Choose your Minecraft edition before you choose a host. Java players need a Java server, Bedrock players need a Bedrock world, server, or Realm, and everyone should update to the latest client release. From there, pick among self-hosting, Minecraft Realms, and a managed third-party server according to how much administration, control, uptime, and scaling you need.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
This guide explains the compatibility rules, compares the three hosting paths, lists the official Bedrock requirements, and gives complete Java and Bedrock setup sequences for 2026.

Start with edition compatibility
Minecraft Java Edition and Minecraft Bedrock Edition use different server ecosystems. Minecraft Help states that Bedrock players need Bedrock worlds, servers, or Realms, while Java players can join only Java hosted games. A Java client cannot join a normal Bedrock Dedicated Server, and a Bedrock client cannot join a standard Java server. Make sure every player is using the same edition and the latest release before troubleshooting hosting.
What this means for a mixed group
- A group playing Java Edition needs a Java server, Java Realm, or Java-compatible managed host.
- A group playing Bedrock Edition needs a Bedrock world, Bedrock Realm, or Bedrock-compatible host.
- Buying a host that advertises “Minecraft support” is not enough; confirm the exact edition in its plan and control panel.
- If some players own Java and others own Bedrock, treat them as separate player groups unless a service explicitly documents a supported cross-edition solution. The official compatibility guidance does not promise native cross-play between the two editions.
Choose a hosting model
There are three practical ways to run a multiplayer world. Self-hosting gives you the most control and avoids a hosting subscription, but you become responsible for software updates, backups, network configuration, security, and availability. Realms is the official low-maintenance option for a small group. A managed third-party host adds recurring cost in exchange for a control panel, support, deployment tools, and potentially easier scaling.

| Option | Best fit | What you control | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-host at home or on your own server | Operators who understand Java or Bedrock administration and network configuration | Server files, settings, worlds, backups, mods or add-ons, and access rules | You handle maintenance, firewall rules, router changes, hardware reliability, and internet availability |
| Minecraft Realms | A small group wanting the least administration | World choice and in-game settings within the Realm feature set | Fixed features and capacity; less low-level control than a full server |
| Managed third-party host | Groups that need support, stronger uptime options, or room to scale | Server configuration through the provider’s panel, subject to the plan and service terms | Recurring fees and provider limits; migration, backups, and support quality vary |
When self-hosting is sensible
Self-hosting works when you can leave the machine running, protect it, perform updates, and configure your network safely. It is attractive for a private LAN, a technically confident administrator, or a community that needs full access to files and configuration. Minecraft’s own Java guide warns that exposing a home server requires changing your home network and “is not recommended unless you know what you are doing.” That warning matters: a server that works on the same Wi-Fi network may still be unreachable from the internet, and an incorrectly exposed router can create a security problem.
When Realms is the better answer
Realms removes most server administration. Minecraft Help describes automatic backups and up to 10 players at a time in its Java setup guidance. It is a good fit when the priority is inviting a small group and keeping a world available without managing a machine, firewall, or update routine. The fixed feature set is the price of that simplicity: choose another model if you require server-side files, extensive customization, or controls that Realms does not provide.
When to use a managed host
A managed host is the middle path. You still choose the edition and configure the world, but the provider can supply a data-center location, a web panel, automated deployment, backups, support, and plan upgrades. This is usually the practical choice when uptime matters, players are in several locations, or nobody wants to maintain a home network. Compare the actual plan rather than relying on a generic “Minecraft” label.
Evaluate a managed host before paying
Make a checklist and verify each item on the current plan page or in the service agreement. Features differ by provider and can change, so a plan that looks inexpensive may omit a feature your world needs.
- Edition: Confirm Java, Bedrock, or both, and check which server versions can be installed.
- Concurrent players: Look for a stated player limit and whether it is a hard slot cap or only a suggested capacity.
- CPU and RAM: Check the allocated resources, not just a vague “premium hardware” description. Modded worlds, large render distances, many entities, and frequent exploration increase load.
- Storage: Verify the disk allowance and whether world backups count against it.
- Backups: Confirm frequency, retention, restore steps, and whether you can download a backup independently.
- Region and latency: Select a data center close to most players. A powerful server cannot eliminate the delay caused by a distant region.
- Control panel: Look for version selection, console access, file management, scheduled tasks, restart controls, and permission management.
- Migration access: Confirm that you can download the complete world and configuration files if you leave.
- Support: Check support hours, response commitments, and whether staff help with server errors or only billing.
- Uptime terms: Read the actual commitment and exclusions; maintenance windows and upstream outages may be excluded.
- Security: Look for account protection, automated updates where appropriate, firewall controls, and clear policies for abuse reports.
- Total cost: Include setup fees, extra storage, additional backups, higher player limits, taxes, renewal pricing, and cancellation terms.
Do not choose RAM from a universal chart. The required amount depends on edition, world size, view distance, simulation distance, player count, mods or plugins, add-ons, and how much exploration happens at once. The official Bedrock Dedicated Server page does provide a baseline requirement, covered below, but that minimum is not a promise of capacity for a busy community.

Java Edition: official self-hosting setup
A Java server requires a compatible Java runtime, the official server JAR, EULA acceptance, configuration, and network access. Use a dedicated directory so the server files and backups are easy to identify. Keep an untouched copy of the downloaded JAR and record the Java version used for each server.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Install a current Java runtime
Install an up-to-date Java runtime compatible with the current Minecraft server release. Verify that the command works from a terminal or command prompt before continuing:
java -version
If the command is not found, install Java or correct the operating system’s PATH setting. A server that starts with one Java version can fail after an operating-system update if the runtime is removed or replaced, so record the working version.
2. Download and run the official server JAR once
- Create an empty folder dedicated to the server.
- Download the current official file named in the format
minecraft_server.1.XX.X.jarand place it in that folder. - Open a terminal in the folder and run the JAR once. A typical command is
java -jar minecraft_server.1.XX.X.jar; replace the placeholder with the exact filename you downloaded. - Stop the process after it generates the initial files. Do not run the server from a personal documents folder that is routinely synchronized or cleaned automatically.
3. Accept the EULA
Open the generated eula.txt, read the terms, and change the setting to eula=true only if you agree. The server will not continue until the file records acceptance. Keep the file with the server so an upgrade does not accidentally remove the setting.
4. Configure server.properties
Edit server.properties with a plain-text editor. At minimum, review the game mode, MOTD, difficulty, view distance, and any access or gameplay settings relevant to your group. Change one setting at a time when diagnosing a problem, and keep a dated copy of the file before major changes. The level-name value identifies the world directory; changing it without moving or renaming the matching folder can make the server appear to start with a new world.

5. Start, test, and stop cleanly
Start the server with the same Java command used in step two. Watch the console until it reports that the world is ready, then connect from the host machine or local network first. Use the console’s normal stop command when shutting down so pending world data is written safely. Force-closing the process or powering off the machine can corrupt the world.
6. Allow network traffic
Permit the Java process through the operating-system firewall. Players on the same local network can test without router changes; players outside that network generally need a router port-forwarding rule to the server machine and a firewall rule that permits the server port. Router menus differ by manufacturer, so document the internal address, rule, and port. Never publish an administrative console or remote-management service to the internet simply to make player access work.
Minecraft’s official guidance specifically cautions that home-network configuration is involved. If you cannot confidently identify the correct private machine, firewall scope, and router rule, use Realms or a managed host instead of experimenting on a production network.
Bedrock Edition: official Dedicated Server setup
Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) is official, free software for hosting a Bedrock Edition multiplayer world. The current official download page lists these system requirements:
| Requirement | Official minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows Server 2016 or later, or Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later |
| Processor | Intel Core i3-3210 or AMD A8-7600 equivalent |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM |
| Storage | 180 MB to 1 GB |
| Network | Broadband connection |
These are software-page requirements, not a guarantee that a large world with many simultaneous players will perform well. Leave room for the operating system, logs, backups, and world growth.

1. Download and extract the package
- Download the official Bedrock Dedicated Server ZIP for the supported Windows or Ubuntu environment.
- Create an empty directory and extract the ZIP there. Avoid extracting over an older release until you have a verified backup.
- Keep the executable, configuration files, and generated world directories together so updates and backups remain predictable.
2. Launch the server
On Windows, start bedrock_server. On Ubuntu, open a terminal in the extracted directory and run:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ./bedrock_server
Start it once before copying an existing world. The first run creates the directory structure that the server expects.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match3. Configure properties and the active world
Edit server.properties to set the server name, gameplay options, player access, and network ports. Set level-name to the world folder that should load. A spelling or capitalization mismatch can cause the server to create or select a different world, so compare the value with the actual directory name.
4. Add packs and an existing world
Bedrock’s documented folders include worlds, behavior_packs, and resource_packs. Put shared behavior packs and resource packs in their respective directories, then configure the world to use them as required by the pack documentation. To import an existing Bedrock world, first start the server once, stop it cleanly, and then copy the world into the generated world structure. Preserve the original until you have confirmed that the server opens the copied world correctly.
5. Configure the firewall
Allow the Bedrock process through the operating-system firewall. Microsoft’s setup example uses UDP ports 19132 and 19133 when those are the configured server ports. Open only the ports you actually use, and keep the rule limited to the server process where the operating system allows it. If outside players must connect, configure the router to forward the selected UDP port to the Bedrock host and test from a different network.
Best Value
Network, account, and world safety
Test in layers
- Connect locally on the host machine.
- Connect from another device on the same network.
- Ask a trusted player on a different network to connect.
This order identifies whether a failure is caused by the server process, the local firewall, or the router and internet path. Do not change several layers at once; otherwise you will not know which change solved the problem.
Back up before updates
Stop the server cleanly before copying a world. Back up the world directory, server.properties, the EULA file, and any behavior or resource packs. Keep at least one backup away from the server machine. Create another backup before changing the server version, importing packs, or making major configuration changes. Test a restore on a separate directory rather than assuming that a backup is usable.
Limit access
Use the server’s allow-list or equivalent access controls for a private group, choose strong passwords for the hosting account, and grant administrative privileges only to people who need them. Keep the server software and operating system current, but read the release notes and back up first. A version change can alter world behavior or pack compatibility even when the server starts normally.
Java and Bedrock cross-play: set expectations
Native edition compatibility is the first constraint: Java clients join Java hosted games, and Bedrock clients join Bedrock worlds, servers, or Realms. Therefore, a single ordinary Java server is not a drop-in solution for Bedrock players, and a Bedrock Dedicated Server is not a drop-in solution for Java players. If cross-edition play is a requirement, ask a provider for explicit documentation of the supported client combinations, versions, limitations, and maintenance responsibility before paying. Do not infer support from a plan that merely lists “Minecraft.”
How much RAM does a Minecraft server need?
There is no responsible one-number answer for every server. Bedrock Dedicated Server lists 4 GB RAM as an official system requirement, but that is a baseline for the software and environment, not a capacity guarantee for a particular player count. Java self-hosting has no single RAM figure in the official setup sequence because the workload changes with world activity and configuration.
Recommended Free Tools
Estimate resource needs from the variables that actually change load:
- Edition and server software version.
- Number of simultaneous players and how often they join or leave.
- View distance and simulation distance.
- World size, exploration rate, and number of active chunks.
- Entities, farms, redstone systems, and other always-running activity.
- Mods, plugins, behavior packs, and resource packs.
- Operating-system overhead, backups, logs, and monitoring.
Start with the provider’s documented allocation or the official BDS baseline, monitor memory and CPU while the real group plays, and increase resources only when measurements show a sustained bottleneck. Allocating more memory than the machine can physically support can make performance worse by forcing the operating system to swap.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server starts but nobody can join
- Confirm every player is on the matching edition and latest release.
- Check that the server process is still running and has finished loading the world.
- Verify the operating-system firewall rule and the configured port.
- For internet players, verify that the router forwards the correct protocol and port to the current private address of the server machine.
- Test locally, then from another network, so you know which layer fails.
The wrong world loads
- Check the exact
level-namevalue against the directory name. - Stop the server before moving or renaming world folders.
- Confirm that the copied world is in the generated directory structure, especially on Bedrock.
- Restore the original backup if an import produced unexpected terrain or missing content.
The server crashes after an update
- Stop using the upgraded files for the live world until you have a backup.
- Review the console output for a Java runtime mismatch, missing pack, or invalid property.
- Restore the previous server files and world copy if the release is incompatible with your setup.
- Change one component at a time—server version, runtime, pack, or property—so the cause is identifiable.
Players report lag
- Check CPU, memory, and network usage while the lag occurs rather than after the event.
- Reduce view or simulation distance in measured increments.
- Look for concentrated entity activity, farms, or rapid exploration generating new chunks.
- Move a geographically distant group to a nearer data-center region if using a managed host.
- Do not assume additional RAM alone will fix CPU saturation or network latency.
Budgeting the real cost
Self-hosting can avoid a monthly hosting charge, but the operator still pays in electricity, hardware wear, bandwidth, backup storage, and time. Realms replaces those administrative tasks with a subscription and a fixed feature set. A managed host adds a recurring fee that may include support, backups, a control panel, and scaling options. Compare the complete monthly and renewal price, not an introductory number, and include optional storage, extra backups, taxes, cancellation conditions, and the cost of moving your world later.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- List the edition each player owns and require everyone to update to the latest release.
- Estimate concurrent players and identify whether mods, plugins, behavior packs, or resource packs are essential.
- Choose self-hosting only if you can maintain the software, backups, firewall, and router safely.
- Choose Realms when a small group values automatic backups and minimal administration over deep server control.
- Choose a managed host when support, data-center location, uptime options, or scaling justify recurring cost.
- Before purchase, verify edition, player slots, resource allocation, storage, backups, region, migration access, support, uptime terms, and cancellation rules.
- Back up the world before every version change and test restoration before inviting the full group.
