Move MinIO data to Predastore by building and testing a separate destination, copying and verifying each bucket, stopping writes for a final sync, and then switching clients. This is a staged migration—not an in-place conversion of MinIO’s storage format. Keep MinIO available in read-only form while you validate the new service.
What to check before migrating
Start with the operations and behaviors your applications actually use. Predastore documents common S3 operations, including basic bucket and object operations, multipart uploads, Signature V4, and presigned URLs. That does not establish support for every MinIO-specific behavior or every operation an SDK might call. Review the Predastore README and its compatibility information, then test representative requests from your own clients against a test destination.

- Inventory buckets, approximate object counts and sizes, application SDKs, region and signing settings, and credentials or policies.
- Identify dependencies on version history, object lock or retention, lifecycle rules, notifications, and presigned URLs.
- Check network routes, destination endpoint and TLS requirements, available free space, and the recovery window you need.
- Decide how destination identities and permissions will work before copying data; the access model differs between standalone Predastore and Spinifex.
Choose standalone Predastore or Spinifex

These distinctions and layout cautions are described in Mulga’s migration guide and the Predastore project documentation. Spinifex is not a blind policy import: the guide lists unsupported elements such as NotAction and NotResource, some condition operators and keys, policy variables, and MinIO-specific admin:* and kms:* actions. Adapt policies and test effective permissions; users may also need new credentials.

Install and configure the chosen deployment
Follow the vendor’s deployment instructions for the selected standalone or Spinifex arrangement. For standalone, the guide covers a Linux systemd service, service account and directories, region, TLS and at-rest encryption material, and data/parity settings. Distributed deployment uses a cluster configuration with host and node roles. Set the region to match client expectations and keep the destination’s HTTPS endpoint and certificate trust ready for testing.

Choose the Reed–Solomon [rs] layout before writing objects: the guide warns that it cannot be changed after objects have been written. Confirm free capacity for the topology you selected, including room for resynchronization. The guide estimates that standalone setups need roughly the current MinIO data amount free again on each drive, plus that headroom; this is a planning estimate, not a universal capacity formula. Spinifex layouts described in the guide may use one selected drive per machine, so do not assume the same capacity or drive-failure tolerance as a multi-drive standalone layout.
If reusing MinIO drives, isolate the new data directory
The guide allows reuse of existing drives by putting Predastore data in a separate directory and bind-mounting it under Predastore’s writable data path. Follow its directory naming instructions exactly: MinIO treats other top-level directories on its drives as buckets, so an incorrectly placed or named Predastore directory risks being treated as bucket data. Do not let MinIO and Predastore write to the same data directory.

Test the empty Predastore before copying
Use a test bucket and the same kinds of clients or SDKs that production uses. Verify that HTTPS certificate trust and authentication work, that the configured region agrees with the client, and that bucket creation, listing, and deletion and representative object operations succeed. A successful listing alone does not rule out a region mismatch. Configure clients for path-style addressing when connecting to Predastore, as specified by the vendor guide.
Recreate access and permissions
Standalone credentials
For standalone deployments, add application keys using the configuration described in the vendor guide. Treat each configured key as full access to every bucket. If a MinIO application depended on a policy that limited its access, a standalone key is not an equivalent replacement; choose an access model that can meet the requirement before moving that workload.

Spinifex identities and policies
Map users, groups, and policies deliberately. Review each policy for unsupported actions, elements, conditions, or variables, then test allowed and denied requests using the credentials that the application will actually use. Do not infer that a policy has preserved its effective permissions merely because it was accepted or imported.
Copy named buckets and verify their contents
The migration guide recommends rclone configured with both object-storage endpoints, credentials, matching regions, and path-style addressing for Predastore. Create or confirm the destination bucket and run a bucket-scoped operation for each bucket. Replace BUCKET with a real bucket name and the remote names with those in your rclone configuration:

- Preview the operation:
rclone sync minio:BUCKET predastore:BUCKET --checksum --metadata --dry-run. Review what rclone proposes before proceeding. - Copy the bucket: run the same command without
--dry-run. - Compare object contents:
rclone check minio:BUCKET predastore:BUCKET --download. The download check reads content for comparison and may take time and bandwidth proportional to the data checked. - Compare counts and sizes: check the source and destination bucket totals as a separate sanity check, and investigate discrepancies before moving on.
rclone sync can remove objects that exist only at the destination. Keep it scoped to the named bucket—never run it against a remote root—and use the dry run when uncertain. The guide’s --metadata option is not proof that every MinIO feature or metadata type has been preserved.

- Quiesce MinIO writes. Put applications into maintenance mode or otherwise prevent writes to the source while retaining a consistent final-copy point.
- Run a final bucket-scoped sync. Repeat the sync for each bucket to capture changes made during the initial copy, then compare counts and sizes again.
- Update client settings. Change the endpoint to Predastore’s HTTPS address, configure its certificate trust, region, path-style addressing, and the correct credentials.
- Replace endpoint-bound links. Regenerate presigned URLs: existing ones still address MinIO’s host.
- Validate production behavior. Test application reads and writes and the S3 operations identified in your inventory before declaring the cutover complete.
Keep MinIO running read-only during the validation period so it remains available for recovery. Retire it only after you are satisfied that the destination has the required data and production behavior is sound.

Plan separately for features a basic object copy may not carry
The documented rclone procedure copies objects and selected metadata, but the migration guide does not claim that it transfers MinIO version history, object lock, lifecycle rules, notification configuration, or every kind of metadata. MinIO’s documentation also says mc mirror does not carry versions or metadata. If any of these capabilities matter, treat them as separate migration requirements: identify what must be retained, determine an appropriate method for the specific feature, and verify the result before retiring MinIO. Do not treat a matching current-object count as proof that historical versions or configuration have moved.
Predastore is described by its project as S3-compatible, but the project’s README directs users to operation coverage and compatibility results rather than promising universal MinIO parity. The migration guide also notes that Predastore is a young project and that design decisions may change. Reassess the documented support and test your workload before committing to the move.
