A micro virtual machine (microVM) is a virtual machine built with a deliberately small virtual machine monitor (VMM) and a limited device model. It keeps a VM-style isolation boundary while trimming features to reduce overhead and support fast startup. MicroVMs are often used for workloads such as functions, containers, and short-lived jobs, but “micro” is a design approach—not a universal size limit or a guarantee that all microVMs work the same way.
How a microVM works
A VMM creates and manages virtual machines. In the prominent open-source Firecracker implementation, the VMM uses Linux KVM, the kernel’s virtualization facility, to run guest machines. Each guest has its own operating-system environment; a microVM is not simply a container with a different name.

Firecracker keeps the virtual machine model intentionally minimal. It omits many general-purpose VM features and limits the devices it emulates. That smaller design is intended to reduce resource use and attack surface and help workloads start quickly. The Firecracker project describes its design as combining the isolation properties of traditional VMs with the speed and resource efficiency associated with containers; that is the project’s characterization, not a guarantee that every security or performance concern disappears.
MicroVMs and containers are not the same
The key difference is the isolation boundary. Firecracker microVMs use hardware virtualization through KVM. Containers typically isolate processes while sharing the host operating-system kernel. Containers can be efficient, but sharing a kernel is a different model from running a guest operating system inside a VM.
#1 Best Overall
| Aspect | Firecracker microVM | Container | General-purpose VM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isolation model | VM boundary using KVM | Process isolation based on the host kernel | VM boundary; implementation varies by platform |
| Machine features | Minimal device model and fewer features | Uses host kernel interfaces rather than a full virtual hardware model | Often supports a broader set of devices and guest features |
| Typical design fit | Isolated, often transient workloads where a compact VM is useful | Efficiently packaging and running applications that can use the host kernel | Workloads needing broader guest OS or device compatibility |
These are general distinctions, not a claim that one option is always safer or faster. Isolation depends on the implementation and its configuration, and VM isolation does not eliminate security risk.
Why keep a microVM deliberately small?
A narrower machine model can make it practical to create many isolated environments for workloads that do not need a full set of virtual hardware. AWS says Firecracker was developed for high-density, multi-tenant services, including AWS Lambda and AWS Fargate. Such workloads can include serverless functions and container workloads that benefit from a VM boundary without requiring every feature of a conventional VM.

- Efficient Intel i5 Processing – Powered by an Intel Core i5-7500T (2.7GHz, Quad-Core) for smooth multitasking, fast processing, and reliable performance.
- Optimized Memory & Storage – Includes 8GB DDR4 RAM for efficient multitasking and a 256GB SSD for fast boot times and application loading.

The trade-off is compatibility. AWS’s Firecracker launch explanation says it does not support graphics, accelerators, hardware passthrough, or most legacy devices. Those are Firecracker-specific limitations, not requirements for every technology described as a microVM. A workload that needs those capabilities may be a better fit for a broader VM platform.

There is no single industry-wide microVM size specification in the cited project documentation. Firecracker’s design document says a microVM can be configured with up to 32 vCPUs and chosen memory. That is a Firecracker capability described by its project documentation; it is not a cross-vendor definition or a promise that a particular service exposes that maximum.

Likewise, a small footprint or fast launch is an implementation goal, not a universal measured result. In its 2018 launch article, AWS reported about 5 MiB of memory overhead per Firecracker microVM and launch times as low as 125 ms. These are historical AWS figures from the implementation at launch, not current independent benchmarks or general guarantees for all microVMs.

MicroVMs are suited to cases where a service needs to start isolated environments for many workloads, especially workloads that may be brief or created per user or session. AWS’s June 2026 announcement describes Lambda MicroVMs as a serverless compute primitive for isolated, stateful execution environments, including execution of user- or AI-generated code. AWS says each session runs in its own Firecracker microVM and describes snapshots and rapid resume. Those lifecycle features belong to that AWS service example; they should not be assumed for every microVM platform.
