Brushless describes the motor type; FUEL is Milwaukee’s broader system label for tools that combine its POWERSTATE brushless motor, REDLITHIUM battery pack, and REDLINK PLUS hardware and software.
What “brushless” and “FUEL” mean
Brushless describes the motor
A brushless motor is one component of a tool. Milwaukee calls the POWERSTATE motor in its M18 FUEL range brushless. The label “brushless,” by itself, does not tell you whether a Milwaukee tool has the rest of the FUEL system.

FUEL describes a broader Milwaukee system
Milwaukee describes M18 FUEL tools as combining three technologies: a POWERSTATE brushless motor, REDLITHIUM battery packs, and REDLINK PLUS hardware and software. That is the basis for the distinction: every FUEL tool uses a brushless motor, but a brushless tool is not necessarily a FUEL model. See Milwaukee’s M18 FUEL technology overview.
Does FUEL automatically mean a tool performs better?
No single label settles which tool is best for a particular job. Milwaukee uses strong performance language for FUEL, but that is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent finding that every FUEL tool outperforms every non-FUEL brushless tool in every task. Compare named models and their specifications for the work you need to do.
#1 Best Overall
- Auto-Stop Control Mode, Enhanced Safety
- POWERSTATE Brushless Motor delivers the power to complete the widest range of applications of any drill driver
- Fastest Drilling and Driving applications under load
- Mechanical Clutch for consistency in driving a wide range of fasteners
- LED light for better visibility in low-light situations
Examples: FUEL across different tool types
M18 FUEL 1/2-inch drill driver, model 2803-20
Milwaukee lists this model’s POWERSTATE brushless motor, REDLINK PLUS intelligence, M18 battery compatibility, 1,200 in-lb peak torque, and a speed range of 0–550 / 0–2,000 RPM. Those figures describe the 2803-20 as listed by Milwaukee; they are not general specifications for all FUEL drills or brushless tools. Check the 2803-20 product page for model details.
M18 FUEL oscillating multi-tool, model 2836-20
Milwaukee also describes the 2836-20 oscillating multi-tool as using a POWERSTATE brushless motor and REDLINK PLUS intelligence. This example shows that FUEL is used across different tool categories; it does not make drill specifications or performance claims transferable to a multi-tool. See the 2836-20 product page.
Rank #2
- Most powerful compact drill driver in its class
- 6.9" in length for access into tight spaces and reduced fatigue
- Fastest drilling and driving applications under load
How to compare the tools you might buy
Compare specific models rather than treating “FUEL” and “brushless” as competing, mutually exclusive categories. Check the current product listing for each item and weigh the factors that affect your job and purchase:

- Battery platform and compatibility: Confirm compatibility for the exact model and battery. For example, Milwaukee states that the 2803-20 drill driver is compatible with M18 batteries; that does not establish compatibility for every Milwaukee tool and battery.
- Size and weight: Check the individual product details if portability, overhead work, or handling matters.
- Bare tool or kit: Verify whether the listing includes a battery and charger, and what else is in the kit.
- Price and availability: Compare current listings. They change over time, and no current price comparison is established here.
What the label cannot tell you
The FUEL name identifies Milwaukee’s system, not a universal performance score. It does not, on its own, tell you which of two tools will be the better fit, whether their dimensions suit your work, what a particular retail kit contains, or whether your existing battery is compatible. Those answers depend on the exact model and listing.
