Instead, the resources you need depend on the workload: expected player count, map and game mode, mods, and whatever else runs on the same machine. Treat any hardware figure found elsewhere as a sizing estimate unless it is tied to a documented test.

The official setup is a separate, headless server program launched with Java. A dedicated host can stay online independently of a player’s game, while an in-game LAN or Steam session is simpler but ends when the host closes the game.

The current Mindustry server documentation explains how to run and connect to a server, but it does not publish a numerical RAM minimum, CPU model, maximum player count tied to hardware, or benchmark showing resource use. There is therefore no official specification such as “2 GB RAM” or “a quad-core processor” that can be quoted accurately.
That absence matters when comparing hosting plans. A container image, community guide, or hosting company may state a requirement for its own configuration, but that is not automatically a Mindustry project requirement. Capacity must be matched to the actual workload and to the other processes sharing the machine.

What determines practical capacity
- Concurrent players: More connected clients create more simulation and network work than a small private session.
- Map and mode: A large or busy map can impose a different load from a small, simple map.
- Mods: Mods can add processing, entities, assets, or network traffic that the base server does not use.
- Background services: Backups, control panels, databases, monitoring, or other game servers compete for CPU and memory.
- Availability goals: A short local session has different needs from a server expected to remain online continuously.
Use those factors to choose a machine, then observe its behavior under the workload you actually intend to host. The official sources provide no published benchmark from which to derive a universal player-to-RAM or player-to-CPU formula.
How a dedicated Mindustry server works
A dedicated server is a standalone, headless version of the game. It runs outside the normal game interface, generally from a terminal, and can continue operating while players connect from their own clients. The official guide recommends using a dedicated Linux or Windows machine for this arrangement.

The server release is run with Java. Starting the Java process loads the server program; it does not by itself select a map or begin a match. Once the console is available, the operator uses commands to control the server.
Core console commands
helpdisplays the available console commands.host <mapname> [mode]starts hosting the named map, optionally with a mode.
The bracketed parts are values you supply. For example, replace <mapname> with the map identifier you intend to host. Keep the command syntax exactly as shown by the server’s help output if your release presents additional options.

Dedicated server setup, step by step
- Choose a machine. Use a computer or virtual machine running Linux or Windows, with enough free CPU and memory for Mindustry plus the operating system and any other services. Because no official numeric minimum exists, leave headroom rather than allocating the entire machine to the Java process.
- Install a compatible Java runtime. The server is launched with Java. Install the version supported by the server release you downloaded, and verify that the
javacommand works in the terminal. - Obtain the server release. Place the Mindustry server JAR in a directory dedicated to the server. Keeping the JAR, configuration, logs, and backups together makes updates and recovery easier.
- Launch the JAR. From that directory, run
java -jar [server].jar, replacing the bracketed filename with the actual JAR name. The process should open a server console. - Check the console. Enter
helpto confirm that the process is accepting commands and to see the commands supported by your release. - Start a map. Enter
host <mapname> [mode]. Starting the process and hosting a map are separate actions, so perform this step before expecting players to join a match. - Allow network traffic. Permit port 6567 for both TCP and UDP in the machine’s firewall and, when applicable, in the upstream router. The official guide specifies both protocols.
- Test locally first. Connect from the same network before opening access to the public internet. This separates game configuration problems from router, firewall, or address problems.
- Keep the process available. For continuous operation, run the server on a machine that remains powered and connected. Plan how you will restart it after a crash, operating-system update, or network outage.
Networking: port 6567, routers and public access
The documented Mindustry server port is 6567 over TCP and UDP. Allowing only one protocol can produce confusing partial connectivity, so configure both where your firewall and router expose protocol choices.
Hosting behind a home router
Players on the same local network may be able to connect using the host’s local address. Players outside that network generally need a port-forwarding rule that sends incoming traffic on port 6567 to the computer running the server. The exact menus differ by router, so follow the router manufacturer’s instructions and assign the server computer a stable local address if the router supports that feature.

Home hosting also exposes the household’s public IP address to people who connect. The official guide advises considering that implication and reviewing hosted alternatives. Use a firewall, expose only the required service, and avoid forwarding unrelated administration ports.
Cloud or dedicated hosting
A rented virtual or dedicated machine can provide a stable public address and continuous uptime without forwarding through a home network. The official documentation names AWS, Linode, and DigitalOcean as examples of cloud or dedicated hosting. Those names are examples in the guide, not a current endorsement, price comparison, or guarantee of a particular plan’s suitability.

When comparing providers, check the current region, CPU allocation, memory allocation, bandwidth policy, storage, backup options, and recurring price. None of those commercial details is established by the Mindustry documentation itself.
Choosing between hosting methods

The official guide positions LAN or Steam hosting as the easy choice for a small local group. It presents a dedicated server as the better fit when you need more resources or continuous availability. Capacity and isolation still depend on the machine you select; the project does not publish a hardware threshold for either category.
How to size RAM and CPU without an official number
Start with the workload rather than a copied specification. Write down the largest session you expect, the maps and modes you will run, the mods that must be enabled, and every service that will share the host. Then choose a machine with spare capacity and verify it under realistic use.
A practical sizing process
- Define the peak case. Size for your busiest expected concurrent session, not the number of players online during a quiet test.
- Include the complete software stack. Account for the operating system, Java, Mindustry, mods, monitoring, backups, and any control or web services.
- Reserve headroom. Avoid operating at the machine’s limit; updates, log growth, and short activity spikes need room.
- Observe both resources. Check CPU utilization, memory pressure, swap activity, and connection stability while the busiest map and mode are active.
- Change one variable at a time. If performance is poor, test with fewer players, a lighter map, or fewer mods before assuming that adding RAM alone will solve it.
This process produces a workload-specific decision, not an official Mindustry requirement. If the machine also hosts unrelated services, isolate them or move them elsewhere so their failures and resource spikes do not take down the game server.

Can a Raspberry Pi run a Mindustry server?
The official FAQ says that a dedicated server can run on a Raspberry Pi if the correct Java version is installed. It does not identify a Pi model, state a RAM or CPU requirement, specify a maximum player count, or promise performance for every map and mod combination.
That makes Pi support conditional compatibility, not a recommendation for a particular board. Before relying on one, match the board and operating system to the Java version required by your server release, test the intended workload, and provide reliable power, storage, cooling, and network connectivity. A small private session may be a different proposition from a public, mod-heavy server that must remain online around the clock.
Common failure points and fixes
The process starts but nobody can join
- Confirm that a map was started with
host <mapname> [mode]; launching the JAR alone is not enough. - Check that port 6567 is allowed for both TCP and UDP in the host firewall.
- For home hosting, verify that the router forwards port 6567 to the correct internal machine and address.
- Test from the local network first, then test from an external network to identify whether the problem is local configuration or internet routing.
Players connect locally but not from outside
This usually points to the router or upstream network rather than the map command. Recheck the forwarding target, firewall rules, public address, and whether the internet connection permits inbound traffic. If the provider uses a network arrangement that does not give you an independently reachable public address, a cloud or dedicated host may be more practical.
The server becomes unstable under load
Reduce the test workload one factor at a time: fewer simultaneous players, a less demanding map, or fewer mods. Monitor CPU and memory while reproducing the problem, and stop unrelated services from competing with the server. Because there is no official benchmark, the observed workload is the evidence for your next hardware or configuration change.
The server stops after closing the terminal
A dedicated server is still a process that must remain running. Use the operating system’s service or process-management facilities to keep it supervised, restart it after failure, and start it automatically when the machine boots. The exact method depends on whether the host runs Linux or Windows.
Security, maintenance and operating cost
Public hosting is more than opening a port. Keep the operating system and Java runtime updated, restrict administrative access, back up worlds and configuration, and review logs for unexpected activity. On a home connection, weigh the privacy and availability consequences of exposing the household’s public IP. On a rented machine, include recurring hosting charges, provider limits, region, and backup costs in the decision.
For a temporary local game, the in-game host option avoids most of this administration. For a persistent public server, the additional work of a dedicated process, network rules, updates, and monitoring is the price of continuous availability and independent server operation.
A decision checklist
- Do you need the world online when no player has the game open?
- Will everyone play on one local network, or must people connect across the internet?
- Can your home network safely handle port forwarding, or would a hosted machine simplify routing?
- What is the peak concurrent player count, and which maps, modes, and mods will be active?
- What other programs will share the machine?
- Can you install the Java version required by the server release?
- Will you monitor CPU and memory and leave capacity for spikes?
- Do you have a restart, update, backup, and recovery plan?
If the answers point to a small, short-lived local session, use the in-game LAN or Steam host. If you need an independent process, public access, or continuous uptime, follow the dedicated-server setup and size the machine from your real workload. Mindustry’s documentation deliberately leaves RAM and CPU open, so an honest workload test is more useful than a fabricated universal minimum.
