To find a pillager outpost, search the biomes where outposts can generate or use a seed-matched structure finder. To clear one safely, approach under cover, kill the banner captain first, then secure the tower and surrounding features from the inside out. Breaking the tower alone does not stop pillagers from spawning; permanent control requires spawn-proofing the larger spawn area.

This guide separates Java-specific spawning information from Bedrock 1.21 raid mechanics, because commands, generation rules, and farm designs are not interchangeable between editions.
What a pillager outpost is and why players clear one
A pillager outpost is a hostile structure built around a tall wooden watchtower. Pillagers can spawn around it, patrol the surrounding terrain, and defend the tower with crossbows. The site is useful for more than its chest: it can contain banners, crop patches, cages, and uncommon generated rewards, and its banner captain is a repeatable source of Ominous Bottles in current 1.21-era mechanics.
Players usually visit an outpost for one of four reasons:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- To obtain combat supplies such as crossbows, arrows, and food from the chest.
- To rescue an allay or iron golem from a generated cage.
- To collect the Sentry armor trim, banners, crops, or other site features.
- To obtain an Ominous Bottle for deliberately starting a raid sequence later.
An outpost is not automatically attached to a village. The two structures generate independently, so a nearby village is possible but never guaranteed.
Where pillager outposts generate
Village-compatible biomes
Outposts can appear in several broad, relatively open biomes where villages may also generate. Search plains, deserts, savannas, taigas, snowy plains, and meadows. These areas provide long sight lines, making the tower easier to recognize, but they also leave you exposed to crossbows while approaching.
#1 Best Overall
Mountain and highland biomes
Outposts can also generate in mountain biomes, including groves, snowy slopes, jagged peaks, frozen peaks, and cherry groves. Elevation changes can hide the lower part of the structure, so scan ridgelines and listen for pillagers rather than relying only on a distant visual landmark.
Why a village is not a reliable locator
Villages are useful navigation landmarks, not outpost detectors. Because placement is independent, searching outward from every village will miss many outposts and waste time. A pillager patrol is equally unreliable as a guide: patrols can appear without an outpost nearby and do not provide a dependable bearing to one.
How to find an outpost in survival
Use a systematic exploration route
- Choose a direction from your base and travel in a straight line or a deliberate grid rather than wandering randomly.
- Prioritize the biomes listed above, especially open plains, savannas, snowy plains, meadows, and mountain slopes.
- Climb small rises and scan for the distinctive tall wooden watchtower. The tower is easier to spot from an elevated position than from a forest floor.
- Listen for pillager crossbows and hostile-mob sounds when terrain or weather blocks your view.
- Mark coordinates, explored borders, and any villages you pass so you do not search the same area twice.
Bring a bed, food, blocks, and a shield even when you are only scouting. A patrol or an unexpectedly close outpost can turn a routine expedition into a fight, and a marked fallback point prevents a long recovery trip.
Use a seed-and-edition-matched finder
If you know the world seed, a structure finder is normally the fastest non-command method. The finder documentation currently covers Java and Bedrock positions through version 26.3 and was updated on 7 October 2026. Accuracy depends on choosing the exact edition and game version that generated your world.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Copy the world seed from the world-creation screen or the appropriate in-game seed command.
- Open the structure-finder map and enter the seed.
- Select Java or Bedrock, then select the precise game version rather than an approximate release.
- Choose the pillager-outpost structure and inspect the marked coordinates.
- Copy the displayed coordinates. The tool can also provide a ready-made teleport command when commands are available in your world.
A finder result is only as reliable as its inputs. A Java seed selected under Bedrock, or an older version selected for a newly upgraded world, can produce coordinates that do not match what you see in-game.
Use the in-game locate command
In a cheats-enabled world, run:
/locate structure pillager_outpost
The client returns the nearest matching structure coordinates. Command names and argument suggestions can vary slightly by edition and version, so type /locate structure and use the current autocomplete list if the complete command is rejected. Teleport only after checking the returned coordinates and your world’s dimension.
Preparation checklist before you approach
Outposts are manageable when you control line of sight. They become dangerous when you sprint into the open top platform and allow several crossbows to fire at once.
Essential equipment
- Bow or crossbow and ammunition: Ranged damage lets you remove exposed pillagers before entering the tower.
- Shield: Keep it ready while crossing open ground or turning corners. It can block incoming crossbow shots when timed correctly.
- Strong food: Carry enough to recover between engagements rather than fighting while low on health.
- Building blocks: Use them for a covered approach, temporary walls, stair closures, and emergency retreat routes.
- Torches: Mark secured levels and illuminate dark interiors while you search chests and cages.
- Bed or other fallback point: Set a recovery location before the fight if the outpost is far from home.
- Water bucket: Useful where cliffs, snowy slopes, or tower falls make terrain and fall damage a concern.
Choose an approach that limits crossbow angles
Do not walk directly toward the tower across a flat field if a ridge, tree line, or hill can hide you. Build a short covered trench or a two-block-high wall as you advance. The goal is not an elaborate fortification; it is to break line of sight often enough that you can heal, reload, and choose the next target.

1. Secure the outside perimeter
From cover, eliminate pillagers that can see your approach. Move in short stages, place blocks when necessary, and keep an escape path behind you. Avoid chasing a fleeing target into an area where another group has a clear shot.
2. Identify and kill the banner captain
The captain carries the distinctive ominous banner. Prioritize this pillager when you can make the shot safely. In current 1.21 mechanics, a captain defeated outside a raid can drop an Ominous Bottle. That bottle is now the deliberate way to obtain Bad Omen; the effect is no longer applied automatically by killing an outside-raid captain.
Mojang’s Bedrock Edition 1.21 release notes state: “It is no longer given to players that defeat a Raid Captain outside a Raid.” The wording refers to Bad Omen. The captain can still provide the bottle that lets you choose whether to apply it.
3. Take the tower one level at a time
Once the immediate exterior is quiet, enter through a side or lower opening rather than jumping onto the exposed top platform. Block side angles with temporary walls, climb one level, and clear that level before moving higher. Pillagers can appear around corners, so keep the shield ready and do not open a chest while another floor remains unsecured.
4. Secure the top and collect the chest
The top platform offers a wide view but also exposes you to every available firing angle. Approach it from a protected stair or blocked doorway, remove remaining pillagers, and only then open the chest. Collect banners and other useful blocks after confirming that no nearby exterior group still has a shot into the tower.
5. Check cages and nearby generated features
Walk the perimeter after the tower is secure. Generated cages can hold allays or iron golems; freeing an allay may be the main reason for the trip. Look for banner placements, crop patches, wool, and other site features, and check the area around the tower rather than assuming every reward is inside the chest.
Ominous Bottles, Bad Omen, and starting a raid
What changed in 1.21-era mechanics
Ominous Bottles are consumed to apply Bad Omen. Mojang’s Bedrock 1.21 notes list five bottle variations, one for each Bad Omen level, and describe a 1 hour 40 minute Bad Omen duration. The bottle therefore gives you control over timing instead of forcing a raid immediately after a captain kill.

How entering a village works
When a player with Bad Omen enters a village, the effect changes to a 30-second Raid Omen. A raid begins after that warning period unless the effect is removed. Drinking milk before the raid starts cancels the effect and prevents the raid from triggering.
- Kill the banner captain and collect the Ominous Bottle.
- Leave the outpost and decide whether the current location and equipment are suitable for a raid.
- Drink the bottle only when you are ready to apply Bad Omen.
- Enter a village to begin the 30-second Raid Omen countdown.
- Drink milk during the warning period if you changed your mind or entered the village accidentally.
Do not drink the bottle while still preparing a base or escorting a villager. The long Bad Omen duration is useful precisely because you can postpone the village entry until defenses, beds, supplies, and an escape route are ready.
What you can find at an outpost
| Feature or reward | What to expect | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Outpost chest | Combat-oriented supplies such as crossbows, arrows, and food | Replenishes equipment for early or mid-game expeditions |
| Banner captain | Can provide an Ominous Bottle outside a raid under current 1.21 mechanics | Lets you choose when to apply Bad Omen |
| Cages | May contain allays or iron golems | Rescue targets can be more valuable than ordinary chest items |
| Site decorations and patches | Banners, crop patches, wool, and related generated features | Useful building materials and visual resources |
| Sentry armor trim | A possible outpost-related armor-trim find | Provides a distinctive customization option |
Generation is variable, so one outpost may not contain every feature. Search the tower, cages, and surrounding grounds before leaving.
Does destroying the tower stop pillager spawning?
No. Removing or dismantling the visible watchtower does not disable the outpost’s spawning behavior. The structure and the spawn area are separate concerns.

Java’s documented spawn volume
For Java Edition, documented outpost spawning uses a 72 × 54 × 72 block box centered on the highest watchtower level. That volume extends well beyond the wooden structure, which is why pillagers can continue appearing after the tower has been stripped down.
How to make an area safe
- Decide whether you want a neutral base area or a functioning outpost farm. The two goals require opposite treatment of the spawn volume.
- For a base, map the broader 72 × 54 × 72 area around the tower’s highest level rather than only the footprint of the building.
- Spawn-proof surfaces with blocks and other edition-appropriate methods, including suitable slabs or lighting where those mechanics apply.
- Recheck caves, ledges, roofs, and terrain pockets inside the volume. Leaving a small valid surface can preserve unwanted spawning.
- For a farm, do not randomly destroy the tower. Preserve or redesign the documented spawn volume according to a farm plan that matches your Java version.
Exact spawn-proofing details differ between Java and Bedrock and can change with game updates. Label any farm dimensions or block choices by edition and version before building.

Java and Bedrock: what you must keep separate
| Comparison point | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Structure finding | Use a finder set to the exact Java version, or the current in-game locate autocomplete | Use a finder set to the exact Bedrock version, or the current in-game locate autocomplete |
| Documented spawning detail | Outpost spawning is documented in a 72 × 54 × 72 box centered on the highest watchtower level | The cited 72 × 54 × 72 rule is Java-specific; do not apply it automatically |
| Captain and Bad Omen timing | Verify behavior against the Java version you are playing before building a raid workflow | Bedrock 1.21 notes describe Ominous Bottles, five Bad Omen variations, 1 hour 40 minutes of Bad Omen, and a 30-second Raid Omen |
| Command syntax | /locate structure pillager_outpost is the documented form to try; use autocomplete if needed |
Try the same structure form, then follow the current client’s autocomplete because argument syntax can vary |
| Farm design | Use Java-specific spawn-volume calculations and spawn-proofing | Do not copy a Java farm’s dimensions or assumptions without Bedrock-specific confirmation |
The current structure-finder documentation advertises Java and Bedrock positions through version 26.3, but a finder result still requires the correct seed, edition, and version. Release-note mechanics cited for Ominous Bottles and Raid Omen are specifically Bedrock 1.21 information.
Common mistakes and how to recover
“I found a village, so an outpost must be nearby.”
There is no such guarantee. Treat the village as a resupply and navigation point, then continue a planned search or use a seed-matched finder.

“A patrol will lead me to the tower.”
Patrols do not reliably indicate an outpost’s location. If you need coordinates, use the seed workflow or the locate command instead of following patrols.
“I rushed the top platform and was overwhelmed.”
Retreat behind your approach cover, eat, and rebuild the line-of-sight advantage. Re-enter from a lower or side opening, block angles, and clear each level before exposing yourself to the top.
“The tower is gone, but pillagers keep appearing.”
That is expected. The visible structure does not define the entire spawn area. For Java, inspect and spawn-proof the documented 72 × 54 × 72 volume; for Bedrock, use rules appropriate to your exact version.
“I killed the captain but did not get Bad Omen.”
In current 1.21-era mechanics, killing an outside-raid captain no longer directly gives Bad Omen. Look for the Ominous Bottle, consume it when ready, and remember that entering a village converts Bad Omen into a 30-second Raid Omen.

A practical decision guide
If you only want the chest
Use a covered approach, ranged attacks, and a shield. Kill the captain if you want the bottle, secure the tower floor by floor, take the chest, and leave after checking that your retreat path is clear.
If you want an allay or iron golem
Make the perimeter safe before opening a cage. Pillagers can kill a rescued creature while you are still fighting around the structure, so clear nearby sight lines first and move the creature away from the outpost.
If you want a raid
Keep the Ominous Bottle until your village defenses and supplies are ready. Apply Bad Omen away from the village, then enter only when you accept the 30-second Raid Omen countdown. Milk is the cancellation option before the raid begins.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you want a permanent safe base
Do not stop at demolition. Identify the full edition-appropriate spawning area, spawn-proof it systematically, and test the perimeter after several minutes of play. Java players should account for the documented 72 × 54 × 72 volume; Bedrock players should not assume those dimensions apply.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Confirm the world edition and exact version before using a finder, command, or farm plan.
- Search the listed plains, desert, savanna, taiga, snowy, meadow, and mountain biomes.
- Do not treat villages or patrols as guaranteed indicators.
- Bring ranged weapons, a shield, food, blocks, torches, a fallback bed, and a water bucket when terrain warrants it.
- Approach under cover and avoid the exposed top platform until the tower is controlled.
- Kill the banner captain deliberately if you want an Ominous Bottle.
- Inspect the chest, cages, banners, crops, wool, and possible Sentry armor trim.
- Remember that destroying the tower does not stop spawning.
- Spawn-proof the wider area for a base, or preserve the correct spawn volume for a farm.
