When a Minecraft server appears to stop loading chunks, the missing terrain can originate in four different places: the server may not have generated or read the chunk, it may have loaded the chunk but not sent it, the network may delay or drop the packets, or the client may have received the data but be rendering it slowly. Treating all four symptoms as a view-distance problem leads to wasted configuration changes.

The reliable approach is to identify which layer fails, verify the effective distance settings, inspect logs, isolate plugins, check world-version compatibility, measure performance, and only then change chunk limits or add pregeneration.

A chunk can be missing from your screen even though the server is functioning normally. The phrase describes several distinct states:
| What you see | Likely layer | Useful test |
|---|---|---|
| Terrain is absent only at the edge of the visible area | Client render distance or server send distance | Compare the client’s render-distance setting with the server’s effective view distance |
| Terrain appears after you walk forward, relog, or teleport | Chunk sending, generation, loading limits, or a version-specific bug | Watch the console while reproducing the delay and compare with another player |
| Every player sees the same stalls or holes | Server CPU, disk, generation, plugin, or world-version problem | Check logs/latest.log, tick performance, and the server profile |
| Only one player sees invisible or delayed terrain | Client rendering, client network path, graphics load, or that player’s connection | Test the same account from another client or have a second player view the area |
| The console reports chunk, watchdog, plugin, or version errors | Server-side configuration or compatibility | Resolve the logged error before increasing distances |
This distinction matters because pregenerating terrain cannot repair a plugin exception, a client render-distance cap, or packets delayed by a saturated connection.

Check view distance and simulation distance first
Paper’s server-properties reference defines view-distance as the amount of world data sent to a client, measured in chunks in each direction from the player. It is a radius, not a diameter. The documented Paper default is 10 chunks, with an allowed range of 3 to 32. A setting of 10 therefore describes a 10-chunk radius around the player rather than a 10-chunk-wide circle.
simulation-distance is a separate radius. It controls how far from players living entities are updated. Paper documents a range of 3 through 32 inclusive; entities outside that radius are not ticked by the server and are not visible to players. It does not directly determine how much terrain data is sent.
Record the effective values
- Stop or safely pause the server according to your hosting panel’s procedure.
- Open
server.propertiesand recordview-distanceandsimulation-distance. - Check the client’s video or graphics settings. A client render-distance cap can make a high server value appear ineffective.
- If you run Paper, check whether a Paper-specific send-distance or per-player limit is reducing delivery.
- Restart the server after changing properties, then test in a newly explored area rather than relying on terrain already cached by the client.
The server value is a maximum, not a promise that every player will receive that radius immediately. Raising it repeatedly can increase generation work, disk reads, packet volume, and tick pressure without improving the symptom.
Use a conservative baseline while testing
Temporarily lower the server distance to a moderate value, restart, and reproduce the problem. Measure tick time, CPU use, disk activity, and network behavior during the test. If chunks arrive normally at the lower value, increase the setting one step at a time and observe which resource becomes constrained. Do not change view distance and several unrelated optimizations simultaneously; you will lose the evidence showing which change mattered.
Follow a symptom-first diagnostic workflow
1. Reproduce the problem deliberately
Ask whether the missing area is only at the far edge, whether it fills in after moving forward, and whether all players experience it. Note the dimension, location, and whether the area is newly generated or previously explored. Have a second player observe the same location if possible. A client-only symptom should be investigated separately from a server-wide stall.

2. Watch the console and latest log
Paper’s troubleshooting guidance points to logs/latest.log. Keep the console visible while reproducing the delay and look for chunk exceptions, watchdog warnings, plugin stack traces, repeated errors, or messages about incompatible world data. A single relevant stack trace is more useful than a high view-distance number.
Recommended Free Tools
3. Isolate plugins instead of guessing
If a plugin appears in a stack trace, update it and its required libraries from the plugin’s official download source. For a controlled test, stop the server, disable all plugins, restart, and reproduce the issue. If the problem disappears, re-enable plugins in groups and test after each restart. Split the failing group again until one plugin or interaction is identified. Keep a backup of the configuration before changing it.
Paper also recommends reverting copied optimization configurations and testing a vanilla-like configuration when behavior differs from an unmodified server. Settings copied from another version or hardware profile can impose limits that are inappropriate for your world.
4. Check the world and server versions
If the log says Server attempted to load chunk saved with newer version of minecraft, the world was opened by a newer Minecraft server version than the one currently running. Downgrading is unsupported. Use the latest supported Paper version for that world and restore a backup before experiments.
Do not force the load with -DPaper.ignoreWorldDataVersion=true. Paper identifies that option as unsupported and warns that it can permanently corrupt the world. A version error is a compatibility problem, not a reason to raise view distance.

Understand Paper’s chunk-generation and sending limits
Paper exposes separate global controls for how many chunks can be generated, loaded, and sent concurrently or per player. The relevant names are:
player-max-concurrent-chunk-generatesplayer-max-concurrent-chunk-loadsplayer-max-chunk-generate-rateplayer-max-chunk-load-rateplayer-max-chunk-send-rate
These controls can make chunks arrive slowly even when view-distance is high. A low rate deliberately meters work; an unlimited or very high value can instead saturate CPU, storage, or bandwidth and make the whole server less responsive.
Change one limit at a time
- Back up the relevant Paper configuration and record the current values.
- Change only the limit associated with the measured bottleneck—for example, sending if chunks are generated and loaded but reach clients slowly.
- Restart if required by your configuration workflow.
- Reproduce the same route with the same number of players.
- Compare tick time, CPU, disk, network throughput, and the delay before terrain appears.
Do not set every limit to an unlimited value as a shortcut. More concurrent work can turn a local delay into watchdog timeouts or server-wide lag.
Measure before buying hardware
Paper documents the built-in spark profiler for performance investigations. During a controlled reproduction, run /spark profiler start --timeout 300. The five-minute profile can show whether CPU time, plugin tasks, chunk generation, chunk loading, or network sending dominates.
Use the profile together with operating-system or host metrics. A fast CPU will not fix a plugin throwing exceptions, a world-version mismatch, or a client that is not rendering received chunks. Conversely, if profiling shows sustained CPU saturation during generation, or storage latency dominates chunk loads, a faster host, SSD, or stronger CPU may help. The independent optimization guidance notes that CPU overload can significantly slow chunk loading, but hardware should follow a measured bottleneck rather than a guess.

Fixes by failure layer
Client rendering or client-side distance
- Check the client’s render-distance setting and raise it only if the client has enough memory and graphics capacity.
- Test with reduced shaders, entity distance, and graphics effects to distinguish rendering slowdown from missing server data.
- Compare the affected client with a second client on the same server. If only one machine has the issue, focus on its frame rate, memory pressure, mods, and network path.
A client cannot display terrain it has not received, but it can also fail to render terrain that arrived. The distinction is why a second-client comparison is more valuable than immediately changing server properties.
Network delivery
If the server console shows normal chunk work and only one connection experiences gaps, test the route: try a wired connection, another network, or a second client. Avoid increasing send rates while packet loss or bandwidth saturation is suspected; more packets can worsen congestion. Check whether the delay occurs only during peak player counts, when aggregate bandwidth is highest.

If all players see chunks arrive slowly but the server remains otherwise stable, inspect the Paper per-player load, generation, and send controls. A low send rate can create a steady stream of late chunks. A low load or generation rate can produce the same visual effect because the server has nothing ready to send. Raise only the constrained rate and verify that CPU, disk, and network headroom remain available.
Disk and CPU contention
New terrain requires generation; explored terrain still requires chunk data to be read and processed. Slow storage, a busy host, or CPU saturation can delay both operations. Profile during movement into unexplored territory, then repeat in a previously explored region. A delay only in new terrain points toward generation; a delay in both areas suggests loading, sending, plugins, or broader resource contention.
Plugins and copied settings
World-management, teleportation, map, protection, and optimization plugins can alter when chunks load or how players are sent terrain. Stale builds may fail after a Minecraft update. Disable and bisect plugins as described above, then restore only compatible versions. Remove copied tuning values that were designed for a different server version, player count, or storage system.
Best Value
World-version incompatibility
Resolve a newer-world-version message by running a supported server version for that world and restoring a backup if necessary. Do not treat an unsupported bypass flag as a repair. A world that cannot be safely read will not become reliable when view distance is changed.
When pregeneration helps—and when it does not
Pregeneration creates terrain before players explore it, allowing administrators to control the workload instead of making the server generate chunks during live movement. It can make exploration smoother on a new world, especially when profiling shows generation as the bottleneck.
Costs and safeguards
- Large areas can take hours to generate.
- Generation consumes CPU and disk space and can compete with players if run too aggressively.
- Use a workload you can monitor and stop safely.
- Pair the work with a vanilla world border so exploration remains inside the prepared area.
- Each dimension has its own world border; prepare the dimensions players will actually use.
Pregeneration does not fix incompatible worlds, broken plugins, a client render-distance cap, packet loss, or slow chunk sending. It is a targeted generation remedy, not a universal performance switch.
Compare remedies before applying them
| Remedy | Layer addressed | Reversible? | Main cost or risk | Restart or backup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adjust client render distance | Client rendering and visibility | Yes | Higher graphics and memory load | No server restart; client setting applies locally |
| Lower server view distance for testing | Server sending, generation, and bandwidth pressure | Yes | Less gameplay visibility | Restart recommended |
| Change Paper chunk rates | Generation, loading, or sending throughput | Yes, if values are recorded | High values can overload CPU, disk, or network | Follow the configuration’s reload or restart requirement |
| Disable or bisect plugins | Plugin and configuration faults | Yes, with backups | Features may be unavailable during testing | Restart between controlled plugin tests |
| Run spark profiling | Measurement across server layers | Yes; time-limited | Small profiling overhead | No, use during reproduction |
| Upgrade server hardware | Measured CPU or storage bottleneck | Depends on provider | Cost without a proven bottleneck | Usually requires a migration or restart |
| Pregenerate terrain | New-terrain generation | Not practically undone without restoring a backup | Hours of CPU and disk work | Back up first; plan each dimension |
A practical recovery sequence
- Determine whether the symptom affects one client, one area, or every player.
- Record
view-distance,simulation-distance, client render distance, and any Paper send-distance rule. - Reproduce the issue while watching
logs/latest.logand the console. - Resolve plugin stack traces and test with plugins disabled or bisected.
- Resolve any newer-world-version error; do not use the unsupported ignore flag.
- Run a five-minute spark profile during the delay.
- Adjust one Paper chunk-generation, load, or send limit only when the profile and symptoms identify that layer.
- Pregenerate only if new-terrain generation is the measured bottleneck, after making a backup and setting controlled borders.
- Retest with the same route, player count, and dimension so the comparison is meaningful.
Version-specific bugs are possible, but not the default diagnosis
Paper issue #5203 documented a 1.16 API scenario in which raising view distance left some chunks unloaded until a player moved, relogged, or teleported. The issue was closed as completed on April 15, 2021. It demonstrates that implementation bugs can be version-specific; it does not establish a universal current bug or justify assuming every modern server has the same fault. Check your exact server version, plugins, and logs before applying a historical workaround.
Bottom line
Start by separating generation, disk loading, server sending, network delivery, and client rendering. Verify both distance settings, inspect logs, isolate plugins, and confirm world-version compatibility. Use Paper’s chunk limits and spark profiler to connect a change to a measured bottleneck. Pregeneration is valuable for planned new-terrain workloads, but it cannot repair compatibility, plugin, network, or client problems.
