Craft a beacon with five glass blocks, one Nether Star and three obsidian. To activate it, place it on a valid pyramid of mineral blocks with an unobstructed path above it. The beam shows the beacon block is active; to receive a status effect, interact with the beacon, pay with an eligible item, choose a power and confirm.

Build a pyramid to activate the beacon
The base must be made from iron, gold, diamond, emerald or netherite blocks. Center each smaller layer above the one below it. The complete four-level pyramid has a 9×9 bottom layer, then 7×7, 5×5 and 3×3 layers; it uses 164 mineral blocks, according to the Minecraft Wiki.

Place the beacon in the center of the top 3×3 layer. Keep the beam’s upward path clear. On a valid pyramid, the beacon emits its beam and is activated as a block.

Choose a beacon power
A visible beam does not by itself mean you have selected a status effect. Interact with the beacon to open its interface, put in one eligible payment item, select an available power and confirm. Eligible items are an iron ingot, gold ingot, emerald, diamond or netherite ingot. The item is consumed; you need another payment item to change the selected power.
What the four-level pyramid adds
A complete four-level base makes the secondary-power choice available in the interface. Smaller bases do not unlock that option. Exact effect ranges and the full power choices available at each base size are not established here, so avoid assuming that every pyramid grants the same options or coverage.

Why a beacon may not activate
- No valid base: Check that the pyramid uses eligible mineral blocks and that its layers are centered and complete.
- Beacon is off the center: Place it at the center of the pyramid’s top layer.
- Beam path is obstructed: Clear the route upward above the beacon.
- Beam appears, but no effect is selected: Open the interface, insert a payment item, choose a power and confirm.
Exact behavior can vary by Minecraft edition or version; the available source does not establish a current Java-versus-Bedrock breakdown.
