The best Minecraft armor at a glance
Armor decisions become easier when you separate three systems that are often mixed together:

- Tier: the material determines the armor’s defensive capability, toughness, durability and the resources needed to obtain or replace it.
- Enchantments: these change how well a piece handles falls, fire, projectiles, explosions, water and general damage.
- Trims: these add a visible pattern and color but do not improve protection, durability or any other gameplay statistic.
Diamond is the practical endgame base because Netherite equipment is made by upgrading diamond equipment. Netherite is the final material upgrade for players who can afford the exploration and rare resources involved. A Diamond Chestplate reference lists +8 armor and +2 armor toughness; the exact protection of a full set depends on the pieces you wear and the damage source.

How to choose a tier: five questions that matter
1. What damage are you preparing for?
Protection is the broadest answer because it helps against ordinary damage from many sources. Specialized protection enchantments are stronger for a single hazard but less flexible. A player who spends most of a session mining near lava has a different priority from one exploring an ocean monument or raiding a bastion.

2. How much durability and repair work can you support?
Diamond and Netherite last longer than early materials, but any armor eventually loses durability. Unbreaking slows that loss, while Mending converts experience into repairs. Without those enchantments, a high-tier set is still expensive to maintain, especially when you repeatedly take fall, fire or projectile damage.
3. Is the upgrade cost justified now?
Diamond already provides a dependable endgame foundation. Netherite is worthwhile when you have a secure Nether route, enough ancient debris and gold for ingots, and a plan for finding or duplicating the upgrade template. If those resources would delay tools, a safe base or essential exploration equipment, keep the diamond set and upgrade later.
4. Do you need environmental movement or protection?
Boots and helmets can be specialized without changing the material tier. Feather Falling protects against falls; Depth Strider improves movement through water; Frost Walker lets you walk over water but changes how you interact with it. Respiration and Aqua Affinity make underwater work practical. Pick based on the environments you actually visit.
5. Is the difference cosmetic?
If two sets provide the same tier and enchantments, a trim changes only their look. Choose the pattern and material for rarity, the route required to find its template, and the contrast against your base armor rather than for combat performance.
Upgrading diamond armor to Netherite
Minecraft 1.20 changed the process: Netherite equipment crafting now also requires a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template. The template is found in Bastion Remnant chests, and every Treasure Room Bastion Remnant contains two templates. A template is consumed each time you use it, so a complete four-piece set needs four copies unless you duplicate one first.

- Craft or obtain diamond armor. Upgrade only pieces you intend to keep, since the Netherite step is an investment.
- Find a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template. Search Bastion Remnant chests, taking care around piglins, brutes, lava and narrow corridors.
- Collect one Netherite ingot per armor piece. A full helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots set therefore needs four ingots.
- Use a smithing table. Place the Netherite Upgrade template in the template slot, the diamond armor in the item slot and one Netherite ingot in the material slot. Take the resulting Netherite piece.
- Repeat for each piece. Keep the unupgraded diamond set or spare armor somewhere safe until the entire upgrade is complete.
Duplicating the upgrade template
Because templates are consumed, duplication is efficient when you are upgrading four armor pieces or several tools. The official recipe uses seven diamonds, one block of the template’s material and the template itself, producing two copies. For a Netherite Upgrade template, the material block is the required netherrack block. Plan the diamonds before you begin; losing the only template in a dangerous Bastion run can halt the upgrade project.

The following setup is a practical survival foundation, not an official Mojang ranking. It favors broad coverage and lower replacement work rather than a single specialized activity.

Recommended enchantment loadouts by play style
Everyday survival and exploration
- Helmet: Protection, Unbreaking, Mending, Respiration and Aqua Affinity.
- Chestplate: Protection, Unbreaking and Mending.
- Leggings: Protection, Unbreaking and Mending.
- Boots: Protection, Unbreaking, Mending and Feather Falling; add Depth Strider if water travel is common.
This is the least disruptive set for mixed threats because it does not assume that every encounter involves fire, explosions or arrows.
Nether expeditions
Keep the general foundation, then consider Fire Protection on a piece if fire and lava are the dominant threat in your route. Do not sacrifice every instance of Protection for specialization: Nether fortresses, Bastions and open lava fields expose you to several damage types at once. Feather Falling remains valuable around cliffs and ravines.
Ocean monuments and underwater building
Use Respiration and Aqua Affinity on the helmet. Choose Depth Strider boots when you need controlled movement through water; choose Frost Walker only when crossing open water is more important than precise underwater maneuvering. The trim you wear has no effect on the monument’s guardians or your mining speed.

Combat near ranged mobs
Projectile Protection can be justified when arrows are the main danger, but mixed encounters usually favor Protection. Keep Feather Falling on boots because ranged attacks often knock players from ledges, where fall damage becomes the real finisher.
Protection enchantments: when to specialize
Protection, Fire Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection are competing choices for an armor slot. You cannot stack them freely on the same piece, so decide whether you need broad coverage or a focused defense.
- Use Protection across the set when you explore varied terrain, fight mixed mobs or do not know what the next encounter will be.
- Use Fire Protection when repeated lava, fire or flame damage is the central risk and you are willing to give up some general coverage.
- Use Blast Protection for a planned explosion-heavy task rather than as an automatic replacement for every Protection piece.
- Use Projectile Protection when arrows and similar attacks dominate, such as a route with many ranged enemies.
Specialization is a loadout decision, not a permanent requirement. Keep a second enchanted piece or spare set if you regularly switch between the Overworld, Nether, ocean structures and explosion-prone areas.
Armor trims: appearance, not power
Mojang’s official 1.20 documentation states: “Armor trims are purely visual with no gameplay benefits.” A trim does not add armor points, toughness, durability, enchantments, knockback resistance or environmental protection. It cannot turn an iron chestplate into a diamond one, and it does not make Netherite stronger than its normal statistics.

- The armor piece to decorate.
- An Armor Trim Smithing Template that determines the pattern.
- A material that determines the trim color.
The documented trim materials are iron, copper, gold, lapis, emerald, diamond, Netherite, redstone, amethyst and quartz. Select the material for contrast with the base armor and the visual style you want. Rarity and the exploration route to the template are meaningful collection goals, but neither changes combat performance.

Structure association determines the exploration route. Trail Ruins are different because their templates come from brushing Suspicious Gravel rather than opening a conventional chest. Ocean Monuments have no chests for this purpose; Elder Guardians can drop the Tide template.

Planning an exploration route
Choose templates according to the structures you can reach safely. A Coast template may arrive naturally during early ocean travel, while Silence, Tide or Spire requires a more specialized expedition. Bring spare food, blocks, tools and a way to mark your route. The pattern is reusable only after duplication, so do not spend a rare template on a decorative piece until you are certain you can obtain another copy or have enough diamonds and material for the duplication recipe.
Applying and duplicating armor trims
- Open a smithing table.
- Insert the Armor Trim Smithing Template. This selects the visible pattern.
- Insert the helmet, chestplate, leggings or boots. Trims can be applied to all four armor slots.
- Insert one trim material. The material controls the color, not the pattern.
- Preview the result and take the decorated armor. Check the contrast in the inventory and in the environments where you normally play.
Templates are consumed when used. To duplicate one, combine the template with seven diamonds and one block of that template’s material in the official duplication recipe; the output is two copies. Duplicate before decorating a full set if you want the same pattern on multiple pieces, because each application consumes another template.
Durability, repairs and common mistakes
Putting Thorns on everything
Thorns is attractive in close combat, but reflected damage can consume durability faster. If your priority is long expeditions with minimal repairs, leave Thorns off the core set or use it only on a spare combat piece.
Using the wrong boot movement enchantment
Depth Strider and Frost Walker are alternatives. Depth Strider suits swimming, underwater construction and controlled movement. Frost Walker suits crossing lakes and oceans on the surface. Decide before enchanting because you cannot combine both on the same boots.

Replacing Protection everywhere with a specialized type
A full specialized set can perform worse when the threat changes. Use Fire, Blast or Projectile Protection for a clearly defined hazard and retain general Protection for mixed exploration.
Spending the only template too early
Netherite Upgrade and Armor Trim templates are consumed. Secure duplicates before upgrading several items or decorating an entire set. This is especially important for a Netherite project because losing access to the template delays every remaining upgrade.
Ignoring repair planning
Unbreaking extends durability, but Mending is what reduces long-term replacement work. If you enchant several Mending items, watch which item receives experience so your armor repairs instead of an unrelated tool. Keep an unenchanted backup set for dangerous trips while your main armor is being repaired.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you reached diamond, or are iron pieces still the sensible replacement-cost choice?
- Are you prepared to obtain one Netherite ingot and one Netherite Upgrade template copy for each upgrade?
- Do all four pieces have Unbreaking, and can you obtain Mending?
- Does your helmet need Respiration and Aqua Affinity for planned underwater work?
- Will your boots benefit more from Depth Strider, Frost Walker or simply Feather Falling?
- Is a specialized protection type justified by a repeated hazard, or would broad Protection cover more situations?
- Are you choosing a trim for pattern, material contrast and collection value rather than expecting a defensive bonus?
- Have you duplicated rare templates before consuming them on multiple pieces?
Bottom line
Build toward a fully enchanted diamond set, then upgrade each piece to Netherite when the template and ingots are available. Protection, Unbreaking and Mending form the dependable core; Feather Falling, Respiration, Aqua Affinity and a deliberate water-movement choice fill the environmental gaps. Treat specialized protection and Thorns as situational options, and treat every armor trim as a cosmetic project rather than a combat upgrade.
