If Minecraft Launcher will not open on a Windows PC or laptop, first check for Launcher updates, then confirm that the same Microsoft account with your Minecraft license is signed in to the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app. If that does not help, try Windows’ Repair option, reinstall the Launcher, and troubleshoot Microsoft Store only if the Store itself will not open. The symptom matters: a Launcher that never starts is different from a game that fails after the Launcher opens.
Identify what happens when you try to open the Launcher
Before changing anything, note whether nothing happens, a window appears and closes, an error appears, or the app gets stuck in a sign-in loop. Also note whether you installed the Launcher from Microsoft Store or Minecraft.net. These details help distinguish a startup problem from a sign-in or installation issue; none of these symptoms alone identifies the cause.

Check for a Minecraft Launcher update
Minecraft’s Windows download page recommends checking for updates when the Launcher will not open. If you can reach its account settings, open Settings > About and check for available updates. The same page offers installation through Microsoft Store or its Download Launcher button, and advises contacting Minecraft Support if the problem remains unresolved: Minecraft for Windows download.

Make sure the licensed Microsoft account is being used
Minecraft Help recommends signing in to the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app with the same Microsoft account—the one that has the Minecraft license. If different accounts are active in those apps, sign out and use the licensed account consistently, then try opening the Launcher again. Account mismatch is one possible troubleshooting issue, not a proven explanation for every startup failure.
Repair the Launcher in Windows
If the Launcher is installed as a Windows app and Windows offers repair controls, try Repair before resetting or reinstalling. Microsoft notes that these options are not available for every app.

Windows 11
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Minecraft Launcher, select its menu, then choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available, and try launching Minecraft again.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to Advanced options and try Reset, if available.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select Minecraft Launcher, then choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available, and test the Launcher. If that fails or is unavailable, try Reset, if offered.
Microsoft documents these controls for some apps in its Windows guidance: Repair apps and programs in Windows. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; that lifecycle date does not establish that an unsupported Windows 10 PC caused a Launcher problem.
Reinstall using an official Windows route
If updates, account checks, and available Windows repair options do not resolve the startup problem, uninstall and reinstall the Launcher. Minecraft documents Microsoft Store and Minecraft.net as Windows installation routes; Minecraft Help also lists the Xbox app as an alternative when Microsoft Store installation fails. The routes are not interchangeable in every situation: choose according to whether Store works and whether the problem is installation or launching.

- Microsoft Store: Use this route if Store opens and you can sign in with the Microsoft account intended for the Launcher.
- Minecraft.net: Download the Windows Launcher from Minecraft’s official download page. Minecraft Help says the Minecraft.net installer still requires a Microsoft Store login to install properly.
- Xbox app: Minecraft Help documents this as another installation option when installing through Microsoft Store fails.

If Microsoft Store itself will not launch, Microsoft suggests resetting its cache with wsreset.exe, checking for Windows updates, and verifying your time and location settings. These steps target Microsoft Store; they are not a guaranteed fix for a Launcher that fails while Store works.

- Press the Windows key, type
wsreset.exe, and run the command. Wait for the process to finish. - Check for and install available Windows updates, then restart if prompted.
- Check that your Windows time and location settings are correct, then try opening Store again.

When to contact Minecraft Support
If the Launcher still will not start after the relevant steps, contact Minecraft Support, as Minecraft recommends. Include the exact error text or describe what happens when you launch it. Also note your Windows version, where you installed the Launcher, and which Microsoft account is signed in to the Launcher, Store, and Xbox app. Those details help support distinguish a startup failure from an account or installation problem.
