To tame a Minecraft cat, find a stray in a village (or the black cat at a swamp hut), hold raw cod or raw salmon, approach slowly, and feed it until hearts appear and a collar is visible. Two tamed cats can be bred with raw fish. Tamed cats can be told to sit, discourage creepers and phantoms, occasionally bring a morning gift, and wear dyed collars.

What Minecraft cats are and why they matter
Cats are tameable companion mobs. They are primarily defensive utility animals rather than combat pets: their presence can make creepers and phantoms keep away, while sitting lets you park them at a chosen location. A sleeping tamed cat may leave a morning gift, and its collar can be dyed so you can identify it in a group.
Minecraft added cats in version 1.2.1 in March 2012, according to Minecraft.net. The current cat system is separate from ocelots. A stray cat can become a normal tamed cat, but feeding an ocelot does not turn it into a cat.

Where to find stray cats
Villages
Villages are the practical source for most cats. Walk through populated villages and watch around houses, paths and farms for stray cats. Keep raw cod or raw salmon ready before you get close; the fish is needed to tame the animal once you find it.
Village cat spawning is tied to village activity rather than to a simple world-wide timer. The husbandry guidance used for this guide describes a threshold of five villagers and five beds and a village limit of five cats for the edition it covers. Java and Bedrock implement village mechanics differently, so those figures should not be treated as one universal formula. If a village appears to have stopped producing cats, count its villagers and claimed beds, and remember that existing cats may already have reached the relevant cap for your edition.

Swamp huts
A swamp hut generates with one black cat. That makes a hut the most dependable destination when you specifically want the black variant. Black cats can also appear under a full moon, so a night search in suitable village areas can provide another opportunity to find one.

The hut cat is still a stray when you meet it. The structure supplies the location and variant; you still need to tame the cat with raw fish.
Choosing a search strategy

How to tame a cat
Minecraft.net’s 2023 article by Duncan Geere describes the essential method: “To tame a stray cat, you’ll need to slowly approach it while holding something tasty – raw cod or salmon usually does the trick.” The cat’s movement makes patience more important than speed.
- Get raw fish. Put raw cod or raw salmon in an active hotbar slot so the cat can see that you are holding a valid food item.
- Find a stray. Approach a village cat or the black cat at a swamp hut. Do not rush directly at it.
- Approach slowly. Move in small steps while continuing to hold the raw fish. If the cat starts retreating, stop and allow it to settle before closing the distance again.
- Feed the cat. Use the interact control with the fish. Continue offering raw cod or raw salmon as long as the cat remains untamed.
- Look for the taming result. Feeding is complete when hearts appear and a collar becomes visible. At that point the stray is your tamed cat.
- Secure the new pet. Move it away from hazards and use the sit command if you want it to remain parked while you build or travel.
Why a cat keeps running away
- You moved too quickly. Back away, keep the fish selected and try a slower approach.
- The fish is not raw cod or raw salmon. Switch to one of those items before trying again.
- You are chasing instead of waiting. A cat that is continually fleeing is difficult to feed; pause and let it come within interaction range.
- You have mistaken an ocelot for a stray cat. Ocelots follow a different trust mechanic and cannot be converted into tameable cats in the current system.
What the collar confirms
The visible collar is the clearest confirmation that taming succeeded. Hearts during feeding are a progress signal; the collar is the persistent ownership result. Once collared, the cat responds to sitting and standing commands and can participate in breeding with another tamed cat.

How to breed cats
Breeding requires two tamed cats and raw fish. Microsoft’s Bedrock stable behavior reference includes cat breeding with require_tame: true, confirming that untamed strays are not valid breeding parents in vanilla Bedrock behavior.
Breeding procedure
- Tame two cats. Each parent must have a collar. Two wild strays, or an ocelot and a cat, cannot substitute for the required pair.
- Bring them together. Use a secure pen or room so neither cat wanders away while you prepare the fish.
- Make both cats available. If either cat is sitting, use the interact control to make it stand. The mechanics guidance documents restrictions involving sitting cats, so standing is the reliable setup when breeding hearts do not begin.
- Feed both parents. Use raw cod or raw salmon on each tamed cat. When the breeding conditions are met, hearts appear and a kitten is produced.
- Keep the kitten safe. Protect the new cat from environmental hazards and leave room for the parents to move when you want to breed again.
Which variant will the kitten have?
A kitten’s appearance can follow one of its parents or another variant according to the game’s breeding rules. You do not need to calculate exact probabilities for ordinary breeding: keep breeding a healthy pair and compare each kitten with the variants you already own. Breeding is therefore useful both for expanding a safe home population and for working toward a complete collection.
Breeding failures and fixes

A practical completion plan
- Start a checklist. Record each of the 11 names instead of relying on memory; similar-looking cats are easy to confuse.
- Visit more than one village. Village spawning is affected by villagers, beds and the local cat population, and one village may not provide every appearance you need.
- Secure the black variant early. A swamp hut gives you a clearly identified route to black, while a full-moon search is an additional option.
- Tame every useful parent. Once a cat has a collar, move it to a protected breeding area and keep it available for future pairings.
- Breed deliberately. Compare each kitten with your checklist and park valuable variants so they do not wander into hazards.
For an advancement-oriented collection, count a variant only after you have tamed and secured it. A wild cat that disappears or is lost in terrain does not help you maintain a reliable collection.

Creeper deterrence
Tamed cats can scare creepers away. Positioning matters: the cat must be close enough to influence the creeper’s pathing. A cat sitting safely inside a sealed room cannot necessarily protect a distant field, mine entrance or perimeter.
Phantom deterrence
Phantoms also fear cats. Placing tamed cats around an outdoor base can make the area less attractive to phantoms, but deterrence is not a substitute for general safety. Keep the cats where they can influence the space you actually use, and do not assume one cat protects an entire settlement.

Sitting and parking
You can make a tamed cat sit or stand. Sitting is useful when you want a cat to remain beside a doorway, storage area or display pen instead of following you. Make it stand again before moving it or attempting to breed, because sitting restrictions can interfere with breeding behavior.

A sleeping tamed cat may leave a morning gift. This is an occasional behavior, not a guaranteed daily reward, so treat it as a bonus rather than a production system.
Dyed collars
Mojang’s Village & Pillage notes record that collars can be dyed. Different collar colors make a multi-cat base easier to organize, especially when you are maintaining breeding pairs or tracking variants.
Limits and safety precautions
- Cats are not attack commands. They do not attack hostile mobs for the player, so their value is deterrence and companionship rather than direct damage.
- Deterrence depends on pathing. A cat only influences mobs that can detect and route around it. Distance, walls and terrain can leave a creeper or phantom unaffected.
- Ordinary hazards still apply. Cats remain vulnerable to environmental dangers. Protect them from places where falls, fire, hostile encounters or other hazards can kill them.
- Sitting trades mobility for control. A sitting cat is easier to keep in one place, but it cannot help elsewhere until you make it stand.
- A village cap can limit searching. If the local population is full under your edition’s rules, looking harder in the same village may not create another cat. Search another village or use breeding instead.
Cats versus ocelots
The two animals are related in Minecraft’s history but have different mechanics now. Mojang’s 2019 Village & Pillage notes state: “Stray cats can be tamed,” while separately explaining, “Ocelots can’t be tamed, but might start trusting you if you feed them with fish.”

If your goal is a collared companion, a breeding pair or a complete variant collection, leave the ocelot alone and continue searching for stray cats in villages or at a swamp hut.
