That rule is dimension-specific. A bed is a normal sleeping and spawn-setting item in the Overworld, but using it in the Nether or the End causes an explosion. Nether travelers need a respawn anchor instead.

A standard Minecraft bed uses six ingredients arranged in two rows. Collect the following before opening your crafting table:

The recipe does not use the top row. You can gather the wool and planks in advance, then craft several beds by repeating the same pattern. A bed made from a different wool color is still a bed; the color changes its appearance, not its basic Overworld spawn function.

How to craft the bed
- Gather three wool blocks. Check that the three blocks match in color before crafting. If you are combining wool from different sources, sort it first so a mismatched block does not occupy the recipe.
- Gather three wood planks. Choose any wood type and keep the three plank slots consistent with that choice.
- Open a crafting table. The bed is a shaped recipe, so place the ingredients in the grid rather than relying on a single inventory-crafting slot.
- Fill the middle row with wool. Put one of the three same-color wool blocks in each of the three middle-row slots.
- Fill the bottom row with planks. Put one wood plank in each of the three bottom-row slots.
- Collect the result. Move the bed from the result slot into your inventory, then carry it to the location where you want your base or temporary camp.
The complete pattern is a wool row directly above a plank row:

In a normal three-by-three crafting grid, read that table from left to right: the three wool blocks form a horizontal line, and the three planks form the horizontal line immediately below it.
How to set your spawn point
Carry the bed to a safe place in the Overworld and place it on a stable, reachable surface. Then interact with the placed bed. When the interaction is accepted, the game sets the bed’s location as your respawn point. You do not have to complete a night’s sleep for the point to be saved; current Java guidance also allows a successful daytime interaction even when you cannot sleep yet.
The clearest confirmation is the chat message Respawn point set.
Minecraft’s official guidance uses that message as the success signal. If you do not see it, treat the point as unconfirmed and try the interaction again after checking the bed’s placement.

Set the point immediately after moving
A saved point belongs to the bed’s location and its usable state. It does not follow the item in your inventory and it does not update merely because you built a new room around it. Whenever you relocate a base, place the bed in the new room and use it before exploring farther. This avoids returning to the world’s original spawn if the old location is dismantled.
Sleeping and setting spawn are separate outcomes
In the Overworld, using the bed can set the point even when the game does not let you sleep at that moment. The important test is the confirmation message, not whether the night passes. If an interaction is rejected, fix the obstruction or position problem first rather than assuming that a brief click saved the point.

Place the bed so it remains a valid respawn location
A bed can be present in the world yet fail as a respawn location if its location is no longer usable. Leave room around and above it when you build. A clear approach makes it easier to interact with the bed, and open space reduces the chance that you will wake into a blocked or dangerous position.
- Keep the bed accessible. Do not bury it behind solid blocks or put it where you cannot reach the interaction side.
- Leave overhead clearance. Low ceilings and blocks above the bed can prevent a safe return.
- Keep the surrounding blocks clear. Furniture, construction, or terrain that closes the available space can make the saved location unusable.
- Protect the room from hazards. A respawn that places you in an unsafe position can turn a successful save into a second death.
These precautions matter most in temporary camps. A bed beside a mine entrance may be convenient, but a cramped tunnel or a room that you later seal can invalidate the point. Build a small, open shelter first, set the point, and only then add walls, storage, or decoration.

What happens if you break or move the bed?
Breaking the bed does not move the saved spawn point to wherever you place the item next. The game records the original bed location and its usable state. If you pick up that bed, carry it to another room, and place it there, the old point is not automatically transferred.
The same applies if the bed remains technically present but becomes blocked. When you die, the game checks whether the recorded location still contains a usable bed and a safe place to return. If the bed is missing or blocked, that saved point cannot be used and you return to the world’s default spawn instead.

Safe relocation procedure
- Choose and clear the new room before touching the old bed.
- Break the old bed only when you are ready to move it.
- Place the bed in the new location with open space around and above it.
- Interact with it immediately.
- Wait for
Respawn point set.
in chat before leaving the area. - Only then remove any temporary shelter at the old location.
This sequence prevents the common mistake of assuming that a carried bed still protects you during the journey between bases.
Why beds explode in the Nether and the End
Standard beds have normal sleeping and spawn-setting behavior only in the Overworld. If you try to use one in the Nether or the End, it explodes instead of opening a normal sleep interaction. The explosion is intentional game behavior, not a random bug; Mojang’s issue tracking identifies the dimension-specific explosion as intended.

Nether
Do not test a bed by right-clicking it in a Nether shelter. Even a bed that was safely used in the Overworld becomes an explosive object when used in the Nether. Carrying one through the portal is fine as transport, but interacting with it there is the dangerous action.
For a Nether respawn location, use a respawn anchor. It is the Nether-specific alternative for establishing where you return after death. Set it up and use it according to the game’s interaction prompts rather than trying to make an ordinary bed work.
The End
The same warning applies in the End: using a standard bed causes an explosion rather than normal sleep or spawn setting. The End does not provide a normal bed-based route for setting a personal spawn point, so do not bring a bed into an End base expecting Overworld behavior.
Explosion-risk checklist
- Use a standard bed for sleeping and spawn setting in the Overworld.
- Never interact with that bed in the Nether or the End.
- Use a respawn anchor when you need a Nether respawn location.
- Assume a bed’s color, age, or previous use does not override the dimension rule.
Standard bed, respawn anchor, and the preview Straw Bed
These items are not interchangeable. The table separates the documented behavior of the normal bed from the Nether option and a 2026 Java snapshot feature.

The Straw Bed is a separate preview item described in a 2026 Java snapshot. It is not the wool-and-planks bed in this guide, and snapshot content can change before a regular release. For a dependable survival spawn point, use the standard bed in the Overworld or the respawn-anchor route in the Nether.

No “Respawn point set.” message
Interact with the placed bed again in the Overworld and watch the chat area. If the message still does not appear, move the bed to an open, reachable patch and retry. A bed that is merely in your inventory cannot receive a spawn point, and an interaction in the Nether or End is an explosion trigger rather than a successful save.
I broke the bed and died later
Breaking the bed removes the object at the saved location; it does not preserve the point somewhere else. If the recorded bed is missing when you die, the game falls back to the world’s original spawn. Place a replacement bed, use it, and verify the confirmation message before continuing.
The bed is still there, but I returned to world spawn
Check for blocks or construction that now obstruct the bed or the space where a player would return. A bed can fail the validity check when its location is blocked, even if you can see part of the bed. Clear the area, use the bed again, and confirm the message.
I want a Nether base
Do not place a normal bed in that base for respawning. Use a respawn anchor, and keep ordinary beds for Overworld shelters. This avoids the explosion that occurs when a standard bed is used in the Nether.
I saw a different bed in a video
Check whether the video is showing the 2026 Java snapshot Straw Bed. That preview item is one-use and does not set a spawn point, so its behavior cannot be substituted for the standard wool-and-planks bed described here.
A practical bed workflow for new worlds
- Prepare ingredients. Set aside three matching wool blocks and three planks of one wood type.
- Craft before a long trip. Use the three-by-three table pattern so the bed is ready before nightfall or a dangerous expedition.
- Build an open shelter. Give the bed clear space on the sides and above it instead of squeezing it into a one-block recess.
- Set and verify. Interact with the bed in the Overworld and look for
Respawn point set.
- Recheck after construction. If you add walls, floors, or furniture around the bed, make sure the return space remains open.
- Repeat after relocation. A new base needs a new successful interaction; carrying the old bed is not enough.
- Change dimensions deliberately. Leave the standard bed for the Overworld, use a respawn anchor in the Nether, and never use a standard bed in the End.
Following that order turns the bed into both a reliable checkpoint and a safe place to pass the night, while avoiding the dimension trap that destroys unprepared Nether and End camps.
