To grow a mangrove tree in Minecraft, plant a mangrove propagule on a supported block, then wait or use bone meal to speed its growth. You can plant propagules underwater, and mud and clay are specifically supported planting surfaces in the official Java Edition 1.19 notes.
Get a mangrove propagule
The propagule is the plantable item that grows into a mangrove tree. Break off a fully grown propagule from a mangrove tree, or use bone meal on mangrove leaves to start a new propagule growing beneath them. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.19 release notes describe the fully grown propagule as plantable like a sapling; the earlier Snapshot 22w11a notes document the leaf-and-bone-meal method.

Plant the propagule
- Choose a planting block. The Java 1.19 notes say propagules can be planted on blocks that support normal saplings, and specifically list mud and clay.
- Place the propagule on the chosen block. It can also be planted underwater.
- Leave it to grow, or use bone meal to accelerate its growth.
How mangrove propagule growth works
A propagule grows through four stages. Bone meal accelerates those stages, but the official notes do not specify a fixed number of uses or promise that one application will produce a full tree. The tree’s exact shape and a required clearance radius are also not established in those notes.
Troubleshoot a propagule that will not grow
Check which edition and version you are playing before changing the planting area. The Java Edition 1.19 notes document the core planting and growth mechanics. For Bedrock, Mojang’s 1.19.10 update notes record fixes for propagules being blocked by leaves and destroyed by flowing water. Those are fixes documented for that update; they do not establish that every obstruction is harmless in every later version.
