Microsoft documents the feature for Edge 111 and later, although the setting and default behavior can change as development and testing continue.
What Enhanced Security Mode does
Microsoft describes Enhanced Security Mode as protection for browsing unfamiliar websites. In that mode, Edge runs qualifying sites without JIT compilation. JIT normally converts portions of website code into optimized machine code while a page runs; removing that compilation path is intended to reduce the attack surface available to an exploit.

On Windows, Microsoft also lists three relevant mitigations:

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Hardware-enforced Stack Protection, which helps protect return addresses used during program execution.
- Arbitrary Code Guard (ACG), which restricts the creation of executable code in protected processes.
- Control Flow Guard (CFG), which helps prevent unexpected execution paths.
These controls are defense-in-depth measures, not a guarantee that a malicious page cannot compromise a device. Microsoft has not published an effectiveness percentage or an adoption statistic for Enhanced Security Mode.

How to turn it on in Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge and select Settings and more (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Settings.
- Open Privacy, search, and services.
- Find the security section and enable Enhanced security mode (the exact wording or placement can change between Edge releases).
Microsoft says some users may see the feature enabled by default while it conducts development and testing. If the control is missing, update Edge and check the current settings layout; availability can also vary by platform, policy, or staged rollout.
What administrators can control
Organizations can configure Enhanced Security Mode through Microsoft Edge Group Policy. Administrators can create allow lists and deny lists, so the mode can be enforced for selected sites or disabled for applications that are not compatible. This is more precise than making every employee use the same setting: high-risk or unknown destinations can receive the stricter policy, while a business-critical application can have a documented exception.

Compatibility: when an exception may be needed
Microsoft warns that WebAssembly performance might not meet expectations in Enhanced Security Mode. That warning applies to affected applications, not automatically to every website or every user. WebAssembly-heavy software may run more slowly or behave differently when the relevant site is protected.

Do not disable the protection globally just because one application needs different treatment.

How this differs from other Edge security controls
Several Edge announcements use security language, but they do different jobs. The distinctions matter when deciding what to enable or what an organization is evaluating.
| Feature | Primary purpose | Scope and configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Enhanced Security Mode | Reduces exploit attack surface on unfamiliar sites by disabling JIT there and using additional mitigations. | Consumer setting in Privacy, search, and services; organizations can manage it with Group Policy and site lists. |
| HTTPS-First Mode | Improves connection security by upgrading to HTTPS when possible and warning when a site does not support HTTPS. | Addresses the transport connection, not the browser’s code-execution surface. |
| Edge for Business security connectors | Adds enterprise visibility, policy enforcement, and security-stack integration. | Organizational capability; not hardware required to activate Edge’s built-in consumer setting. |
Microsoft’s March 23, 2026 RSAC announcement described additional Edge for Business controls for AI usage and sensitive data. A separate August 4, 2026 announcement described integrations with enterprise security partners, including Cisco Secure Access and Tanium. Those announcements should not be treated as another name for Enhanced Security Mode.

Enterprise hardening and Edge updates
Microsoft’s August 25, 2026 security baseline for Edge 151, updated August 31, listed six new recommendations and one additional setting for organizations to evaluate. That is version-specific baseline guidance, not a measurement of Enhanced Security Mode’s effectiveness and not a consumer requirement.
Microsoft also announced on June 11, 2026 that Stable would move to a two-week release cycle beginning with Edge 152, while Extended Stable would receive updates every fourth release—approximately every eight weeks. Because that was a dated schedule announcement, organizations should verify the current release calendar before setting maintenance expectations. Keeping Edge current remains important because security fixes and policy behavior arrive through browser updates.

A practical setup checklist
- Use Edge 111 or later, then confirm the current setting label in Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services.
- Enable Enhanced Security Mode for general browsing, especially where users regularly visit unfamiliar domains.
- Test WebAssembly-dependent business applications before enforcing the setting broadly.
- Use narrowly scoped Group Policy allow and deny lists for exceptions.
- Keep HTTPS-First Mode separate: it protects the connection, while Enhanced Security Mode targets exploit techniques in page execution.
- Review enterprise baseline and connector announcements independently from the consumer setting.
What Microsoft’s wording means for readers
Microsoft says, “Microsoft Edge is adding enhanced security protections to provide an extra layer of protection when browsing the web and visiting unfamiliar sites.” In practical terms, that means a built-in, configurable defense that can make some attacks harder—not a replacement for software updates, cautious browsing, or an organization’s other security controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Enhanced Security Mode available on every Edge installation?
Microsoft documents the feature for Edge version 111 and later, but availability, default status, and the settings interface can vary as Microsoft changes the feature and tests deployments.
Will Enhanced Security Mode make every website slower?
No universal slowdown is established. Microsoft specifically warns that WebAssembly performance might not meet expectations for affected sites; a site-specific exception may resolve that compatibility issue.
Do I need special security hardware to use it?
No. Enhanced Security Mode is built into Edge. Enterprise connectors and security products announced for Edge for Business are separate organizational integrations.
The Bottom Line
For most Edge users, Enhanced Security Mode is the relevant “extra layer”: enable it in Privacy, search, and services, then use tightly scoped exceptions if a WebAssembly-based site has a verified problem.
