Commands require cheats or sufficient multiplayer permissions. In Bedrock Edition, enabling cheats permanently disables achievements for that world, even if you later turn cheats off.
Choose the right game mode
The mode determines whether you are gathering and surviving, building freely, playing within creator-set rules, or simply observing. Minecraft Help describes the modes as follows:
| Mode | Best for | How it changes play |
|---|---|---|
| Survival | Gathering resources and surviving | Resources, health, and hunger are part of play. |
| Creative | Building and experimenting | You can fly and place unlimited blocks without health, hunger, or resource concerns. |
| Adventure | Creator-designed maps and challenges | Block placement and breaking are restricted unless allowed by special items. |
| Spectator | Observing a world | You can look around without interacting with the world. |
Minecraft Help’s game mode overview explains these distinctions. Hardcore is different: it is a one-life mode, not an ordinary mode toggle, and Minecraft Help says it cannot be turned off once enabled for a world.
Change game mode with a command
Type a slash command in the chat window. For example, enter /gamemode creative to switch to Creative or /gamemode survival to switch to Survival. The command works only when commands are allowed for you; on a multiplayer server, that means having sufficient permissions.

Before enabling cheats: doing so permanently disables achievement unlocks in that world—even if you subsequently turn cheats off. If that trade-off is acceptable, open the world’s Game settings and turn on Allow Cheats, then enter the command in chat.

Mojang’s command guide, published September 22, 2023, documents command entry and these single-player access settings. Its general guidance also notes that commands have permission protections; the command examples above show the basic mode-switch syntax.
Someone else’s multiplayer world
If you are playing on a server or another person’s world, you may not have permission to use /gamemode. Ask the owner or an administrator to grant the required access or change your mode. Enabling settings on your own device does not grant authority on someone else’s world.

Use the Java Game Mode Switcher
Java Edition has a keyboard shortcut that can switch among modes without entering a chat command:
- Hold F3 and tap F4 to open the Game Mode Switcher.
- Tap F4 to cycle through the modes, or choose one with the mouse.
- Release F3 to apply the selected mode.
The switcher remembers the last mode and presents it as the first selection. Mojang documented the controls in its Java snapshot notes dated May 13, 2020. If the shortcut does not work, check that you are using Java Edition and confirm your keyboard mapping; a server may also restrict mode changes through permissions.

Mojang’s Bedrock 1.19.50 release notes, posted November 29, 2022, document two ways to enter or leave Spectator when cheats are enabled: choose Personal Game Mode in World Settings or use /gamemode spectator. Menu wording and availability can vary by platform and version, so treat those notes as version-specific guidance rather than a guarantee of identical menus on every device.

Quick Recap
If the mode will not change
- The command is rejected: confirm that commands are enabled in your single-player world, or ask the server owner or administrator about permissions.
- You are in Bedrock and need cheats: consider the permanent achievement consequence for that world before enabling Allow Cheats.
- The keyboard shortcut does nothing: confirm you are in Java Edition and check your keyboard mapping.
- You cannot find a settings option: menu labels and availability vary by edition, platform, and version. Use the command route if you have permission, or consult the edition-specific method above.
