Choose Minecraft based on the device you own and the devices your friends use. Bedrock is the practical choice for playing across supported consoles, Windows PCs, and mobile devices. Java suits Windows, Mac, and Linux players who want community mods, custom servers, or access to older releases. If you’re buying for Windows PC, the Java & Bedrock bundle includes both editions—but check what your Microsoft account already owns before paying. Java and Bedrock players cannot normally join the same multiplayer session.
Java vs. Bedrock: the differences that affect your choice
Both editions are Minecraft, but they are separate versions with different platform reach and multiplayer networks. Minecraft’s official edition comparison and overview describe the distinctions below. Availability and details can vary by platform and may change, so check the store for the device you plan to use.

Choose Bedrock for a mixed-device group
If some players use consoles or phones while others use Windows, Bedrock is generally the straightforward choice, provided each device is supported. Ask friends which edition they launch before buying: being able to access both editions on PC does not merge their multiplayer networks.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes

Choose Java for PC customization
Java is the better match if everyone in your group plays Java on Windows, Mac, or Linux and you value community mods, custom servers, or older game releases. Minecraft describes Java as its original PC-only version, known for extensive mod support and custom servers on its official download page. Treat third-party mods and server communities as independent sources and use appropriate care when downloading files or sharing account details.
What to buy on each platform
Windows PC
Minecraft’s official PC offer includes Java and Bedrock. Before making a new purchase, sign in to the Minecraft Launcher or Microsoft Store with the Microsoft account used for your original purchase. The Launcher shows Play or Install for an edition the account owns and Buy for one it does not. Follow the official ownership-check instructions if you’re unsure which editions are attached to your account. The PC bundle release date stated in that help article is June 7, 2022.

Mac or Linux
Minecraft’s edition guide lists Java for Mac and Linux. Do not assume the Windows PC bundle or Bedrock availability applies to those systems; check Minecraft’s current download page and platform information before purchasing.
Console or mobile
These platforms use Bedrock. Buy through the store for the specific device you will play on, and confirm the console generation and region are supported. If online multiplayer matters, check whether the console platform requires its own online-play subscription; this can be separate from the game purchase and from Minecraft’s hosting services.

Plan multiplayer, hosting, and family use separately
Keep the edition consistent across the group
Java players join Java sessions; Bedrock players join Bedrock sessions on supported devices. A PC player who has both editions must launch the same edition as the friends they want to join. Owning both is useful for switching between groups, not for bridging the editions.
Understand Realms and console subscriptions
Minecraft offers Realms for Java and Realms Plus for Bedrock, while custom server options also differ by edition. Console online play may require a subscription from the console platform. Check current Minecraft and platform terms for your region before budgeting: the official comparison guide was published in 2021, and service limits, prices, and requirements can change.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Consider controls and Marketplace content for families
Bedrock supports controller and touch input, and its Marketplace offers curated maps, skins, and mini-games purchased with Minecoins. That is a more curated route than Java’s open third-party customization, but it does not make every purchase or online interaction automatically suitable for every child. Minecraft’s Parents’ Guide is a starting point for account and family considerations. Parents should also review platform and Microsoft account controls, and take care when children access third-party Java content.

- Write down the device you will play on and check its current Minecraft store listing.
- Ask friends whether they use Java or Bedrock—not just whether they play on PC or console.
- Pick Java for a PC group prioritizing mods, custom servers, or older releases; pick Bedrock when cross-play across supported device types is the priority.
- On Windows, check the signed-in account’s existing ownership before buying the bundle or an edition.
- For console multiplayer, confirm any separate platform online-play subscription; for hosting, compare the current Java Realms and Bedrock Realms Plus terms.
Minecraft’s edition comparison, PC store comparison, and platform store pages are the best places to verify current availability and service details before purchase.
