Realms is better for a small group that wants an always-available private world without managing a server. A dedicated server is better if you want more configuration control and are prepared to set up and maintain the host. First check which edition everyone plays: ordinary Java and Bedrock Realms and servers are separate, so they are not a standard way for Java and Bedrock players to play together.
Can Java and Bedrock players use the same Realm or server?
Generally, no. Choose hosting that matches the group’s edition. Java Realms are for Java players; Bedrock Realms support cross-play among supported Bedrock devices. Dedicated servers also use separate Java or Bedrock server software. Minecraft’s edition guide and Realms page describe those edition-specific options.

“Cross-platform” means play across supported devices within the same edition; it does not mean Java and Bedrock can ordinarily join one another’s Realm or server.
What is the practical difference?
| Factor | Realms | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and maintenance | Managed through Minecraft and intended to be easy to set up. | You install and configure the software yourself or rent hosting, then manage availability and connection settings. |
| Access when the owner is offline | Included: invited players can access the active world while the owner is offline. | Depends on whether the host computer or hosting provider is running and reachable. |
| Control | Private invited world with settings and world-slot management. | More direct configuration control; specific options depend on the software and hosting arrangement. |
| Simultaneous players | Owner plus two on Bedrock Realms, or owner plus ten on Bedrock Realms Plus and Java Realms, according to Minecraft’s plan page checked October 3, 2026. | Depends on hardware or hosting and workload; no universal capacity figure is established. |
| Price model | Subscription; current US-listed prices are shown below. | Official server software is free; hardware, electricity, connectivity, or rented hosting may cost extra. |
| Backups and worlds | Minecraft says Realms includes free backups and allows world downloads for 18 months after subscription expiry. | The operator chooses and manages backups; check any hosting provider’s terms. |
How many people can play on a Realm?
Minecraft’s official Realms page displayed the following USD monthly prices and simultaneous player limits when checked on October 3, 2026. The owner is included in each limit:

| Plan | Listed price | Simultaneous players | Edition and included extras |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedrock Realms | $3.99 USD/month | Owner plus two players | Bedrock |
| Bedrock Realms Plus | $7.99 USD/month | Owner plus ten players | Bedrock; includes access to the rotating Marketplace Pass catalog |
| Java Realms | $7.99 USD/month | Owner plus ten players | Java; Marketplace access is not included |
Minecraft also lists three persistent world slots, of which only the active world is playable at a time, free backups, and always-on access. The invitation list can exceed the number of players allowed to play simultaneously. Prices are the official US-listed figures checked on October 3, 2026; storefront, taxes, and regional pricing may differ, so confirm the terms at purchase.
The page describes invited friends playing the active world from supported devices while the owner is offline. That is a product-page description, not an independent reliability test. Read the current Minecraft Realms plans and FAQ for the live terms.

Do you need Realms to run a Minecraft server?
No. Minecraft’s official Java and Bedrock server software is free. A Realms subscription is not required to run a Java server; Bedrock has its own official dedicated-server download as well. “Free software” does not mean operating a server has no costs: self-hosting uses your own hardware, electricity, and internet connection, while rented hosting has provider-specific charges.
- Java: Minecraft’s official server download and setup information provides the server software; setup requires a compatible Java Runtime Environment and the server JAR.
- Bedrock: The official Bedrock Dedicated Server download is intended for Bedrock multiplayer. Check its stated requirements and supported Windows or Linux configurations before installing.
- Remote players: Players connecting from outside your local network may require firewall and network configuration. The official setup guidance explains this requirement.
For Bedrock, Microsoft Learn documents file-based settings and copying an existing world folder into the server’s worlds directory in its dedicated-server setup guide.

When should you choose Realms?
- Your group is within the plan’s simultaneous-player limit.
- You want an always-available private world without maintaining a computer or configuring network access.
- You value managed backups and the ability for invited friends to play when the owner is offline.
- Everyone is using the same edition supported by the Realm.
When is a dedicated server the better choice?
- You want more direct control over configuration than Realms provides.
- You have someone comfortable installing software, managing the host, and handling network access where needed.
- You want to operate a server without a Realms subscription, accepting the hardware or hosting costs involved.
- You can match the server software to the group’s edition and choose hosting capacity appropriate to your workload.
A dedicated server does not have one universal player limit or cost: both depend on the system and hosting arrangement. The official software pages do not establish a single capacity figure.

Yes. A cloud virtual machine is one way to run a Java dedicated server without hosting it on a home computer. AWS published an EC2 Java server tutorial on December 7, 2023, demonstrating that route and its configuration control. It is an example, not evidence that cloud hosting is cheaper, easier, or better for every group; the tutorial does not settle current fees or service guarantees for your situation.

Make the choice in this order
- Match the edition. Confirm whether the group plays Java or Bedrock; ordinary Realms and server options do not bridge the two editions.
- Check the simultaneous player count. If your group fits a Realm plan and wants minimal administration, Realms is the simpler fit.
- Decide who will operate the host. Choose a dedicated server only if someone can handle setup, ongoing availability, and connection configuration—or select rented hosting that fits those needs.
- Compare the actual costs and terms. For Realms, verify the current regional subscription details. For dedicated hosting, account for the specific hardware or provider, backups, and operating arrangements rather than assuming the free software makes hosting free.
