosting panel must select Java 17 or newer for that server software. Installing Java is not enough if the server still points to an older executable.
- Run the version command for the exact executable selected by the server launch configuration, such as
java -versionwhen that command resolves to the intended installation. - Confirm that the output reports Java 17 or a newer compatible release.
- Check the launcher, script, service file, or panel for an explicit Java path that overrides your shell’s default.
- Restart the server and read the startup output again; a successful runtime check does not by itself prove that the server used that runtime.
Do not “fix” a Java-version error by deleting the world or changing network settings. Runtime compatibility must be established before diagnosing connections.
5. Review server.properties after the update
Open the new release’s configuration and compare it with your saved copy line by line. Java release documentation specifies that server.properties is read and written as UTF-8. Preserve the file’s encoding and avoid copying an old file wholesale when the new release may have added, removed, or renamed settings.
Values to verify
- Port: record the actual configured value; do not assume a default if you changed it.
- Level or world name: make sure it points to the backed-up world directory you intend to load.
- Authentication and gameplay settings: confirm that the update did not reset access, online-authentication, or gameplay options needed by your group.
- Address or bind settings: leave documented defaults in place unless you have a specific, tested reason to bind to one interface.
- New or renamed keys: start from the new file’s key set and reapply only the values you understand from the old file.
Save the file, start the server, and inspect the startup log for the port and world it actually selected. A typo in a world name or a setting regenerated with a default value can make an update appear to have destroyed a server when it simply selected different data.

6. Test from the host before touching the router
With the process running, connect from the same computer using localhost or from another device using the host’s current LAN address. A local failure means the problem remains in the process, Java runtime, world, configuration, or host firewall. Do not proceed to router forwarding until the host can connect successfully.
If localhost fails
- Return to the terminal and look for the first startup or bind error.
- Confirm that the client edition and exact protocol release match the server.
- Check the configured port and whether another process already occupies it.
- Verify that the world finished loading rather than leaving the process in an error state.
If localhost works but the LAN address fails
- Find the host’s current private IPv4 address; updates, reboots, or DHCP leases can change it.
- Allow the server executable and configured port through the operating system firewall on the host’s active network profile.
- Check that the server is not bound only to loopback or an obsolete interface.
- Try from a second device on the same LAN to distinguish a client-specific issue from a host-network issue.
7. Open the firewall port that the server is really using
For Bedrock Dedicated Server, Microsoft documents default ports 19132 and 19133. The firewall must allow the ports configured in server.properties; use your actual values if they differ from those defaults. If you changed the port during troubleshooting, update the firewall rule to match rather than opening every port.
- Read the configured Bedrock port or ports from
server.properties. - Create an inbound firewall rule for those protocols and ports on the network profile used by the host.
- Allow the server executable if your operating system firewall also filters applications.
- Restart the server and confirm in its log that it is listening on the same port you opened.
- Test from a device on the LAN before testing from the internet.
For Java servers, use the port shown in the server configuration rather than assuming the port used by another edition. Keep firewall changes narrow and documented so you can remove obsolete rules after the update.
8. Repair remote access with router forwarding
Only begin this section after a local or LAN connection works. Port forwarding cannot make a stopped process reachable.
- Assign the host a stable LAN address, either with a DHCP reservation on the router or a correctly configured static address.
- Forward the server’s configured port from the router to that exact LAN address. The external and internal port must match unless you intentionally use a different external port.
- Confirm that the host firewall allows the same port.
- Check the router’s forwarding table after a reboot; a changed private address can silently point the rule at another device.
- Give remote players the current public address and port, not the private 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or 172.16–31.x.x address used inside the home network.
- Test from a genuinely external network, such as a phone connection with Wi-Fi disabled. Some routers do not support loopback testing from inside the same LAN.
Leave the server’s bind or address setting at its documented default unless you have a specific reason to change it. An unnecessary bind value can make the server listen only on the wrong interface.
When forwarding still does not work
- Recheck the public address; residential addresses can change after a modem reboot.
- Verify that the forwarding rule targets the host’s current LAN address.
- Confirm that the server is listening and that the operating-system firewall rule applies to the active network profile.
- Determine whether the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT or another upstream router that you do not control; in that case, a home router rule alone may not expose the server.
- Ask the internet provider whether inbound connections are filtered before changing server files.
9. Match the fix to the exact error
“Outdated Client” or “Outdated Server”
Microsoft’s wording is precise: the message means the client and server protocol versions do not match. Update the side named in the error, then verify the other side is on the same compatible release. Remove preview or snapshot builds from the equation while testing.

Java stack trace or class-version error
Capture the first exception after a clean restart. Check the selected Java executable and use Java 17 or newer for Java Edition 1.18-era software. Do not repeatedly reinstall server files until the runtime path is confirmed.
Missing file or library
Compare the extracted directory with the release archive. A partially uploaded archive, nested extraction folder, or antivirus quarantine can leave the executable present while a required library is missing. Re-extract into a new versioned directory and test there, preserving the old directory and world backup.
Permission or access denied
Ensure the account running the server can read binaries and write logs, configuration, and world data. Correct directory ownership and permissions, then restart under the same account you intend to use in normal operation.
World will not load after the update
Stop immediately and retain the untouched backup. Test the world with the previous server directory. If the previous release loads it, the issue is specific to the new build or a conversion step; do not overwrite the only working copy while experimenting.
10. Roll back safely when the update is the cause
Rollback is a controlled comparison, not a replacement for a backup. Keep the new directory intact for later diagnosis and use a separate directory for the known-good release.
- Stop the failed server cleanly.
- Rename or move the new directory so its logs and files remain available.
- Restore the previous server binaries and configuration to their own directory.
- Restore a copy of the world made before the failed update; never experiment on the only copy.
- Start the previous release and test locally, on the LAN, and remotely in that order.
- Record which stage succeeds and preserve the failed release’s first error for later investigation.
A rollback proves that the update correlates with the failure, but it does not prove that every world or plugin is incompatible. Once the stable server is available, review the new release’s requirements and reattempt the upgrade on a disposable copy.
11. Decide whether self-hosting remains practical
Self-hosting gives you direct control, but every update requires you to maintain server binaries, an operating-system runtime, world backups, firewall rules, and router forwarding. It is a good fit when you can keep those responsibilities documented and have access to the host and network.

Quick Recap
A repeatable post-update checklist
- Identify Java or Bedrock and record the exact client and server releases.
- Choose a stable release rather than a preview or snapshot while diagnosing.
- Stop the server cleanly and back up the world, configuration, and previous server directory.
- Launch from the server directory and keep the terminal open.
- For Java Edition 1.18-era software, verify the selected runtime is Java 17 or newer.
- Read the first startup error before changing networking.
- Review the new
server.propertiesand preserve UTF-8 encoding. - Confirm the configured world and port.
- Connect on the host, then from the LAN, then from an external network.
- Allow only the configured port through the host firewall; Bedrock’s documented defaults are 19132 and 19133.
- Forward that same port to the host’s current LAN address.
- If the update still fails, restore the versioned directory and pre-update world backup.
