Middle Mouse Button Not Working on YouTube? 9 Ways to Troubleshoot It

Middle-clicking a YouTube video link should commonly open it in a background tab. Use these nine checks to find whether the target, mouse, browser, or an extension is responsible.

If middle-click is not working on YouTube, first check what you are clicking: middle-clicking a video title or thumbnail link commonly opens that link in a background tab, while clicking the video player or an empty area may do something different. Test the same mouse on an ordinary link elsewhere, then check the browser and extensions. Use Ctrl-click or the context menu as a workaround while diagnosing; replace the mouse only if tests point to a hardware problem.

What should middle-click do on YouTube?

Middle-click is a browser gesture, not a universal YouTube player command. Clicking a video link commonly opens it in a new background tab. Google’s Chrome team described this behavior in 2009 as opening a clicked link in a new tab in the background (Chrome Blog). GNOME Help likewise says middle-clicking a link opens it in a new tab in most web browsers (GNOME Help).

A video’s playback area, its controls, and blank page space are not necessarily links, so they need not respond like a title or thumbnail. Also distinguish the action you want: opening a video link in a new tab, closing a tab, and auto-scrolling are separate behaviors.

Try these nine troubleshooting steps

Use one consistent test throughout: middle-click a visible video title or thumbnail link. Change one thing at a time so you can tell which change affects the result.

  1. Click an actual video link. Test a visible title or thumbnail, not the player controls or an empty area. A link is the relevant target when checking whether the browser opens a video in a tab.
  2. Check that the wheel press registers. Press straight down on the scroll wheel without rolling it. GNOME Help notes that on many mice this is how to middle-click; supported touchpads may offer a configured three-finger tap, and some setups support pressing left and right buttons together (GNOME Help).
  3. Test an ordinary link outside YouTube. Try a link on another site and, if possible, test middle-click in another application. If it fails broadly, investigate the mouse, input mapping, or connection before focusing on YouTube.
  4. Reconnect or cross-test the mouse. Reconnect a wired mouse or its wireless receiver where practical, then test again. If available, try another mouse. These are isolation tests, not guaranteed fixes; one Mozilla Support user reported that reconnecting a mouse restored middle-click (Mozilla Support).
  5. Use a workaround while testing. Ctrl-click the video link, or right-click it and choose “Open Link in New Tab.” Chrome documents Ctrl-click as a way to open a link in a new tab; menu wording can vary by browser (Chrome Blog; Mozilla Support).
  6. Inspect Firefox’s middle-click preferences if the issue is Firefox-specific. Mozilla Support documentation identifies browser.tabs.opentabfor.middleclick and middlemouse.openNewWindow as preferences that affect middle-click behavior (Mozilla Support). These are advanced, version-sensitive settings. Inspect them carefully and avoid changing unrelated preferences; do not assume either value is the cause without comparing behavior.
  7. Temporarily disable relevant extensions. Turn off extensions that modify YouTube, mouse gestures, scrolling, tabs, or links, then repeat the same link test. If it starts working, re-enable extensions one at a time to find the interaction. A 2024 issue report for Firefox 125.0.3 and Improve YouTube 4.805 described middle-button smooth scrolling not working on the video player; it is one user report, not proof of a general YouTube defect (GitHub issue).
  8. Compare another browser or a clean profile. If the same mouse and link work in another browser or a clean profile, focus on settings and extensions in the affected browser. If the result is identical across browsers, revisit the input-device tests.
  9. Repair or replace hardware only after isolating it. If another mouse works while the original fails on ordinary links across sites and applications, the original device or its mapping is a stronger suspect. A replacement may be appropriate then; a failure confined to YouTube or one browser is not, by itself, a reason to buy another mouse.

Choose the next test based on where it fails

What you observe What to check next
Middle-click fails on other sites and in other applications Check the mouse button mapping and connection, then cross-test another mouse.
It opens links elsewhere but not YouTube video links Confirm the click target is a video link; compare another browser or profile and temporarily disable relevant extensions.
It works on YouTube links but not in the video player Check whether the desired action is supported in that player context, then investigate player-related settings or extensions. The cited extension report is a single case, not evidence of a general fault.
You need to open the video now Ctrl-click the link or use the context menu’s “Open Link in New Tab” option.

These comparisons help separate an input-device issue from browser or page-specific behavior. No published statistic in the cited help, support, and issue material establishes how often this symptom occurs or which cause is most common.
