MineColonies Create & Conquer: Complete Modpack Installation and Server Setup Guide (Minecraft 1.20.1)

A practical guide to installing MineColonies - Create & Conquer on Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge, hosting the matching server ZIP, avoiding version mismatches, tuning memory, and building your first colony.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MineColonies – Create & Conquer currently targets Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge. The simplest route is to install the matching CurseForge profile, launch it once, and keep the exact same Minecraft version, Forge build, modpack release, and configuration on every client and server. The listed 3.6.1 release includes a separate 1.20.1 Forge server ZIP for self-hosting.

This guide covers installation, memory planning, self-hosted server setup, multiplayer version control, first-colony priorities, backups, and recovery. The pack is still being developed, so expect occasional bugs and use its issue tracker or community Discord when a problem cannot be reproduced from your local settings.

What MineColonies – Create & Conquer includes

Create & Conquer is an exploration-focused modpack built around MineColonies. It changes more than the colony interface: world generation and biomes are different, combat has additional mechanics, progression is loosely tiered, and magic and technology systems sit alongside settlement management. That combination makes the pack more demanding than a lightweight building-only profile and makes version consistency especially important in multiplayer.

Item Current documented value What it means
Minecraft version 1.20.1 Clients and a self-hosted server must use the same game version.
Mod loader Forge Install the loader selected by the pack profile; a manually assembled 1.20.1 profile is guided toward Forge 47.1.3 unless the pack pins another build.
Listed pack release 3.6.1 Use the server ZIP from the same release as the client profile.
Server artifact Separate Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server ZIP Download the server package associated with the client release rather than mixing files from another version.
Memory guidance 8GB–10GB minimum for smooth operation with intensive shaders, textures and similar features This is the pack author’s floor for the game process, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or player capacity.
Project status Active development Bugs can remain in a release; report reproducible problems through the issue tracker or Discord.

The listing showed 152,684 total downloads when its page was captured. That number changes continuously, so it is a historical popularity indicator rather than a current performance or support guarantee. An official server is also advertised through Discord and requires whitelisting; access is not the same as downloading the pack.

Check your computer before installing

Prepare the machine before opening the launcher. A modded client needs memory for Minecraft, Forge, the pack’s mods, loaded chunks and any visual additions. Windows, the launcher and background applications need memory too, so do not assign every gigabyte of physical RAM to Minecraft.

Memory planning

  • Use 8GB–10GB as the minimum allocation range stated by the pack team when running demanding shaders, high-resolution textures or comparable additions.
  • Leave several gigabytes for the operating system and launcher. On a 16GB computer, an allocation near the lower end of the pack’s guidance is safer than reserving nearly all system memory.
  • If one computer runs the client and a local server, reserve additional headroom for both Java processes. The right value depends on view distance, loaded chunks, colony size and the number of players; no universal player-count limit has been published.
  • A 16GB DDR4 desktop kit is a practical upgrade target, but DDR generation, speed, module capacity and slot layout must match the motherboard. Memory capacity alone cannot correct an incompatible module.

Storage and graphics considerations

Keep the profile and world on a drive with enough free space for the launcher, downloaded libraries, logs and backups. An SSD generally shortens loading and world-save delays compared with a hard disk, but the pack’s documented requirements do not establish a specific drive model or minimum throughput. Start without shaders if you are diagnosing stutter; add visual enhancements one at a time after the unmodified profile is stable.

Install the official profile through CurseForge

For most players, the launcher route avoids missing dependencies and produces a reproducible profile. Use the current profile shown for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge rather than selecting a similarly named pack for another game version.

  1. Install the CurseForge application and add your existing Minecraft installation when prompted.
  2. Open Browse and search for MineColonies – Create & Conquer by Isk053. Check the author and game version so you do not install a similarly titled project.
  3. Select the profile that targets Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge. Choose the current release offered by the listing; the documented 3.6.1 release is paired with a matching server ZIP.
  4. Click Install and allow CurseForge to download the mod files, Forge components and dependencies. Do not copy individual files from a different profile into the new instance.
  5. Launch the profile once before changing graphics, shader or memory settings. The first run creates directories and lets Forge complete its setup; close the game normally after reaching the title screen or a test world.
  6. Open the profile’s settings and record the displayed Minecraft version, Forge build and pack release. Give those values to anyone joining your world.

The official MineColonies launcher guidance uses this same pre-made-pack flow: select the pack, let the launcher download its files, and launch the resulting instance. If the profile offers an update, make a backup of existing worlds before accepting it.

Manual Forge installation: when and how to use it

A manual profile is useful when a launcher-managed instance cannot be used or when you need a controlled server or test environment. It requires more checking because Forge, mods, configs and scripts must all be assembled consistently.

  1. Obtain the Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge installer appropriate to the pack’s instructions.
  2. Run the installer and choose Install client for a local game profile. The official manual guide points to Forge 47.1.3 for manually assembled 1.20.1 profiles, but use the pack’s pinned loader when its profile specifies a different build.
  3. Start the new Forge profile once, then close Minecraft so the required directories are created.
  4. Install the exact Create & Conquer release and its dependencies into that profile. Do not assume that a newer mod file is compatible merely because it also says 1.20.1.
  5. Compare the resulting mods, config, scripts and resource files with a known-good client profile. Keep a copy of the working folder before experimenting.

Manual installation is not a shortcut for the server ZIP. A client profile and a dedicated server have different launch files and directory expectations; follow the server procedure below for hosting.

Configure RAM, shaders and textures without creating instability

Start with a conservative configuration, then increase visual quality. The author’s quoted guidance is that “A minimum of 8GB–10GB of RAM is required for the pack to run smoothly with intensive shaders, textures, and similar features.” That statement describes a minimum range for smooth operation under demanding settings; it does not promise a fixed FPS value.

A practical tuning sequence

  1. Run the unmodified profile with default render distance and no shader pack. Record whether the title screen, a new world and a short travel session are stable.
  2. Set a memory allocation that leaves room for the operating system. If the launcher exposes a megabyte field, convert the intended gigabytes carefully and avoid allocating more than the computer can sustain.
  3. Lower render distance and simulation distance before reducing every visual option. Colony-heavy areas can load many entities and block updates even when the landscape is simple.
  4. Add a shader or high-resolution texture pack individually. Restart between changes so you can identify which addition causes a crash, long pauses or graphical corruption.
  5. Watch for symptoms of over-allocation: the operating system becomes unresponsive, background applications are evicted, or garbage collection causes long freezes. More assigned memory is not automatically faster.

If you host locally, test the client alone and then the server alone before running both together. The combined workload can expose a memory limit that neither process reaches by itself.

Keep every multiplayer installation identical

A multiplayer world is most reliable when all participants use the same Minecraft 1.20.1 version, Forge build, pack release and configuration files. “Almost the same” is enough to produce missing-mod errors, registry mismatches, disconnects or a world that behaves differently for one player.

  • Write down the pack release and Forge build from the launcher profile.
  • Distribute the same profile version to every player instead of asking each person to assemble files independently.
  • Do not remove a mod, edit a config or add a client-side visual mod until you know whether the server or pack requires the original file.
  • When updating, stop the server, back up the world, update a test copy first, and have every client update before the next shared session.

If only one person cannot connect, compare that player’s profile against a working client rather than changing the server repeatedly. Capture the exact error text and the relevant log section before reinstalling.

Set up a self-hosted Create & Conquer server

The documented self-hosting route uses the server ZIP listed with the same pack release as the client. The listing identifies the artifact as a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server package. Use a new directory so old mods or world files cannot silently contaminate the installation.

Install and initialize the files

  1. Create a dedicated server directory with enough free storage for the installation, world, logs and several backups.
  2. Download the server ZIP associated with the client’s Create & Conquer release and extract it into that directory.
  3. Install Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1 on the server. In the official Forge installer, choose Install Server and point it at the dedicated directory.
  4. Start the server once using the launch file supplied by the server package. The first run generates the EULA prompt, configuration folders, logs and world directory.
  5. Stop the process, read the EULA file, and accept it only if you agree to its terms. Start the server again and wait for the console to report that it is ready.
  6. Compare the server’s mods, config, scripts and pack version with the client profile. Replace mismatched files with those from the matching release rather than combining releases.

The canonical setup guidance confirms the Forge installer’s Install Server route but does not define one universal command line, Java-version matrix, port-forwarding recipe or capacity table. Those details vary with the operating system, network and current pack files. Use the launch files shipped with the server package and verify environment-specific requirements before opening the world to players.

Apply basic server controls

  • Enable a whitelist for a private group and add each player’s exact Minecraft account name.
  • Allocate memory appropriate to the number of players, loaded chunks and colony size, while leaving capacity for the operating system and any other services.
  • Keep the server address private. Give it only to intended players and avoid publishing it in screenshots or public posts.
  • Test a connection with a second account before investing in a permanent colony. This catches authentication, firewall and version errors while the world is still disposable.
  • Schedule regular world backups and retain more than one generation. A backup stored on the same drive as the live world is not protection against drive failure.

Self-hosting versus managed Minecraft hosting

A managed host can remove operating-system maintenance and network configuration, but compatibility still depends on the provider supporting Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge and this pack’s server files. No provider price or guaranteed capacity is established here, so confirm those details directly before paying.

Consideration Self-hosted server ZIP Managed hosting
File control Full access to Forge, mods, configs, scripts and backups. Depends on the host’s file manager, modpack support and permissions.
Setup effort You install Forge, accept the EULA, secure the network and maintain updates. The provider may automate installation, but you still verify the exact pack and loader versions.
Network responsibility You handle firewall, address sharing and any router configuration required by your network. The provider normally supplies a reachable address; account and access controls remain your responsibility.
Performance tuning Determined by your hardware, storage, connection and simultaneous client workload. Determined by the purchased plan and the provider’s hardware; check whether its memory allocation suits colony growth.
Recovery You choose backup frequency, location and rollback method. Confirm whether backups are automated, downloadable and restorable to a chosen point.
Cost information Uses your existing computer and electricity; no universal cost can be stated. Pricing and pack compatibility vary by provider and must be verified current.

Backups, updates and rollback

Back up before every meaningful change

Stop the server before copying the world. Include the world directory and, when your setup depends on them, the server’s configuration and scripts. Label archives with the pack release, Forge build and date so you can identify a compatible restore point. Keep one copy away from the live server.

Test an update on a copy

  1. Stop the live server and create a full backup.
  2. Duplicate the server directory or restore the backup into a separate test directory.
  3. Apply the new pack or Forge version only to the test copy.
  4. Start the copy, load the world, inspect a colony, and test player joining, chunk loading and key machines.
  5. Update every client to the same release only after the test world opens cleanly.
  6. Keep the prior server files until the group has completed a successful session on the new version.

Recover from a failed update

Stop the server rather than repeatedly restarting a corrupted world. Move the failed directory aside, restore the last known-good backup, reinstall its matching Forge and pack files, and test with one account. Do not open a newer world save in an older release unless the pack’s documentation explicitly supports that direction; world data can be changed during loading.

What to do first after creating a colony

The official getting-started tutorial assumes the pack is already installed. In a new world, place a Town Hall and select Create new colony. The Town Hall establishes the colony’s starting point and unlocks the settlement workflow.

First-session priorities

  1. Choose a site with room for expansion, access to basic resources and terrain that will not force every building onto steep or obstructed ground.
  2. Place the Town Hall, choose Create new colony, and read the first objectives before scattering decorative structures.
  3. Establish the warehouse and storage path early. Workers need a predictable place to deposit and retrieve materials.
  4. Provide a builder and the resources required for the first construction queue. A builder waiting on missing items can make the colony appear stalled when the real problem is logistics.
  5. Secure a dependable food supply before expanding the population. Track production and consumption rather than relying on a single short-term harvest.
  6. Build or assign guard coverage as threats increase. Combat mechanics and exploration hazards make an undefended settlement more expensive to repair.
  7. Follow the pack’s quests and progression prompts. They are the safest way to learn which MineColonies systems, technology features and magic options are available at your current stage.

Keep four systems in balance

  • Warehouse: central storage and delivery routes prevent builders and workers from idling.
  • Builder: construction consumes materials in bursts, so queue projects only when supply can support them.
  • Food: population growth without reliable production creates a recurring bottleneck.
  • Guards: defense protects the labor and materials already invested in the colony.

Expand one dependency at a time. A larger residential area without storage, food and defense increases delays rather than accelerating progress.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

Symptom Likely cause Action
Profile will not launch Wrong Minecraft version, Forge build, incomplete download or a damaged dependency. Confirm the profile is 1.20.1 on Forge, let the launcher repair or redownload the profile, and test a clean instance before restoring custom settings.
“Missing mods” or registry mismatch when joining Client and server releases, configs or mod files differ. Compare the exact pack release and Forge build, then replace altered files with the matching client/server package.
Long freezes or memory errors Shaders, high-resolution textures, excessive render distance or insufficient headroom when client and server share a machine. Remove visual additions, lower distances, close other applications and retest with a conservative allocation.
Server stops during first launch EULA not accepted, Forge server installation incomplete or launch files pointed at the wrong directory. Read the generated EULA prompt, verify that Forge was installed with Install Server, and start from the directory containing the server files.
Players cannot connect while local testing works Network, firewall, address or access-control issue rather than a modpack issue. Test with a second account on the intended network path, check the whitelist and firewall, and verify the address privately. Network settings are environment-specific.
Colony workers stand idle Missing materials, inaccessible storage, no assigned worker or a blocked building site. Inspect the building’s request list, warehouse inventory and worker assignment before placing another project.

When reporting a bug, include the pack release, Minecraft and Forge versions, steps that reproduce it, the relevant log excerpt and whether the issue occurs in a clean profile. The project is under active development, so a precise report is more useful than a general statement that the pack is broken.

Which setup route should you choose?

Your situation Best starting route Reason
First-time player installing on one computer CurseForge profile Dependencies and the pack’s pinned files are downloaded together.
Friends sharing a private world and one person controls the hardware Matching server ZIP on a dedicated directory Provides direct control over files, whitelist and backups.
Computer has limited memory or unreliable home networking Evaluate a managed host that explicitly supports this 1.20.1 Forge pack Moves server uptime and network administration elsewhere, but compatibility and backup terms must be confirmed.
Developer or advanced player testing configs Manual Forge profile plus a disposable test world Offers file-level control while isolating experiments from the long-term colony.

Regardless of route, use the same release on every client and server, keep backups before updates, and add shaders or high-resolution textures only after the base pack is stable.

Final checklist

  • Minecraft is 1.20.1 on Forge for every participant.
  • The client profile and server ZIP come from the same Create & Conquer release.
  • The profile launches once before custom settings are changed.
  • Memory leaves room for the operating system, especially when a local server and client share a computer.
  • Server files were initialized, the EULA was handled, and the whitelist is enabled for a private group.
  • World backups exist before the first major build and before every update.
  • Town Hall was placed, Create new colony was selected, and warehouse, builder, food and guards are being developed together.
