To make an enchanting table, combine one book, two diamonds, and four obsidian. Place the finished table where bookshelves can sit with exactly one air block between each shelf and the table. Fifteen active bookshelves unlock the standard maximum option level of 30. When you enchant, the table offers three pseudo-randomized choices whose outcomes depend on the item, enchantment rules, and randomization—not on the decorative glyphs shown on the buttons.

Those glyphs are the Standard Galactic Alphabet (SGA), a substitution script created by game designer Tom Hall for Commander Keen. You can transliterate the letters into Latin characters, but the resulting words are flavor text and do not reveal which enchantment you will receive.

An enchanting table lets you spend experience and lapis lazuli to apply an enchantment to an item the table accepts. The interface presents three choices. Each choice is generated from the item, its enchantability rules, the available bookshelf power, and randomization. The number displayed beside an option is a level requirement or cost input to that selection process; it is not a promise that the option will produce a particular named enchantment.
Bookshelves improve the range of levels the table can offer. The normal cap is level 30, reached with 15 active bookshelves. Shelves beyond that number do not raise the standard table above level 30.

| Material | Quantity | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Book | 1 | Crafting ingredient for the table |
| Diamond | 2 | Crafting ingredient for the table |
| Obsidian | 4 | Crafting ingredient for the table |
Collect exactly one book, two diamonds, and four obsidian, then use the crafting interface to create the table. Afterward, place it in a location where you can add the required bookshelves and access the three enchantment slots.
How to build a level-30 enchanting setup
1. Choose the table’s location
Leave room around the table for shelves. The important spacing rule is one block of air between the table and each bookshelf that is meant to power it. Do not press a shelf directly against the table, and do not fill the separating space with another block.
2. Add active bookshelves
Arrange bookshelves around the table while preserving that one-block air gap. Count only shelves that meet the spacing requirement. You need 15 active shelves for the maximum standard option level of 30.
3. Check the level range
Open the table after the shelves are in place. The offered choices should include the level-30 range when your character has enough experience for that option and the item is eligible. If every offer remains lower, recount the shelves and inspect every gap for an incorrect distance or a blocked space.

4. Stop at 15 shelves
Once 15 shelves are active, adding more does not improve the ordinary enchanting table’s level cap. Extra shelves can still be part of a room’s decoration, but they do not create a stronger standard table.
Enchanting an item step by step
- Open the table. Interact with the enchanting table to display its item slot, lapis slot, and three choices.
- Insert an eligible item. Put the tool, weapon, armor piece, book, or other item accepted by the table into the item slot. The item determines which enchantment categories can be considered.
- Add lapis lazuli. Place lapis in the lapis slot. The basic workflow uses between one and three lapis lazuli, depending on the choice shown.
- Verify your experience level. Each choice displays a level requirement. You must have the required player level available before selecting it.
- Inspect all three choices. Compare the displayed level, lapis requirement, item context, and the enchantment category named by the interface. Treat the possible additional enchantments as randomized rather than guaranteed.
- Select one option. Click the choice that fits your goal and meets its level and lapis requirements. The table consumes the listed resources and applies the resulting enchantment set to the item.
- Review the result. Check the item after the enchantment completes. The glyph phrase on the button was not a coded preview of this result.
Why the three offers are not guarantees
The three slots use different level calculations. A higher displayed number means a different input to the random-selection system, not a fixed spell name. The final result is shaped by several factors:

- Bookshelf power: Active shelves expand the available level range up to the standard level-30 cap.
- The chosen slot: Each of the three offers uses its own calculation and resource requirements.
- Randomization: The selected category and any additional enchantments come from a randomized set allowed for that item and level.
For that reason, do not choose an option solely because its level number is largest. Compare the level and lapis cost with the item’s purpose and the enchantment category offered. A lower-cost choice can be the sensible pick when it matches what you need, while a level-30 choice remains probabilistic rather than deterministic.
How to compare the three choices
Use the information that describes the actual offer, not the decorative writing above it. This checklist keeps the comparison grounded in mechanics:
Rank #3
| Comparison point | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Required player level | The number shown beside the choice | Determines whether you can select it now |
| Lapis cost | The lapis amount shown for that choice | Determines the immediate material cost; basic choices use 1–3 lapis |
| Item being enchanted | The item currently in the table | Controls which enchantment categories are eligible |
| Enchantment category | The normal interface information for the offer | Helps you decide whether the result fits the item’s job |
| Additional enchantments | The extra effects that may be included after selection | These are part of the randomized result, not guaranteed by the glyph phrase |
If none of the three choices is useful, enchanting a different eligible item or changing the item placed in the table can produce a different randomized set. The table’s lettering should not be used as a fourth comparison column.
What the enchanting-table language is
The Standard Galactic Alphabet
The symbols are the Standard Galactic Alphabet, usually abbreviated SGA. It is an alphabet substitution system: each stylized glyph corresponds to a letter in the Latin alphabet. In Minecraft, it is presented as a font-like interface script rather than as a spoken language with grammar, pronunciation, or a separate translation system.
Tom Hall and Commander Keen
American game designer Tom Hall created the original Standard Galactic Alphabet for the Commander Keen series. Minecraft later adopted the letter shapes for its enchanting-table interface. Early enchantment-screen history places the SGA presentation in October 2011.
Why Minecraft uses it
The alphabet gives the enchanting screen an alien, mysterious appearance without requiring the game to create a functional language. The words look consistent because the same substitution alphabet is used, but their presence is primarily visual flavor.
Rank #4
Can you translate the runes?
Yes. Because SGA is a substitution alphabet, you can map each glyph to its corresponding Latin letter and read the resulting character sequence. A transliteration tells you what letters the interface displays.
That translation does not tell you the enchantment outcome. The interface strings are randomized flavor text, and the words shown on the buttons do not determine the selected enchantment. Even a perfectly decoded phrase is therefore not a prediction tool.
Use the ordinary choice information—the required level, lapis cost, item, and displayed enchantment category—when deciding what to click. Treat SGA decoding as a game of visual trivia or a way to understand the interface, not as a method for obtaining a specific enchantment.

“The glyphs name the enchantment.”
Accurate version: The glyphs are randomized interface text. They do not function as hidden names for the enchantment that will be applied.
Best Value
“A level-30 offer guarantees the best possible enchantment.”
Accurate version: Level 30 is the maximum standard option range, unlocked by 15 active bookshelves. The result still follows item eligibility and randomization rules.

“More than 15 bookshelves make the table stronger.”
Accurate version: Fifteen active shelves reach the ordinary level-30 cap. Additional shelves do not increase that cap.
“Any shelf near the table counts.”
Accurate version: A shelf must be positioned with exactly one air block separating it from the table to be part of the standard powered setup. Check spacing rather than proximity alone.
“The table works without lapis.”
Accurate version: The normal interaction requires lapis lazuli in addition to an eligible item and sufficient experience. The displayed choice determines whether one, two, or three lapis are required.
Troubleshooting a weak or unusable setup
The table never shows a level-30 option
- Count the active shelves; the target is 15, not simply 15 shelves somewhere in the room.
- Walk around the table and verify that every counted shelf has exactly one air block between its shelf block and the table.
- Remove anything occupying a required separating space, then reopen the table and check the offers again.
- Confirm that the item is eligible and that you have enough experience to see or select the highest offer.
An option is visible but cannot be selected
- Read the required player level shown for that choice.
- Check that the lapis slot contains the amount requested, which can be from one to three lapis in the basic workflow.
- Make sure the item has not been removed or replaced while the interface is open.
The result is not the enchantment you expected
- Remember that the three offers are pseudo-randomized.
- Check whether the item’s enchantability rules permit the desired category.
- Do not infer a promise from the SGA phrase; compare the normal offer information instead.
Extra shelves made no difference
That is expected after the 15-shelf threshold. The standard table does not exceed its level-30 cap, so additional shelves are cosmetic once all 15 active positions are supplied.

An enchanting table emits light level 7. This is a modest illumination effect rather than a replacement for dedicated lighting, but it can matter when you are designing a compact enchanting room or checking why a dark corner is not completely unlit.
Build the room around the mechanical spacing first. Once the 15 active shelves are correctly positioned, you can add decorative blocks, storage, or extra shelves in places that do not alter the required one-block air gaps.
Quick Recap
A reliable decision routine
- Prepare the infrastructure: craft the table and establish 15 correctly spaced active bookshelves.
- Prepare the resources: bring an eligible item, lapis lazuli, and enough experience for the offer you intend to select.
- Open and compare: read the three normal offer entries and note each level, lapis requirement, and enchantment category.
- Choose for the item’s job: prioritize the category that serves the tool, weapon, armor piece, or book you are enchanting.
- Accept uncertainty: additional enchantments remain randomized, even at level 30.
- Ignore the decorative cipher: SGA transliteration can be entertaining, but it cannot improve the prediction or selection process.
