Choose the edition that matches your community’s devices and technical requirements. Bedrock is the cross-platform-oriented edition for Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS and Windows Mobile, and it has official Bedrock Dedicated Server software. Java is the PC-focused edition with its own server software, release selection and different technical behavior.
For a server owner, the important differences are not just graphics or menus. World storage, commands, command blocks, redstone timing, farm mechanics, networking settings, Realm services and migration all require edition-specific decisions. Native Java and Bedrock servers are separate; mixed-edition access requires an additional compatibility layer that must be checked for the exact versions and features you intend to run.

Java and Bedrock are separate server ecosystems
Mojang publishes separate official server software for the two editions. A Java server uses the Java server download and requires Java to be available from the command line. The official documentation’s first prerequisite is: “First, make sure you can use java from the command line.” Bedrock uses Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS), an executable or supplied command-line file intended for Bedrock worlds.
The distinction affects more than the startup file. Each edition has its own world format, command implementation, redstone behavior and administration settings. A world folder, command block or technical farm that works in one edition should be treated as untested in the other until it has been converted and validated.

Which players can connect?
| Question | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Official client coverage | PC edition with selectable historical releases | Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS and Windows Mobile are listed in the official edition guide |
| Official dedicated server | Separate Java server software; Java must run from the command line | Official Bedrock Dedicated Server, launched with its executable or command-line file |
| Native cross-edition connection | Not provided by the Java server itself | Not provided by BDS itself |
| Realms service | Java Realms | Bedrock Realms and Realms Plus |
A PC-only community can select Java or Bedrock based on tooling and gameplay requirements. A community that includes console or mobile players has a strong reason to evaluate Bedrock first, because those platforms are part of Bedrock’s official client reach. Confirm the exact platform, account and release requirements before publishing connection instructions: a player owning Minecraft on one platform does not automatically imply access to every edition on another platform.
Java players and Bedrock players on one address
A Java server accepts Java clients, and a Bedrock server accepts Bedrock clients. They do not natively share every server or Realm. Mixed-edition access therefore needs a separately maintained compatibility layer or a service that explicitly supports both client protocols. Treat that as an architectural dependency, not as a switch in server.properties.
- Check whether the compatibility layer supports the Java and Bedrock versions you will pin.
- Verify authentication, skins, permissions, command behavior and inventories for both client types.
- Test movement, combat, chat, resource packs, forms and custom mechanics with a real account from each edition.
- Do not advertise cross-platform access until the complete path—from client login to every required plugin or add-on—has passed testing.
Official server software and operating requirements
Java server
- Download the official Java server software for the release you intend to run.
- Install a compatible Java runtime and confirm that
javaworks from the host’s command line. - Place the server files in a dedicated directory with permissions for the service account.
- Start the supplied server program, follow its first-run licensing and configuration prompts, then stop it cleanly before editing generated files.
- Pin the client release to the server release. Do not assume a newer launcher profile can connect safely to an older server.
The exact Java runtime requirement depends on the server release. Because the documentation supplied for this article does not establish a universal Java version, check the release’s own server notes rather than copying a version number from another installation.
Bedrock Dedicated Server
- Download the Bedrock Dedicated Server package that matches the Bedrock release you plan to host.
- Extract it to a dedicated directory and launch the provided executable or command-line file.
- Review the generated configuration and world directories before allowing public connections.
- Set the player limit, networking options and other behavior in
server.properties. - Test with the same Bedrock release and supported device types that your community will use.
Minecraft’s official documentation describes BDS as the software that lets you host a multiplayer Bedrock world and says it is designed for performance and cross-platform play. That statement describes its design goal; it is not a benchmark or a promise of a particular player count on your hardware.

World formats make migration a project
Microsoft Learn identifies world format as a major Java/Bedrock difference. A Java world directory is not a drop-in Bedrock world directory, and copying files between editions can produce missing data, broken entities or unusable chunks. Conversion should be planned like a data migration.
Safe migration workflow
- Freeze the source world. Stop the server and prevent players from writing new chunks while you make the conversion copy.
- Make multiple backups. Keep an untouched source archive and a separate working copy. Store at least one backup outside the server host.
- Record dependencies. List datapacks, command functions, resource packs, add-ons, custom dimensions, entities and scoreboard objectives.
- Convert with a tool or service that explicitly supports your source and target editions. Confirm its supported release range before processing the world.
- Open the converted copy on an isolated test server. Never use the only copy as the first test.
- Validate representative areas. Check spawn, bases, farms, portals, villages, redstone rooms, inventories, maps, signs, command blocks and dimensions.
- Invite a small test group. Have players on the target edition exercise movement, combat, trading and any custom systems.
- Keep a rollback plan. Publish the migration only after you can restore the original world and explain what progress will not carry over.
Conversion quality depends on the particular converter, versions and content in the world. The official documentation does not establish that every block, entity, command or mechanic has a lossless mapping.
Commands and command blocks are not interchangeable
Microsoft describes Bedrock’s command structure as similar to Java versions up to 1.13. That comparison is a warning against copying modern Java commands into Bedrock unchanged. Syntax, selectors, execution context, data access and available arguments can differ.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What to audit when porting a map
- Selectors: Check entity filters, range syntax, scores, tags and target type names.
executechains: Rebuild the chain around the target edition’s execution grammar instead of editing one argument at a time.- Command blocks: Test conditional, chain and repeating blocks in their actual order and tick behavior.
- Functions and datapacks: Confirm whether the target edition supports the same packaging model and file structure.
- Scoreboards and storage: Recreate objectives and persistent state using the target edition’s supported commands.
- Permissions: Verify operator levels, command availability and how commands behave for non-operator players.
Use a test world with a written checklist. A command that returns a successful-looking message can still select the wrong entities or run in the wrong dimension. Port one subsystem at a time, record the expected result, and remove the old version only after the replacement passes.

Redstone, timing and technical farms can change
Redstone is another edition boundary. Microsoft Learn documents edition-specific redstone behavior and warns that complex circuits may not work as well in Bedrock. The practical consequence is that a Java tutorial, farm design or exploit-dependent machine is a reference, not a guarantee.
Systems that deserve edition-specific tests
- Observer, piston and hopper timing circuits
- Quasi-connectivity-dependent machines
- Chunk-loading and entity-processing designs
- Mob farms that depend on spawning, pathfinding or simulation distance
- Iron, raid, villager and trading systems
- Duplication or update-order exploits
- Large storage and item-sorting arrays
Build a small reproduction of each critical machine on the target server version. Measure whether items arrive, entities move, clocks remain synchronized and the machine recovers after a restart. Do not promise a farm’s output, uptime or safety merely because a design works in the other edition; no controlled performance figures establish universal equivalence.
Administration settings differ
Bedrock’s server.properties includes a maximum-player setting, networking compression controls and other server behavior. Read the comments and release documentation for the exact property names and accepted values in your BDS build. Do not transplant a Java configuration file or assume every Java property exists on Bedrock.

Hardware planning must therefore use your world size, simulation settings, plugins or add-ons, player behavior and observed load—not an unsupported one-size-fits-all number.

LAN play and online prerequisites
LAN play requires compatible versions and supported devices on the same network. A host can be visible locally while still failing because one client is on a different release or because the device is not supported by that edition. Document the network requirement in onboarding instructions instead of treating LAN as an internet-server substitute.
Console players may also need the online subscription required by their platform. That requirement is controlled by the platform holder, not by the Minecraft server software. State it separately from your server address and edition instructions, and recheck it when console policies change.
Realms are not a cross-edition shortcut
The official edition guide distinguishes Java Realms from Bedrock Realms and Realms Plus. A Java Realm is not a Bedrock Realm, and neither should be described as a universal bridge between editions. If your community changes edition, plan for a separate world, service and migration decision rather than assuming the Realm can be switched without consequences.

Godlike.Host Minecraft hosting offers Java, Bedrock and modded Minecraft server hosting through its own game panel, with up to three free backups a day and restore.
- Does it offer the official Java server, Bedrock Dedicated Server, or an explicitly supported compatibility layer?
- Can you pin the server and client versions instead of being forced onto the newest release?
- Are automated backups restorable, and can you download an independent copy?
- Which ports and network protocols are available for the edition you selected?
- What player-limit controls, logs and restart options are exposed?
- Can you install the plugins, datapacks or add-ons your map requires?
- Does support cover console and mobile clients, or only Windows clients?
Ask for these answers in writing before moving a live world. “Cross-platform” can mean several Bedrock devices, not Java-to-Bedrock interoperability.
Decision framework for server owners
Choose Bedrock when client reach is the priority
Bedrock is the natural starting point when your roster includes Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Android, iOS or Windows Mobile players, or when you want the official BDS path designed for cross-platform play. Confirm the devices, online-account requirements and version policy before launch.
Choose Java when PC release control and Java-specific systems matter
Java suits a PC-only community that needs selectable historical releases or depends on Java-oriented technical designs and administration workflows. Audit every datapack, command system and farm against the exact server release.
Use a mixed-edition design only with a tested bridge
A compatibility layer can broaden access, but it adds another versioned component. Select this approach only when the extra testing, troubleshooting and feature limitations are acceptable. Keep separate test accounts and worlds for Java and Bedrock clients.
Launch checklist
- Identify every client platform and edition your community owns.
- Select the server software that matches those clients.
- Pin the release and document the upgrade procedure.
- Test the official server package on an isolated world.
- Configure player limits, networking, permissions and backups for that edition.
- Audit commands, command blocks, datapacks, add-ons and redstone machines.
- Test LAN and internet connections from representative devices.
- If offering mixed-edition access, verify the compatibility layer with both protocols.
- Publish prerequisites, connection steps and known limitations before opening the server.
- Keep an untouched world backup and a rollback plan for every migration or update.
Bottom line for the edition choice
There is no universal winner. Bedrock is the stronger fit when console and mobile reach and official cross-platform-oriented server software are central. Java is the stronger fit for a PC-only community that values release selection and Java-specific technical behavior. World formats, commands, redstone and administration are different enough that migration and interoperability require deliberate testing. Choose from your players’ devices first, then validate the exact software, version and hosting path before committing a live world.
