Minecraft Cauldron Guide: How to Craft, Fill, Empty, Use Water, Lava, Potions and Dye

Minecraft cauldrons use seven iron ingots and can hold water, lava, powder snow and—on Bedrock—potions and dyed water. Follow the exact filling, dyeing, washing and tipped-arrow steps, with Java-versus-Bedrock limits clearly marked.

A Minecraft cauldron is a container and utility block made with seven iron ingots in a U shape. It can hold water, lava, potions and powder snow; in Bedrock Edition it can also hold dyed water and potion liquid for making tipped arrows. Fill it by using a bucket or, for Bedrock potion storage, a glass bottle. Use an empty bucket to remove a cauldron’s contents.

This guide explains the crafting recipe, natural generation, every documented content type, the Bedrock-only dyeing and tipped-arrow workflows, and the edition limits that matter when you move between Java and Bedrock.

What a cauldron does

Mojang describes the cauldron as a block that “hold[s] liquids of different kinds – water, lava, potions, and even powder snow.” It is useful for storing a liquid at a base, preparing certain Bedrock Edition items, and serving as the job-site block for a leatherworker villager.

A cauldron is not a general-purpose tank. Its behavior depends on the substance and on the edition of Minecraft you are playing. Ordinary water, lava and powder snow are the core storage uses. Dyed water and potion operations are documented specifically for Bedrock Edition, so do not assume that a Java world will provide the same interactions.

How to make a cauldron

Crafting recipe

Use a crafting bench and place seven iron ingots in a U shape: three ingots across the left column, three across the right column, and one across the bottom row. Leave the top-middle and the two middle-side positions empty. The result is one cauldron.

  1. Open a crafting bench.
  2. Place iron ingots in the top-left, middle-left, bottom-left, bottom-middle, bottom-right, middle-right and top-right slots.
  3. Take the cauldron from the result slot.
  4. Place it where you need a container, dyeing station or leatherworker job-site block.

The recipe is a fixed seven-ingot cost. The source does not identify a different recipe by edition, so the same U-shaped arrangement is the documented crafting method for this guide.

Finding one instead of crafting

Cauldrons can also generate naturally. The named locations are swamp huts, igloos, village tanneries, trail ruins and woodland mansions. Searching these structures can save iron, but it is less predictable than crafting because you must locate and reach a generated structure first.

How to fill and empty a cauldron

Filling with a bucket

  1. Place the empty cauldron.
  2. Hold a bucket containing the liquid you want to store.
  3. Aim at the cauldron and use the bucket action for your platform.
  4. The cauldron receives the bucket’s water, lava or other supported liquid.

The same interaction is used for the desired liquid: select the filled bucket first, then use it on the cauldron. Keep the remaining bucket in mind when planning a trip, because the bucket is the tool that transfers the liquid.

Emptying with an empty bucket

  1. Hold an empty bucket.
  2. Aim at the filled cauldron.
  3. Use the bucket action.
  4. The bucket takes the cauldron’s contents, leaving the cauldron empty.

Mojang’s article explicitly notes that milk does not fill a cauldron. A milk bucket therefore cannot be used as a cauldron storage option under the documented behavior.

Bedrock potion transfer

Bedrock Edition adds a bottle-based potion interaction. The cauldron can be filled with potions from glass bottles, rather than relying only on a bucket. The exact potion effect remains the effect associated with the potion you put into the cauldron.

Cauldron contents at a glance

Content How the guide documents adding it How to remove or use it Edition qualification
Water Use a water bucket on the cauldron. Use an empty bucket; in Bedrock, use dyed water for armor coloring when applicable. Core cauldron use.
Lava Use a lava bucket on the cauldron. Use an empty bucket to collect it. Core cauldron use.
Powder snow The official description identifies powder snow as a cauldron-held substance. The supplied documentation does not specify a separate transfer procedure beyond the general cauldron rules. Core content named by Mojang.
Potion liquid Use glass bottles in Bedrock Edition. Use the stored potion for the Bedrock tipped-arrow operation; the supplied documentation does not give a separate bottle-removal sequence. Bedrock behavior is explicitly documented; Java parity is not established here.
Dyed water Apply dye to a cauldron filled with regular water. Use it to color leather armor, leather horse armor or wolf armor; undyed water washes that color out. Bedrock Edition only in the cited documentation.
Milk It does not fill a cauldron. There is no cauldron storage workflow for milk. Explicit exception in Mojang’s article.

Using water in a cauldron

Water is the straightforward cauldron workflow: obtain a water bucket, use it on the empty cauldron, and collect the water again with an empty bucket when you need to move it. This makes a cauldron a convenient fixed water point at a base, workshop or village project without requiring you to leave a source block exposed where it could interfere with building.

For ordinary storage, the operation is deliberately simple: one filled bucket transfers its liquid into the cauldron, and one empty bucket takes the contents back out. If a bucket does not transfer what you expect, check that it actually contains water and that you are targeting the cauldron rather than an adjacent block.

How to dye leather armor with a cauldron

The dyed-water workflow is documented for Bedrock Edition. It applies to leather armor, leather horse armor and wolf armor. Java Edition players should not treat this section as a confirmed Java feature because the cited Mojang material labels it specifically as Bedrock behavior.

Prepare the dyed water

  1. Place a cauldron.
  2. Fill it with regular water using a water bucket.
  3. Hold the dye color you want.
  4. Use the dye on the water-filled cauldron. The water becomes dyed water.

Color supported leather gear

  1. Hold the leather armor, leather horse armor or wolf armor you want to color.
  2. Use that item on the cauldron containing the dyed water.
  3. The gear takes the color of the cauldron’s water.
  4. Repeat with additional supported items as needed, following the normal Bedrock interaction for your platform.

The important distinction is that the cauldron’s dyed water supplies the color; the gear is not colored by a dry cauldron or by an arbitrary liquid. This route covers the three item categories named by Mojang: leather armor, leather horse armor and wolf armor.

Wash the color out

  1. Use a cauldron of undyed, regular water.
  2. Use the dyed leather armor, leather horse armor or wolf armor on that cauldron.
  3. The undyed water washes the color clean from the item.

Keep two cauldrons if you work with several colors: one can remain dyed for a project while the other holds undyed water for cleaning. If you only have one, empty or replace its contents before switching between coloring and washing.

Potions in cauldrons and tipped arrows

Bedrock Edition cauldrons can be filled with potions from glass bottles. This gives you a stored potion liquid rather than leaving every bottle in your inventory. The cited material also documents a combat-oriented use: a stack of arrows placed on a potion-filled cauldron becomes tipped arrows carrying that potion effect.

Store a potion in Bedrock Edition

  1. Place an empty cauldron.
  2. Hold a glass bottle containing the potion you want to store.
  3. Use the bottle on the cauldron.
  4. Continue with the Bedrock interaction until the potion liquid is stored as described by the game.

Convert arrows

  1. Confirm that the cauldron contains the potion effect you want.
  2. Hold a stack of arrows.
  3. Use the arrows on the potion-filled cauldron.
  4. The arrows convert to tipped arrows carrying that potion effect.

The source describes conversion of a stack of arrows, not an unlimited supply or a Java Edition equivalent. Plan this station around the arrows and potion effect you actually intend to use, and keep the Bedrock label visible when documenting or sharing the design with other players.

Powder snow storage

Mojang’s cauldron description includes powder snow among the substances a cauldron can hold. That makes the block useful when your build or expedition needs a contained powder-snow location rather than an open patch. The supplied material does not specify an additional powder-snow recipe, fill animation or extraction sequence, so use the edition’s normal powder-snow interaction and do not infer a special potion- or dye-like transformation from this fact alone.

Leatherworker job-site use

A cauldron also acts as the job-site block for leatherworker villagers. If you are arranging a village trading area, its presence can serve a villager-workstation purpose in addition to holding a liquid. Separate the workstation plan from the dyeing plan: the cauldron’s role as a leatherworker job-site block does not by itself imply that every edition supports Bedrock’s dyed-water interactions.

Java and Bedrock: what to assume

Edition labeling matters most for dyed water and potion workflows. The official material identifies dyed water and potion-filled cauldrons in Bedrock Edition, while the supplied documentation does not provide a complete Java-versus-Bedrock parity table.

Feature Bedrock Edition status in the cited material Java Edition guidance
Crafting with seven iron ingots Documented. No different recipe is identified in the material.
Water, lava and powder snow Documented cauldron contents. The material names these as cauldron-held substances but does not provide a full edition matrix.
Dyed water Documented; dye regular water, then color or wash supported leather gear. Do not assume support; the cited behavior is explicitly labeled Bedrock.
Potion storage from glass bottles Documented. Parity is not established by the supplied material.
Tipped-arrow conversion A stack of arrows on a potion-filled cauldron becomes tipped arrows with that effect. Parity is not established by the supplied material.
Leatherworker job-site block Documented by Mojang’s cauldron description. The description does not attach a separate edition restriction.

When a tutorial, server or add-on uses a different release, verify the behavior in that edition before building a large automated or decorative setup. The cited publication is Minecraft / Mojang Studios’ Block of the Month: Cauldron article, dated 25 November 2024, written by Duncan Geere; its Bedrock labels should be retained rather than silently generalized.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Trying to use milk: Milk does not fill a cauldron. Bring the intended liquid in the correct bucket instead.
  • Using an empty bucket to fill: An empty bucket cannot provide a liquid. Fill the bucket first, then use it on the cauldron.
  • Expecting dye to color armor directly: In the documented Bedrock workflow, dye first changes regular water in the cauldron. Use the resulting dyed water on supported leather gear.
  • Attempting the dye workflow in Java: The cited behavior is labeled Bedrock Edition. Do not treat an unsuccessful Java interaction as a broken cauldron.
  • Trying to make tipped arrows from an ordinary water cauldron: The arrow conversion requires a potion-filled cauldron in Bedrock Edition.
  • Using unsupported gear for the dye process: Mojang names leather armor, leather horse armor and wolf armor. The documented workflow does not establish dyeing for other armor materials.
  • Assuming all potion behavior is identical across editions: The supplied material documents Bedrock potion storage and arrow conversion but does not establish complete Java parity.
  • Searching only one structure: Cauldrons can generate in swamp huts, igloos, village tanneries, trail ruins and woodland mansions. If one route fails, use another location or craft the block.

Choosing the right cauldron workflow

Your goal Recommended setup Key condition
Keep a portable liquid point at a base Craft a cauldron and fill it with a bucket of water or lava. Use an empty bucket when you need to move the contents.
Color leather gear Use a Bedrock cauldron of dyed water. Only the three named leather gear categories are documented.
Restore the original gear color state Use a Bedrock cauldron of undyed water. Apply the dyed item to the undyed water.
Prepare effect-bearing arrows Fill a Bedrock cauldron with the chosen potion, then use a stack of arrows on it. The resulting arrows carry that potion effect.
Provide a villager workstation Place the cauldron as a leatherworker job-site block. Its workstation role is separate from liquid storage.
Acquire one without spending iron Search the named generated structures. Structure availability and travel time are less predictable than crafting.

A compact checklist

  • Have seven iron ingots and a crafting bench if you are making the block.
  • For liquid transfer, carry a bucket containing the desired liquid and an empty bucket for removal.
  • Do not bring milk expecting it to fill the cauldron.
  • Mark Bedrock-only instructions whenever you describe dyed water, potion storage or tipped-arrow conversion.
  • For dyeing, prepare regular water first, apply dye to the cauldron, then use the dyed water on leather armor, leather horse armor or wolf armor.
  • For cleaning, use the dyed item on a cauldron of undyed water.
  • For tipped arrows, use a stack of arrows on a Bedrock potion-filled cauldron.
  • If you are exploring rather than crafting, check swamp huts, igloos, village tanneries, trail ruins and woodland mansions.
