Short answer: An Elytra is found in the treasure room of an End Ship, and End Ships generate only in some End Cities on the outer End islands. Defeat the Ender Dragon, use the End gateway, locate a city with a ship, take the Elytra from its treasure room, equip it in the chest slot, then press your jump key while falling to start gliding. Ordinary firework rockets extend a flight; rockets made with firework stars can injure you. Repair the wings with phantom membranes, Mending, or a second Elytra before a long trip.

Where an Elytra actually spawns
The Elytra is not a dragon drop, a village item, or a reward from the first End island. It is generated as loot in the treasure room of an End Ship. End Ships are attached to some End Cities in the outer End islands, so finding an End City does not guarantee that you have found the wings. Minecraft’s official article describes the location precisely: Elytra “can only be found in End cities, in the treasure room of an End ship.”

That determines the complete natural route:
- Enter the End and defeat the Ender Dragon.
- Use the End gateway that appears after the fight to reach the outer islands.
- Search End Cities until you find one that generated with an End Ship.
- Enter the ship’s treasure room, deal with its shulkers, and collect the Elytra.
You cannot obtain the item merely by killing the dragon. The dragon fight opens access to the region where the ship is located; the actual item is in the ship.
What to do before leaving for the outer End
An End-City expedition is both a combat trip and a void-crossing trip. Prepare for the return journey, not just the moment when you see the ship.

Finish the dragon fight and identify your gateway
After the Ender Dragon is defeated, an End gateway becomes available. The gateway is the route from the central island to the outer End islands where End Cities and End Ships generate. Record the gateway’s location or create a clearly marked approach before entering it. If you die or return unexpectedly, a visible marker makes the second trip far less stressful.
Pack for shulkers and exposed terrain
- Blocks: Use them to bridge gaps, make temporary walls, seal dangerous openings, and create a protected launch platform later.
- Food: Bring enough to recover from repeated fights and the journey home.
- Ranged protection: A ranged weapon or other protection suited to your edition helps you deal with shulkers without standing beside an exposed edge.
- Ender pearls: Keep one available for an emergency teleport to a visible ledge or platform. A pearl is not a guarantee, so do not use it as a substitute for a bridge.
- A recovery plan: Mark the gateway, avoid carrying irreplaceable equipment unnecessarily, and decide where you will retreat if several shulkers begin firing.
Once you have the Elytra, bring spare rockets, blocks, food, and an ender pearl on every serious flight. The wings make movement faster, but they do not remove the danger of the void or a bad landing.
How to search End Cities for an End Ship
Use a city-by-city search instead of assuming every city has a ship
End Cities can generate without a ship. Treat each city as a checkpoint: approach safely, scan for a ship, and leave a clear marker if there is no ship. A systematic search prevents you from repeatedly circling the same towers while believing that the item must be nearby.
From the gateway, extend bridges and platforms through the outer islands. Keep a block in your hotbar so you can stop at an island edge rather than attempting a blind jump. When a city comes into view, secure a landing area before climbing its towers. If the city has no ship, mark it and continue to another structure rather than dismantling the whole city in search of a room that is not there.
Handle shulkers before looting
Shulkers guard End-City and End-Ship interiors. Their projectiles can inflict levitation, which is especially dangerous beside an open edge: an upward drift can carry you over the void before you regain control.
- Approach from a wall or enclosed platform instead of standing on a narrow exterior ledge.
- Use blocks as a roof or side wall so projectiles cannot reach you from every direction.
- Keep your retreat route open; do not enter a room, close the only exit, and then discover that levitation has moved you away from it.
- When levitation starts near an edge, move toward the interior and place blocks between yourself and the opening. Do not chase loot while the effect is carrying you upward.
Reach the ship without gambling on the void
If the ship is separated from the city, build a covered or at least two-block-wide bridge where practical. Stop to confirm the next platform before extending farther. A slow bridge is cheaper than losing your equipment and repeating the entire End search. Keep the gateway direction in mind so the return route is recognizable.

Secure the treasure room first
Once inside an End Ship, clear or contain the nearby shulkers before opening the treasure area. Collect the Elytra and any other wanted loot only after you have a stable floor and an exit that does not require a blind jump. Put the wings somewhere safe in your inventory immediately; do not leave them in a temporary chest while you explore.

Put it in the chest slot
An Elytra works from the chest armor slot. Open your inventory, move the item into that slot, and confirm that your normal chest armor has been removed. The wings do not activate while sitting in a hotbar or backpack slot.
Before attempting a long flight, return to a wide platform near the ship or city. This gives you room to test the activation and land without risking the only Elytra you have.
Starting your first glide
- Choose a clear launch: Stand on a platform or ledge with open air in front of you. Clear towers, roofs, branches, and cave ceilings from the flight path.
- Step off the edge: Begin falling rather than trying to activate the wings while standing still.
- Press the jump key again while falling: This is the activation instruction in the Minecraft Education guide. The exact key or button depends on your device and your control settings.
- Steer with your normal movement controls: Look and move toward the open area you selected. Make small corrections first; a sharp turn close to a wall leaves little time to recover.
- Land deliberately: Aim for a broad island, a water surface, or a prepared platform. Pitch upward gradually to lose forward speed instead of turning abruptly into terrain.
The second jump is the important timing window: you must already be falling. If nothing happens, check that the Elytra is in the chest slot, that you have actually stepped into open air, and that the control assigned to jump is the one you are pressing.
Controls by platform
Java, Bedrock, console, and touchscreen editions can use different default bindings, and every edition allows remapping. Rather than memorizing a universal button, identify the control currently assigned to Jump in your settings.

If you changed your bindings, the labels in the Controls or Settings menu are authoritative for your world. A guide that gives one console button without naming the edition can be wrong for your setup.
Firework rockets: the safe way to gain speed
Use ordinary rockets, not explosive rockets
While gliding, an ordinary firework rocket gives a forward or upward boost. The safe version is the simple rocket made without a firework star. Rockets crafted with firework stars include an explosion that can damage the player, so do not use those for Elytra propulsion.
Keep rockets in an easy-to-reach hotbar slot and verify the item before launching. If a rocket has an explosive star effect, replace it with ordinary rockets before taking off.

Boost only after the glide is stable
- Launch and establish a level glide over open space.
- Point away from cliffs, towers, cave ceilings, and the island edge.
- Activate one ordinary rocket and watch the new line of travel before using another.
- Stop boosting early enough to pitch upward and land on your target.
A rocket is a movement tool, not an emergency brake. Using one while pointed at a wall or roof increases the impact speed and reduces your recovery time. In the End, reserve the first boost for open air; in the Overworld, practice above a large field or water area.
Gliding versus rocket boosting

Learn unboosted gliding first. A player who can launch, turn, and brake without a rocket can recover when supplies run out; a player who only knows boosting may turn a small mistake into a high-speed collision.
Elytra durability and repair
Durability decreases during flight, so the wings are equipment that must be maintained rather than a permanent flight ability. The Elytra reference entry on Minecraft Wiki lists 432 durability points; that figure is a published reference value accessed in 2026, not a promise that every future edition will display the same interface.
The Minecraft official article states that one phantom membrane restores about 25 percent durability. The percentage is approximate, so inspect the durability bar after repairing instead of assuming that one membrane always produces an identical displayed number.

- Place an anvil and open its interface.
- Put the damaged Elytra in the first slot.
- Put phantom membrane(s) in the repair slot.
- Check the repaired result and the experience cost shown by the anvil.
- Take the result only when you are satisfied with the repair, then verify the durability bar before flying.
Membranes are the direct consumable repair option. Bring enough for the planned route, but do not wait until the wings are nearly unusable if an anvil is available at your base.
Apply Mending for experience-based repairs
Mending repairs an Elytra when the item carries the enchantment and you collect experience while it is equipped. It is convenient for routine use because experience replaces a stockpile of membranes, but it does not remove the need to land safely: a nearly depleted Elytra still needs time and a safe place to receive that repair.
Combine two Elytra when necessary
An anvil can combine two Elytra to restore durability. This consumes the second pair, so it is a practical use for a spare wing rather than a first choice when phantom membranes are available. Keep the spare protected until you are sure the combination is worth giving up.

Use Unbreaking to stretch the interval
Unbreaking is a useful durability enchantment because it reduces how quickly the Elytra’s durability is consumed. It is an efficiency improvement, not a replacement for a repair plan; continue checking the bar before long flights.
Inspect before every long route
- Land and check the durability bar before leaving a familiar area.
- Repair before entering a flight where an emergency landing would be difficult.
- Carry a repair method or a spare Elytra on extended expeditions.
- Do not start a boost simply because the wings still appear to function; leave a margin for landing.
Safety checklist for End-City and Overworld flights
- Clear the launch area: Remove nearby walls, roofs, and protruding blocks from the first seconds of the route.
- Begin over land or water: A short practice glide gives you a recovery surface instead of immediate void exposure.
- Carry spare rockets, blocks, food, and an ender pearl: Each covers a different failure mode.
- Keep distance from shulkers: Levitation beside an exposed edge can send you out of the city and into the void.
- Watch the durability bar: Repair before a long trip, not after the wings become unreliable.
- Boost away from terrain: Point into open air before using a rocket, especially near towers and cave ceilings.
- Practice braking: Pitch upward gradually to lose speed; do not make a sharp turn directly into a landing wall.
- Plan the return: Mark gateways, bases, and landing platforms so the first flight does not become a search for home.
Systematic search, mapping, and commands: which route fits your rules?

Choose the method before you begin. If your goal is a survival milestone, the systematic route keeps the accomplishment tied to in-game exploration. If you are recovering a lost Elytra in a testing world or have explicitly allowed tools, a locator can save time. Do not assume that a command or map made for one edition will identify structures correctly in another.
A practice plan that builds reliable flight skills
Drill 1: activation
Stand on a broad platform over land or water, step off, and press Jump while falling. Repeat until the timing is automatic. If the wings fail to open, stop and correct the chest-slot or control-setting problem rather than moving to a higher launch.
Drill 2: gentle turns
Glide in a wide loop using small camera and movement adjustments. Keep the loop away from walls so you can observe how quickly the direction changes. The objective is control, not distance.

Drill 3: braking and landing
Approach a large, visible landing area and pitch upward gradually. Practice arriving with enough room to correct without turning into the surface. Repeat from both sides of the target so you do not depend on one approach angle.
Drill 4: one controlled boost
After a stable glide, use one ordinary rocket over open space. Observe how the boost changes your height and forward path, then land. Add more boosts only after a single boost feels predictable.
Drill 5: route management
Fly between two marked platforms while carrying only the supplies you intend to use on real journeys. Check the durability bar before departure, reserve rockets for the longest gap, and finish with enough room to land. This turns equipment checks into a habit rather than an emergency reaction.
Troubleshooting common Elytra problems
The wings will not activate
- Confirm that the Elytra is in the chest slot.
- Make sure you stepped into open air and are actually falling.
- Press the control currently mapped to Jump, not a remembered button from another platform.
- Move to a wider ledge and try again; a ceiling or wall can hide a successful activation by causing an immediate collision.
A rocket hurts you
Stop using that stack and inspect it. Firework rockets made with firework stars have an explosion that can damage the player. Replace them with ordinary rockets made without stars.

The city may not have generated with an End Ship. Mark it as searched and continue to another city on the outer islands. Searching every tower of a shipless city cannot produce the item.
You begin levitating near an edge
Move toward the city interior, place blocks between yourself and the opening, and wait until you can control your position. Keep a retreat route open around shulkers so one projectile does not carry you beyond the platform.
The wings are nearly depleted
Land before attempting another long crossing. Repair with phantom membranes in an anvil, use Mending while collecting experience, or combine the damaged Elytra with a spare pair in an anvil. Unbreaking can reduce future wear but does not restore lost durability.
You are running out of rockets
Stop boosting and switch to unboosted gliding over a safe landing area. Conserve the remaining rockets for a clear gap or a controlled climb, and return to a known platform before your supplies are exhausted.

Professional-looking Elytra flight is mostly disciplined preparation. A reliable pilot checks the chest slot and durability, launches into clear air, uses small steering corrections, boosts only when the path is open, and brakes before the landing surface fills the screen. In End Cities, the same discipline protects you from shulkers: fight from cover, preserve a retreat route, and never let a levitation hit turn into an uncontrolled edge launch.
Once the basic route is familiar, separate exploration decisions from flight decisions. Decide where you are going and where you will land before pressing Jump. Decide whether a rocket is necessary before activating it. That habit keeps the Elytra’s advantages—speed, scouting, and rapid returns—from becoming avoidable crashes.
