Minecraft Clay Guide: Where to Find Clay and What to Craft

Find clay in rivers, lakes, swamps and shallow oceans, then choose the right processing path: clay balls for bricks or intact blocks for plain terracotta.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clay generates as gray-blue blocks in or beside water. Search riverbeds, lake edges, swamps, and shallow ocean floors, then mine the patches with a shovel. A normal break gives four clay balls; a tool with Silk Touch preserves the clay block.

Your next step depends on the item you want. Smelt clay balls to make brick items, combine four brick items into a brick block, or smelt an intact clay block to make plain terracotta. Badlands supply naturally generated colored terracotta, and some village houses contain uncolored terracotta. Mud-conversion and villager-related systems can provide alternative supplies, but exact behavior depends on your Minecraft edition and version.

Clay at a glance

Goal What to mine or obtain Processing route Result
Clay balls Ordinary clay block Break the block without Silk Touch Four clay balls per block
Preserve a clay block Clay block Mine with Silk Touch One intact clay block
Brick items Clay balls Smelt each ball in a furnace One brick item per clay ball
Brick block Brick items Craft four brick items together One block of bricks
Plain terracotta Intact clay block Smelt the block in a furnace Terracotta
Colored terracotta Natural deposits Mine in a badlands biome Colored terracotta without smelting ordinary clay

The four-clay-ball yield is the key planning number. One mined block can therefore become four brick items and then one brick block, while Silk Touch lets you retain the original block for a later terracotta decision.

Where to find clay in Minecraft

Search the right water environments

Look for clay in rivers, lakes, swamps, and shallow ocean floors. Patches may sit directly on the bottom, at the shoreline, or immediately beside the water. The blocks have a gray-blue appearance that contrasts with ordinary dirt, sand, and gravel. Because clay can be partly covered or mixed into a riverbed, scan the floor from several angles rather than checking only the exposed shoreline.

  • Swamps: Search shallow, murky water and the edges between land and water.
  • Shallow oceans: Look across the seabed where you can keep a clear view and reach the blocks safely.

There is no need to begin in a badlands biome when your immediate goal is ordinary clay. Badlands are especially useful when you want terracotta already colored by natural generation.

Bring a shovel and plan for visibility

A shovel is the practical tool for mining clay quickly. Carry spare tools if you intend to clear a large patch, and bring a way to see the bottom when water makes the gray-blue blocks difficult to distinguish. Work from shallow water whenever possible: it gives you a clear line of sight and reduces the chance of losing mined items in a current.

Do not assume every gray block near water is clay. Confirm the block’s blue-gray color before committing to a long dig, particularly in riverbeds where gravel and dirt are common.

How to mine clay blocks and get clay balls

For the normal four-ball drop

  1. Find a clay patch in a river, lake, swamp, or shallow ocean.
  2. Equip an ordinary shovel or another tool that can break the block efficiently.
  3. Break each clay block without Silk Touch.
  4. Collect the four clay balls that normally drop from each block.
  5. Move the balls into your inventory before clearing the next section, especially underwater or near flowing water.

This is the correct route when you need the raw material for bricks. It also gives you a predictable conversion: every clay block you break supplies four balls.

For an intact clay block

  1. Use a tool enchanted with Silk Touch.
  2. Break the clay block while Silk Touch is active.
  3. Collect the block itself instead of clay balls.
  4. Store it for later smelting into terracotta or for recombining decisions.

Silk Touch is useful when you have not decided between bricks and terracotta, or when you specifically want to transport and process blocks later. Without Silk Touch, breaking the block commits you to the four-ball form.

Decide between the brick path and the terracotta path

Clay has two different furnace routes. Smelting clay balls makes brick items; smelting an intact clay block makes plain terracotta. Putting the wrong form into the furnace is the most common way to get an unexpected material.

If you need Start with Furnace input After smelting or crafting
Brick items for building or recipes Clay balls One clay ball per furnace operation One brick item per ball
A brick block Four brick items No additional smelting required Craft four brick items into one brick block
Plain terracotta Intact clay block The whole clay block Terracotta
Colored terracotta Natural terracotta deposit Usually no clay-ball processing is needed Mine colored terracotta in badlands

How to make bricks from clay

Smelt clay balls into brick items

  1. Break clay blocks normally so they drop clay balls.
  2. Open a furnace and place clay balls in the input slot.
  3. Place fuel in the furnace fuel slot.
  4. Collect the brick item produced for each clay ball.
  5. Repeat until you have the number of bricks needed for your build or recipe.

The documented conversion is one clay ball to one brick item. The furnace consumes fuel during processing, so a large project is easier if you gather the full clay-ball quantity before starting repeated smelting.

Craft a brick block

Arrange four brick items in the crafting grid to produce one block of bricks. This is a crafting step, not another furnace step. Keep some brick items aside if you plan to make flower pots, because brick items are also used in flower-pot crafting. Turning every brick into a building block first can leave you short of the individual items needed for that recipe.

Plan a complete brick project

For every brick block you want, begin with four clay blocks if you are mining normally: four blocks produce 16 clay balls, those balls smelt into 16 brick items, and four groups of four brick items craft into four brick blocks. If you mine with Silk Touch, you must break the preserved blocks later to enter the brick route; intact blocks are the input for terracotta instead.

How to make plain terracotta

Smelt an intact clay block

  1. Obtain a clay block intact, normally by using Silk Touch when mining.
  2. Open a furnace and place the clay block in its input slot.
  3. Add fuel.
  4. Collect the terracotta when smelting finishes.

This route is different from the brick route. Smelting clay balls does not produce plain terracotta; it produces brick items. If terracotta is the target, preserve the block rather than breaking it into balls.

  • ACCESSORIES FOR PRETEND PLAY – Features torches, hay, a smoker stove, 2 eggs, 2 lots of seeds, a chicken leg, feather and an axe

When to choose this route

  • Choose it when you need the plain, uncolored terracotta base for a build.
  • Choose it when you already have Silk Touch and want to postpone the final material decision.
  • Choose it when travel to a badlands biome is less convenient than processing clay near your base.

How to get colored terracotta

Mine natural deposits in badlands

Badlands are the recommended natural source of colored terracotta. The official Minecraft article describes the biome as a rich, natural source of materials and tells players who want to mine there to bring a pickaxe. This route avoids turning ordinary clay into balls and then processing it in a furnace: the colored material is generated in the landscape and can be mined directly.

Travel distance and biome access are the main trade-offs. If your base is far from badlands, carrying fuel and using a Silk Touch clay supply may be more practical for a plain-teracotta project, while a badlands trip is valuable when you need several naturally colored varieties.

Check village structures for uncolored terracotta

Some village houses can contain uncolored terracotta. These structures offer a second source when you encounter the right village, but they are not a universal replacement for searching water or visiting badlands. Treat village generation as an opportunity rather than a guaranteed quantity.

Do not confuse plain and colored terracotta routes

Smelting an intact clay block gives plain terracotta. Naturally generated badlands deposits provide colored terracotta without that smelting step. Decide whether you need a specific color before choosing a route; processing ordinary clay cannot substitute for every naturally generated color in your building plan.

Alternative and renewable clay supplies

Besides mining water-bottom deposits, documented Minecraft mechanics include renewable clay systems involving mud conversion and villager-related acquisition. These systems are edition- and version-sensitive. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition can change how a block conversion, trade, or related interaction behaves, and updates can alter the requirements.

Use the following decision rule:

  • Need clay immediately: search a nearby river, lake, swamp, or shallow ocean and mine a patch.
  • Need a repeatable source at a long-term base: investigate the mud-conversion and villager-related mechanics available in your exact edition and version before building a farm or trading setup.
  • Need terracotta rather than raw clay: compare the travel cost of a badlands trip with the fuel and Silk Touch requirements for processing clay at home.

Do not copy a farm design or trade expectation from another edition without checking its block names, required tools, and current behavior. The broad existence of these alternative routes is established, but exact implementation details are not identical across all releases.

Method comparison: output, tools, fuel, and repeatability

Practical quantity planning

Calculating from ordinary mining

Use four clay balls per clay block as your base calculation. A target of 20 clay balls requires five clay blocks. A target of 40 balls requires 10 blocks. If you are making brick blocks, divide your brick-item target by four: one brick block consumes four brick items, and each of those came from one clay ball.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, a four-block brick project needs 16 brick items. That means 16 clay balls, which means four ordinary clay blocks before smelting. Gather a small surplus if you also need brick items for flower pots.

Separating stock for different projects

Keep intact Silk Touch blocks in a separate chest from clay balls. Label the storage by intended output—“terracotta,” “brick smelting,” and “flower-pot bricks,” for example—so a later crafting session does not accidentally consume blocks reserved for another material. This is especially useful when a single mining trip supplies both a colored-build project and a brick-building project.

Troubleshooting common clay problems

“I found water but no clay.”

Move along the shoreline and inspect several depths. Clay is practical to find in rivers, lakes, swamps, and shallow ocean floors, but one short section of shore may contain only dirt, gravel, or sand. Search a broader stretch before abandoning the biome.

“My clay block turned into balls.”

That is the normal result when the block is broken without Silk Touch. Four clay balls per block is expected. Use Silk Touch on future mining trips if preserving the block matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The furnace made bricks, not terracotta.”

You inserted clay balls. Clay balls smelt into brick items. Plain terracotta requires an intact clay block as the furnace input.

“I cannot make a brick block from my clay.”

Clay balls are not the direct input for a brick block. Smelt them into brick items first, then craft four brick items together.

“I need colored terracotta but only have plain clay.”

Look for a badlands biome or check whether a village structure contains uncolored terracotta. Smelting ordinary clay produces plain terracotta, not a substitute for every naturally colored deposit.

“A farm or trade guide does not work in my world.”

Verify your edition—Java or Bedrock—and your exact game version. Mud-conversion and villager-related clay mechanics are not safe to assume identical across releases.

Edition and version checks before committing to a large project

The basic clay-ball yield and the brick-versus-terracotta decision are stable planning concepts in the documented guide, but alternative acquisition methods are explicitly version-sensitive. Before investing in a renewable setup, confirm the current mechanic for your edition. Also check whether a tutorial expects Silk Touch, a particular villager state, a specific block conversion, or a feature that was added after your world version.

For a simple one-time build, direct mining avoids most compatibility questions: find a water biome, mine with the appropriate tool, and process the resulting form. For a long-term supply, test the complete route in a copy of the world before spending rare resources on a permanent installation.

What to remember

  • Search rivers, lakes, swamps, and shallow ocean floors for gray-blue clay blocks.
  • Use a shovel for faster ordinary mining.
  • Breaking normally gives four clay balls; Silk Touch preserves the block.
  • Smelt clay balls for brick items, then craft four brick items into one brick block.
  • Smelt an intact clay block for plain terracotta.
  • Mine badlands for naturally colored terracotta and check some village houses for uncolored terracotta.
  • Treat mud-conversion and villager-related supplies as edition- and version-dependent.

The official Minecraft editorial article summed up the two material choices plainly: players can head to the badlands for a natural source, or “smelt some clay” when they prefer the older processing route. Choosing the correct form before mining—balls for bricks, intact blocks for plain terracotta—keeps the rest of the project predictable.
