Minecraft has five axolotl colors: blue, cyan, gold, wild (brown), and leucistic (pink). They are aquatic mobs that can briefly be out of water, but they must return to water periodically. Leaving one on land for too long causes it to die, so every permanent pen or display area needs a water section.

Color does not change the capture method or the food used for breeding. The important distinction is that blue is obtained through breeding rather than reliable natural searching.

Search lush cave biomes
Natural axolotls spawn in lush cave biomes, underwater and around clay blocks. Mojang describes their habitat as “lush cave biomes, around clay blocks underwater.” That combination is more useful than searching any random underground pool: find a lush cave, then inspect its submerged clay.
An azalea tree at the surface can suggest that a lush cave lies below, but it is not a guarantee. Some azalea trees do not generate above a lush cave, so treat the tree as a clue rather than a locator.

- Mark your base and bring food, light sources, spare tools, and at least one water bucket.
- Look for an azalea tree while exploring the surface, then dig or explore toward the underground cave system without assuming the tree is directly above the chamber.
- Once inside a lush cave, identify pools or flooded passages with clay blocks beneath the water.
- Scan the water around that clay for the five natural colors. Keep the bucket ready before approaching an axolotl.
- If the cave is dangerous or difficult to revisit, place a temporary water enclosure nearby before collecting several animals.
Do not confuse a lush cave’s vegetation with the actual spawning requirement. The underwater clay and the lush-cave biome are the key environmental clues.

How to catch an axolotl with a bucket
Prepare the correct bucket
You need a standard bucket filled with water. An empty bucket cannot capture an axolotl, and a bucket containing another liquid is not the required tool. Fill the bucket from a water source before entering the cave.
Capture procedure
- Hold the water-filled bucket.
- Aim at the axolotl itself, not at a nearby block.
- Use the bucket on the axolotl.
- Confirm that the item in your inventory is now a bucket of axolotl.
- Repeat with additional adults if you intend to breed them.
The bucket form is the safe way to move an axolotl over a long distance. It prevents the animal from being stranded on land during the journey and lets you transport it through ordinary terrain or back to your base.
Transport and build a safe enclosure
At the destination, release each bucket of axolotl into a water-filled pen, aquarium, or other enclosure. Axolotls can leave the water temporarily, but they need to return to it periodically; a dry display area is not a safe home.

Enclosure checklist
- Provide enough water for the axolotls to remain submerged or return to water easily.
- Seal openings that could let them wander away from the intended area.
- Keep the enclosure close to your base if you plan to breed repeatedly.
- Leave room to use a bucket of tropical fish on each adult.
- If you are collecting a rare color, separate or label groups so you can identify the parent carrying that color.
When you release an axolotl, use the bucket at the intended water location rather than dropping the item on dry ground. If you must cross a long distance, carry the animals in buckets until you reach the finished enclosure.
How to breed axolotls
What counts as food
Breeding requires tropical fish held in buckets. Mojang specifies tropical fish as the favorite food and notes that they must be transported in a bucket. An ordinary tropical-fish item in your inventory does not activate breeding; the fish must remain bucketed.

Breeding steps
- Capture two adult axolotls and release them into the same water enclosure.
- Catch tropical fish and place each fish in a bucket, producing buckets of tropical fish.
- Hold a bucket of tropical fish and use it on the first adult.
- Use another bucket of tropical fish on the second adult. Both adults must be put into love mode.
- Wait for the baby axolotl to appear.
- Allow the parents’ edition-specific cooldown to expire before trying again.
Parents can breed again after five minutes in Java Edition or one minute in Bedrock Edition. The cooldown is separate from the baby’s growth time, so a new baby does not become an adult immediately.

Baby growth
A baby axolotl takes about 20 minutes to reach adulthood. Feeding can make it grow faster. Keep young axolotls in water while they mature, and maintain enough space to identify adults when you resume breeding.
How to get a blue axolotl
Why natural searching is not enough
Blue is the rare breeding outcome, with a stated probability of 1/1,200 for a baby axolotl. Finding more ordinary adults in caves does not provide a dependable shortcut; the practical route is to breed repeatedly until a blue baby appears.
The 1/1,200 figure is a chance for each breeding result, not a guarantee after a fixed number of attempts. Treat every attempt as independent and plan for a large supply of tropical fish and enough enclosure space for growing offspring.
Expand a blue line
- Breed ordinary adults until one baby is blue.
- Keep the blue axolotl alive in a water enclosure until it reaches adulthood.
- Breed the adult blue axolotl with another adult axolotl.
- For each baby, there is a 50% chance of inheriting the blue parent’s color.
- Retain blue offspring and repeat to increase the number of blue adults available for future breeding.
The 50% inheritance chance makes a blue parent useful after the first success, even when the other parent is not blue. It does not make every baby blue, so continue using separate enclosures or clear labels if you are maintaining a color line.
Natural hunting or a lush-cave farm?
For one or two ordinary axolotls, searching a natural lush cave is usually the simpler project. A farm becomes more attractive when you want many animals, a steady supply of breeding attempts, or repeated chances at the blue variant.

How to set up a natural-generation axolotl farm
The farming method described for axolotls uses a dark water room in a lush-cave biome. Clay is placed beneath the water area so the room matches the natural spawning conditions.
Construction and operation
- Locate a lush cave with a reliable underground water area.
- Choose a chamber that can be enclosed and made dark.
- Build a water-filled spawning room and ensure clay is beneath the spawning space.
- Move more than 24 blocks away from the room to allow spawning to begin.
- Return to the room and collect axolotls with water-filled buckets.
- Move each capture to your protected enclosure or breeding area.
- Feed or breed captured axolotls so they remain interacted with and do not despawn.
The 24-block distance is an operating step for this tutorial’s setup: stand farther than that while waiting for spawning, then approach to collect the mobs. A farm does not eliminate the need to keep the animals in water after capture or to provide bucketed tropical fish for breeding.

- For natural searching, inspect additional clay-lined pools; an azalea tree alone does not prove that a lush cave is below.
The bucket will not capture an axolotl
- Fill the bucket with water first.
- Aim at the axolotl rather than the surrounding block.
- Use the water bucket directly on the animal and confirm that the resulting item is a bucket of axolotl.
Breeding does not start
- Confirm that both animals are adults and in the same water enclosure.
- Use a bucket of tropical fish on each adult. Loose tropical fish items do not work.
- Check whether the parents are still on cooldown: five minutes in Java Edition or one minute in Bedrock Edition.
- Make sure you are not using a water bucket; that captures an axolotl instead of feeding it.
A baby disappears or dies
- Keep it in a water enclosure; axolotls cannot remain on land indefinitely.
- Prevent accidental escapes from open pens.
- Remember that a baby needs about 20 minutes to mature unless feeding accelerates its growth.

- Find a lush cave and inspect underwater clay.
- Bring a water-filled bucket for each capture trip.
- Capture adults directly with the bucket and release them into a water enclosure.
