Minecraft Dungeons II makes its loot chase more promising by replacing the first game’s discrete mission selection with a connected world and giving players more equipment slots to shape a build. It remains an action-RPG dungeon crawler set in the Minecraft universe—not the open-world sandbox Minecraft. The sequel launched on September 29, 2026, for Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
What is Minecraft Dungeons II?
It is an action-RPG adventure and sequel to Minecraft Dungeons. Mojang’s launch story sets up a threat of strange rifts, corrupted mobs and sculk spreading through the Overworld, with the Illager High Council—Prime Enchanter, Supreme Evoker and Grand Illusioner—at the center of the danger. You fight through this Minecraft-inspired world, find equipment and use artifacts and other gear to develop your character.

The distinction from Minecraft matters: this is a structured combat-and-loot adventure, not a sandbox where building and open-ended survival are the main activities. You do not need to finish the first game before starting; Mojang says newcomers can jump in, while returning players may notice references. Mojang’s launch announcement and its official FAQ describe the game and its release.
Does the connected world make exploration better?
The biggest structural change is moving away from selecting separate missions as the primary way to explore. In Xbox Wire’s June hands-on preview, the world is a contiguous, fixed map with dungeons dotted throughout it, and jumping is new. Design director Laura De Llorens described the shift in an official Xbox Podcast transcript: “The world is now interconnected, meaning that you can go from the beginning of the world to the end of the world, just walking.”

That makes exploration feel less like moving between isolated stages and more like travelling through a single adventure space, with dungeons providing focused combat destinations. The world is connected, but it is not the free-form, procedurally generated sandbox of Minecraft; this is still a fixed action-RPG setting. Are builds and loot more flexible?
The additional equipment capacity gives the loot chase a clearer build-crafting angle. In its hands-on preview, Xbox Wire reported these slots: a melee weapon, a ranged weapon, three artifact slots, four armor slots and three passive talisman slots. That is a preview-reported breakdown, rather than a universal claim about every version or a substitute for checking the current in-game interface.

More slots create more places for drops and equipment choices to affect a character, but quantity alone does not prove that every item is distinct or that every combination is equally useful. The practical test is whether players enjoy comparing finds and adjusting their setup as they progress. The independent review evidence points to a deeper game that remains approachable, while also reporting repetition; it does not provide a comprehensive item-by-item evaluation.
How does the campaign and endgame hold up?
GamesRadar+ reviewer Justin Towell reported completing the story in about 12 hours, including four hours in co-op, then playing endgame content for several days. Those are one reviewer’s playtime figures, not a promised campaign length. Towell’s assessment was that the sequel felt deeper while staying approachable, but repetition and endgame difficulty were drawbacks.

Towell reviewed publisher-provided code on Xbox Series X. He also encountered bugs including stuck movement and disappearing keys or characters; reloading fixed the cited problems. That is a single reviewer’s experience, not evidence of how often those issues occur across platforms or whether they remain in the current release. His review is at GamesRadar+.
Can you play solo or in co-op?
Mojang says the game supports solo play or parties of up to four. The FAQ confirms local couch co-op, online cross-play and mixed co-op, so players can combine local and online participation. Online multiplayer on consoles requires the relevant platform subscription, sold separately. Check the platform’s current subscription requirements before arranging an online session.

Which edition and returning-player rewards should you know about?
Deluxe Edition
Mojang’s FAQ lists the Deluxe Edition contents as the base game, Soul Cape, Blub pet, four Fancy Hero skins and DLC 1+2 when released. The DLC content is described as forthcoming in that listing; check the current store page for release status, regional price and any changes before buying.

The FAQ says eligible players can claim a Hero Cape by using the same Microsoft account associated with the first game. Its stated login deadline is December 31, 2026. It also says play through Game Pass or Steam may qualify if the same account was used, and notes regional restrictions. Confirm the current eligibility terms in the official FAQ before relying on the reward.

Verdict: a more connected, more configurable dungeon crawler
Minecraft Dungeons II has a more coherent adventure structure than a sequence of isolated mission selections, and its reported gear slots give loot more room to shape a build. That is a meaningful direction for a sequel, especially for players who want approachable action-RPG combat with solo and co-op options. The caveats are repetition, potentially demanding endgame content and bugs reported by one Xbox Series X reviewer. If a connected journey and tinkering with equipment are the appeal, this is a substantial evolution of the dungeon-crawling formula; if you want the creative freedom of Minecraft, this is a different kind of game.
