For a first Minecraft house, build a simple block shelter, close its entrances, and light its dark areas. That can help keep hostile mobs from reaching you, but no torch layout guarantees that every mob will stay away.
How do you build a house in Minecraft?
You do not need a finished-looking house to get through your first night. Minecraft.net’s first-night guide, published June 5, 2023, explains that the aim is to put blocks between you and approaching mobs. A compact enclosure is a practical first shelter; improve its appearance once you are safe.

- Gather wood and basic tools. The Minecraft Education first-night checklist includes wood and tools among its priorities. Use what you can collect to make building blocks and craft the supplies you need.
- Choose a small, easy-to-close space. Build on clear ground or use a suitable existing opening. A temporary enclosure is faster to finish than a large house and gives you fewer openings to secure.
- Put up walls and a roof. Use blocks to separate the interior from the outside. Leave an entrance you can close with a door, and check for gaps that would let mobs walk in.
- Add light inside. Place torches in dark parts of the shelter, including corners and other areas your first placement leaves dim.
- Make a bed if you can. The Minecraft Education checklist includes a bed as a first-night priority, alongside shelter and light. It is useful preparation, but it does not replace closing and lighting the shelter.
There is no single required house shape or material in the cited beginner guidance. Prioritize a closed barrier and light over decoration.
How many torches do you need?
There is no universal torch count or spacing established for every house. The number depends on the shelter’s shape and size, the light sources available, and which areas remain dark. The official first-night guide recommends torches and describes crafting them from sticks and coal; it does not prescribe a fixed placement interval.

- MINECRAFT TOY FOR KIDS – LEGO Minecraft Zombie Dungeon (21587) building toy for boys and girls ages 8 years old and up
- 5 LEGO FIGURES – Builders can cast a Wastelands Wanderer minifigure, a slime and 3 zombies (including one with enchanted leggings and gold sword and one with diamond helmet) in their pretend play adventure stories
- GAMING-INSPIRED FUNCTIONS – Set in the Minecraft desert biome, this zombie dungeon features a rotating, zombie-spawning chamber and a sliding piece that triggers a rockfall
- INSPIRE CREATIVE STORYTELLING – The Wastelands Wanderer, equipped with a diamond pickaxe, mace and netherite armor, takes on a slime and 3 zombies in the desert biome dungeon
- ACCESSORIES FOR PRETEND PLAY – Features netherite armor, a mace, diamond pickaxe, gold sword, diamond helmet, crafting table, torch and a chest containing bread, bone and rotten flesh
Rather than follow a one-size-fits-all number, place torches around the interior and inspect for dark patches. Add light where needed, especially in corners or behind interior features. This is practical guidance, not a guarantee that a particular arrangement prevents every kind of mob activity.
What light level do hostile mobs spawn at?
The Java Edition 1.18 release notes say: “Monsters now only spawn in places where the light from blocks is 0 (sky light still prevents spawning like before).” This is a version-specific rule for Java Edition 1.18: block light must be zero for monsters to spawn under that change, while skylight continues to prevent spawning as before.

Minecraft.net’s 2023 first-night guide gives a broader beginner explanation: “Most hostile mobs will only appear when the game’s light source reaches 0 in an environment close to the player.” These statements support lighting dark areas, but they do not establish exact current parity between Java and Bedrock or cover every mob, dimension, and version. For a specific edition and version, check its current mechanics documentation.
Will a lit house keep every mob away?
No. Lighting dark areas can reduce the chance of hostile mobs appearing in the shelter under the cited spawning guidance, while walls and a closed entrance help stop mobs outside from reaching you. Those are different protections: light addresses spawning conditions, and blocks act as a physical barrier.

- AUTHENTIC GAME CHARACTERS – Building set includes Steve, Creeper and zombie minifigures, plus fun accessories like a boat, fishing rod, fish, parrot and jungle foliage

Do not treat sunlight or a lit room as complete protection. Minecraft.net notes that many Overworld hostile mobs burn in sunlight, but illagers, pillagers, and Endermen are exceptions to that behavior. The guide does not provide a comprehensive catalog of mob spawning and behavior exceptions, so avoid assuming that one lighting arrangement makes a home completely safe.

What should you prioritize on the first night?
Minecraft Education’s first-night checklist identifies wood, tools, shelter, a door, light, and a bed. In practical order, secure a basic enclosure and its entrance, then light the interior; gather the other checklist items as time and materials allow.
