Choose a Bedrock Realm if you want a private world that is online without running a computer or learning server administration. Choose the official Bedrock Dedicated Server if you are comfortable downloading software, configuring a Windows or Ubuntu machine, and keeping the computer and network available. A Realm charges a recurring subscription; the server software is free, but self-hosting still has hardware, electricity, internet, and maintenance costs that are not calculated by Minecraft.
Before deciding, confirm that everyone uses Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. Realms cross-play works between Bedrock devices, not between Bedrock and Java Edition.

The short answer
For most small groups, a Realm is the practical choice. Minecraft manages the hosting, the world remains available when the owner is offline, and setup is designed for people without server-administration experience. The trade-off is a recurring fee and fixed simultaneous-player tiers.
A Bedrock Dedicated Server is the better fit when you want control over the machine and files, are willing to handle configuration, or need a self-hosted arrangement that is not tied to a Realm subscription. It is not automatically cheaper: the download has no software charge, but you supply the computer, storage, broadband connection, electricity, updates, backups, and troubleshooting time.

What you are comparing
Bedrock Realms
A Realm is Minecraft’s hosted, private multiplayer service. The owner creates or subscribes to the Realm through Minecraft, invites other players, and Minecraft keeps the service online. Invited friends can join even when the owner is not playing. The owner does not need to leave a home computer running.
Bedrock Dedicated Server
The Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) is Minecraft’s official software for hosting a Bedrock multiplayer world on compatible Windows or Ubuntu hardware. You download the package, extract it, launch the server, and adjust its configuration files. The machine and its network connection become part of the service, so availability depends on that equipment being powered, reachable, and correctly configured.

Realm versus dedicated server at a glance
| Decision factor | Bedrock Realm / Realms Plus | Bedrock Dedicated Server |
|---|---|---|
| Who operates it | Minecraft operates the hosted service. The setup is intended to require no technical knowledge. | You operate the software, computer, storage, network, updates, and local files. |
| Software price | US prices listed by Minecraft are $3.99 USD per recurring month for the owner plus two other simultaneous players, or $7.99 USD per recurring month for the owner plus ten simultaneous players. Regional and storefront prices can differ. | The official download is free. Minecraft does not calculate your hardware, electricity, broadband, or maintenance costs. |
| Simultaneous players | Standard plan: owner plus two. Realms Plus: owner plus ten. You may invite more people than can play at one time. | The cited official download page does not state a player limit that can be compared directly with the Realm tiers. |
| Availability | Always-online hosted service; invited members can play while the owner is away. | Available only while the host computer and network are running and reachable. |
| Supported clients | Bedrock devices can play together within the same edition. | Minecraft lists Bedrock clients on Windows PC, Xbox, PlayStation, mobile devices, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Players connect with the server’s IP address and port. |
| World features | Both listed Bedrock plans include backups and three world slots, with one active world. Realms Plus also includes the rotating Marketplace Pass catalog. | World files are generated and stored on your host. The cited page does not promise managed cloud backups or a post-expiry retention window. |
| Console online access | Console multiplayer may require the platform’s separate online-network subscription. | The cited material does not establish a different console-subscription rule; check the current requirement for each console platform. |
Costs, billing, and capacity
The prices in the table are the current US-dollar figures shown on Minecraft’s Realms page, not universal prices. They are recurring monthly rates and can vary by country, currency, platform storefront, taxes, or later product changes. A qualifying Realm trial lasts 30 days, and the subscription renews automatically unless it is canceled.
Standard Bedrock Realms is sized for a very small group. Realms Plus costs more because it raises the simultaneous-player allowance and adds access to the rotating Marketplace Pass catalog. The allowance counts players who can be in the world at the same time; it is not a limit on the number of people you can invite over the life of the Realm.
Self-hosting has a different cost profile. The server package itself is free, but a realistic budget should account for a suitable computer, storage, electricity, broadband, operating-system maintenance, backups, and the time required to diagnose connection or configuration problems. No figure in the official download material proves that these expenses will be lower than a Realm subscription.

Confirm the edition before you pay or configure anything
Realms cross-play is edition-specific. Minecraft’s official FAQ states that Realms is cross-platform only within the same game edition. Therefore, Bedrock players on phones, consoles, Switch devices, and Windows PCs can share a Bedrock Realm, while a Java Edition player cannot join that Realm through the same service.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe same check applies to a dedicated server: the Bedrock Dedicated Server accepts Bedrock clients. When a Bedrock Realm is the better choice
You want the least technical setup
The hosted model removes the need to download server software, open a server process, maintain a host computer, or keep a home connection available. The owner follows Minecraft’s purchase and setup flow, creates the world, and invites players.
Your group plays at different times
A Realm remains available when its owner is offline. That matters for families or friends whose schedules rarely overlap: an invited player can enter without asking the owner to start a computer first.
You value managed backups and simple world slots
Minecraft lists backups and three world slots for both Bedrock Realm plans, with one world active at a time. This gives you a straightforward way to keep alternate worlds without designing your own backup routine.

You have no suitable always-on computer
A Realm avoids buying or repurposing a machine. It also avoids the noise, power draw, operating-system updates, and network exposure that can come with leaving a server at home.
When a Bedrock Dedicated Server is the better choice
You are comfortable administering a computer
Self-hosting suits someone who can extract an archive, launch the server software, edit configuration files, monitor a running process, and keep the operating system and network secure. The official documentation assumes that the host can perform those tasks.
You want direct access to local world files
BDS creates the server files on your machine. That can be useful when you want to manage storage and backups yourself, but it also means that protecting the files is your responsibility. The official page does not offer a Realm-style cloud-retention promise for a self-hosted world.
You prefer control over availability
You decide when the server runs, where it is hosted, and how it is maintained. That control is valuable for a household server or a lab machine, provided you accept that a powered-off computer or failed network makes the world unavailable.

How to set up a Bedrock Realm
- Verify editions and accounts. Confirm that each participant will use Bedrock Edition and that console players understand their platform’s separate online-multiplayer requirement.
- Open Minecraft’s Bedrock Realm purchase flow. Use the official setup tutorial at Minecraft’s Bedrock Realm setup guide. Choose the standard plan for a group that fits the smaller simultaneous-player tier, or Realms Plus when the larger tier and Marketplace Pass catalog are important.
- Create or select the world. The Realm can use a new world or an eligible existing world through Minecraft’s in-game flow. Keep the three-slot limit in mind: one world is active at a time.
- Invite players. Add the Bedrock accounts that should be able to join. Invitations and simultaneous capacity are separate: inviting additional people does not increase the number who can play at once.
- Check access on each device. Have every player connect once before a scheduled group session. On consoles, verify that the required platform online subscription is active.
- Record the renewal date. The qualifying trial and subscription renew automatically unless canceled. Set a reminder if you are testing the service or only need it for a fixed project.
For plan details, current regional availability, and the expiration FAQ, use Minecraft’s official Realms page. Product terms can change, so treat the page shown at purchase as the controlling information.
How to set up a Bedrock Dedicated Server
- Choose a compatible host. Minecraft lists Windows 10 version 10.0.15063 or later, Windows Server 2016 or later, or Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later. Other Linux distributions are listed as unsupported on the cited page.
- Download the official package. Get the Bedrock Dedicated Server from Minecraft’s Bedrock server download page, rather than an unofficial re-packaged archive.
- Extract the files. Place the server package in a dedicated folder with enough free storage for the software, world data, logs, and your own backups.
- Launch the server. Start the server executable from the extracted folder and watch its console output for startup or configuration errors. Keep the window or service running whenever players need access.
- Adjust configuration files. Use the files supplied with the package to set the world and server behavior you need. Change one setting at a time, retain a copy of the original files, and restart the process after configuration changes when the documentation requires it.
- Prepare the network. The server connection uses an IP address and port. Make sure the host’s local firewall and router rules permit the intended traffic, and understand whether the address can change on your broadband connection.
- Test from a Bedrock client. Connect first from a device on the same network, then test from the external network your group will use. This separates a server-process problem from an internet-routing problem.
- Establish maintenance. Decide who applies server updates, watches storage, copies world files, restarts the process, and responds when the host computer is unavailable.
For exact package versions and any changed prerequisites, consult the current official download page. The steps above describe the documented workflow without assuming a particular third-party hosting panel or operating-system service manager.

Hardware and network requirements: read the official figures carefully
Minecraft’s server page lists 4 GB of RAM and between 180 MB and 1 GB of available storage in its system-requirements section. The same page’s FAQ says at least 1 GB of RAM for small servers and recommends more memory, storage, and processing power for larger worlds or more players. Those statements are not a single precise build specification; they are differing guidance on the same official page.
Use the figures as a starting point for checking an existing computer, not as a guarantee that a particular machine will support a particular group size. World complexity, simulation activity, concurrent players, operating-system overhead, and other programs all affect headroom. A broadband connection is also listed, and the server must remain reachable for players outside the host’s local network.
Should you buy a mini PC?
A mini PC can be an optional way to obtain a small, quiet computer for self-hosting when you do not already have suitable hardware. Minecraft’s requirements do not identify a required mini-PC model, nor do they establish that any particular model will support a particular number of players. Choose hardware only after checking its operating system, memory, storage, network connection, cooling, and ability to run continuously; treat any player-count claim as unverified unless you have tested it yourself.

Backups, expiration, and ownership responsibilities
Realm retention after cancellation
Minecraft says Realm worlds remain downloadable for 18 months after the subscription expires. Download the world during that window if you are ending the subscription or moving to another arrangement. The automatic-renewal rule means cancellation timing matters.
Self-hosted files
A dedicated server keeps its world files on the host computer. The reviewed documentation does not state a managed backup schedule or cloud-retention period comparable to Realms. Create your own backup routine, store copies on a separate device, and verify that a copy can be restored before treating the server as protected.
Multiple worlds
Realm plans list three world slots with one active world. A self-hosted server can store files locally, but the cited page does not promise a matching slot system or explain a comparable cloud workflow. Organize local worlds deliberately and label backups with dates so that an accidental overwrite is easier to recover from.
Console, account, and connection realities
Minecraft lists Windows PC, Xbox, PlayStation, mobile, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 Bedrock players as clients for a Bedrock Dedicated Server, using the server IP address and port. Device support does not eliminate account, parental-control, local-network, router, or console-policy restrictions. The official material does not provide a complete troubleshooting guide for every platform.
Console multiplayer subscriptions are separate from the Realm price. The cited sources do not establish a different rule for a dedicated server, so check the current online-service requirement for each console before planning a group session.
Troubleshooting by symptom
No one can connect
- Confirm the server process is running and the host computer has not slept, shut down, or lost its network connection.
- Recheck the IP address and port entered by the client. A local address may work inside the home but not from the internet.
- Verify that the host firewall and router configuration allow the intended traffic.
- Confirm every player is using Bedrock Edition and a supported client platform.
One player cannot join while others can
- Check that the player is using the correct edition and an account invited to the Realm, or the correct server address for BDS.
- On a console, check the platform’s online subscription and account privacy settings.
- Test another network, such as a phone hotspot, to determine whether the problem is local routing rather than the world itself.
The world is unavailable when the owner is away
That behavior is expected for a dedicated server whose host computer is off or unreachable. A Realm is designed to remain online without the owner playing. If self-hosting, keep the machine and required server process running; if that responsibility is unacceptable, the hosted model is a better match.
The server becomes unstable as the group grows
The official page gives general resource guidance rather than a guaranteed player-capacity number. Check available memory, storage, processing load, and network stability, then reduce competing workloads or move to stronger hardware. Do not infer that the Realm player tiers map directly to BDS performance.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose standard Bedrock Realms when a small group needs an always-online private world, managed backups, and the simplest setup.
- Choose Realms Plus when the group needs the larger simultaneous-player tier or values the rotating Marketplace Pass catalog.
- Choose BDS when someone can administer compatible Windows or Ubuntu hardware, maintain the network, and create independent backups.
- Delay the decision until everyone confirms Bedrock Edition; Java players cannot join a Bedrock Realm through the same service.
- Budget honestly by adding self-hosting’s hardware, electricity, broadband, maintenance, and time costs instead of comparing a subscription only with a free download.
Bottom line
A Realm buys convenience and dependable availability: Minecraft hosts the world, invited Bedrock players can join while the owner is offline, and the plans include defined player tiers, backups, and world slots. A Bedrock Dedicated Server buys control and local ownership of the files in exchange for running the computer, network, software, and backup process yourself. Pick the option that matches your group’s tolerance for administration, not just the apparent software price.
