Microsoft’s New Outlook Classic-Inspired Theme Changes the Look, Not the App

The classic-inspired setting makes New Outlook look more familiar, but it does not turn the WebView2-based app into classic Outlook or restore unsupported features.

Microsoft’s classic-inspired appearance option makes New Outlook look more like classic Outlook, but it does not turn it into classic Outlook or change its underlying Windows architecture. New Outlook for Windows is a WebView2-based application integrated with Windows; the Outlook web experience supplies its core interface. The option changes styling and some interactions, not feature compatibility.

What the classic-inspired setting changes

A reproduced Microsoft 365 Message Center notice, item MC1458476, describes an optional setting for Outlook on the web and New Outlook for Windows that makes the experience more closely resemble classic Outlook. It coordinates changes to visual styling, layout, typography, icons, and selected interactions. The setting does not modify classic Outlook itself, mailbox data, permissions, organizational settings, or existing functionality, and it does not override administrator migration controls. The archived notice says the setting would be off by default for most users, although some people moving from classic Outlook might receive it enabled. Its reported schedule placed Targeted Release worldwide from mid-August through late September 2026, followed by general availability from late September through late October 2026. Those dates come from the archived reproduction; availability can vary by user or tenant, and the archive is not a canonical Microsoft notice. Is New Outlook a native Windows app?

The word “native” needs qualification. Microsoft describes New Outlook as a Windows application, but its documented architecture is not the traditional native Win32 implementation associated with classic Outlook. Microsoft says the app runs the Outlook web experience through WebView2 inside a Native Windows Integration Component. The web experience provides the interface; the Windows component connects it with local resources such as notifications and files. Microsoft’s own wording is: “As highlighted earlier, new Outlook is a native application, based on WebView2.” Microsoft: Overview of the new Outlook for Windows

So it is imprecise to say Microsoft did not build a Windows app at all. It did build and package one for Windows, but it is web-based under the hood rather than a conventional Win32 client. The classic-inspired setting affects the experience’s appearance; it does not replace that architecture. Microsoft documents MSIX as the delivery package and also describes deployment through setup.exe, winget, or manual and scripted methods. Microsoft: Overview of the new Outlook for Windows

Does the theme restore classic Outlook features?

No. Familiar appearance does not establish feature parity. Microsoft maintains a separate feature comparison by client, last updated September 23, 2026, and notes that some capabilities require a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription. One clear difference: VBA macros are listed as available in classic Outlook and unsupported in New Outlook. Check the comparison against the tasks you rely on—especially automation, add-ins, and specialized workflows—before changing clients. How New Outlook is deployed in Windows

Microsoft’s deployment guidance lists support for Windows 10 Version 2004 (Build 19041) or higher and Windows Server 2022 (20348.2402) or higher; Windows Server 2016 and 2019 are unsupported. Microsoft says new deployments of Microsoft 365 desktop client apps from Version 2502 include New Outlook by default and documents installing it side by side with classic Outlook. Organizations that depend on classic-only capabilities can use side-by-side deployment while assessing the newer client. Requirements and deployment defaults can change, so administrators should consult Microsoft’s current guidance. Microsoft: Deployment overview for the new Outlook for Windows
