Microsoft’s Browser-in-Browser Patent Does Not Confirm Chrome Inside Edge

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: Microsoft has a granted patent for hosting one browser inside another, but the patent does not establish that the Google Chrome application is embedded in Edge or that a Chrome-in-Edge feature is available. It describes a compatibility system in which a first browser can call a second browser to render a page inside the first browser’s tab.

What Microsoft actually patented

The patent is titled “Systems and methods for hosting a browser within another browser.” U.S. Patent No. 12,204,740 was assigned to Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLC, filed on August 8, 2022, and granted on January 21, 2025. It lists an earlier priority claim to a provisional application filed June 7, 2019. Read the patent record and description.

Its core design has a first browser hosting a second browser in one of the first browser’s tabs. A compatibility manager receives a navigation request and determines which browser should render the destination.

  1. The first browser opens its normal window and tab.
  2. A user or application requests a URL.
  3. A compatibility list or another decision mechanism checks whether the first browser can handle that page.
  4. If it can, the first browser renders the page normally.
  5. If it cannot, the system invokes a second browser instance under the first browser’s control.
  6. The second browser’s ordinary visible window is suppressed.
  7. The second browser renders the page while the first browser presents the tab, controls and surrounding interface.
  8. If navigation later returns to content the first browser supports, control can switch back.

The description also addresses a host-browser interface, a multi-browser tab manager, render engines, browser helper objects, extensions, navigation history, URL display and security indicators. “Hosted” therefore means coordinated operation behind one interface; it does not necessarily mean that the second browser has been rewritten into the first.

Does the patent name Google Chrome?

No. The examined patent language uses generic “first browser” and “second browser” terminology. It names Gecko, WebKit, Trident/MSHTML and Blink as examples of browser engines. Blink is used by both Google Chrome and modern Microsoft Edge, but naming a shared engine is not the same as naming the Chrome product as the embedded browser. The patent text is here.

Chrome is one theoretical implementation of the second browser, but the document does not prove that Microsoft selected Chrome, is embedding Google’s distribution, or plans to expose a Chrome tab inside Edge. Claims that Microsoft is secretly putting Chrome in Edge, that Chrome tabs are imminent, or that Edge will be replaced by Chrome go beyond the evidence.

How the proposed system would work

                      ↓
              Render through host tab

The patent contemplates hiding the second browser’s normal window and passing rendered content and contextual information back to the host. A user could see one address bar, tab strip and navigation history even though another process or rendering component is doing the page work. The host may also need to synchronize URLs, security information, history, pop-ups, downloads and tab changes.

Why Chrome is being mentioned

Modern Edge and Chrome share the open-source Chromium foundation and Blink rendering technology. Microsoft describes Edge as built on the same underlying technology as Chrome, and its November 4, 2019 launch announcement described the new Edge as using the Chromium web engine. Microsoft’s Edge (Chromium) explanation and the 2019 launch announcement explain that relationship.

That shared foundation improves website and extension compatibility, but Edge remains a separate product with its own interface, account integration, policies, privacy controls and Microsoft features. Sharing Chromium is not the same as running the Chrome application inside Edge.

Technology What it does Chrome inside Edge?
Chromium-based Edge Uses Chromium/Blink technology also used by Chrome No
Chrome extensions in Edge Allows many compatible extensions to run in Edge No
Edge IE mode Runs Internet Explorer-compatible legacy content within Edge No; it is an IE compatibility mode
Microsoft’s patent Describes a first browser hosting a second browser or engine in a tab Potentially similar in concept, but Chrome is not identified
Separate Chrome installation Runs Google Chrome as its own application No

How this differs from Internet Explorer mode

Edge’s IE mode is an existing feature for sites that require legacy Internet Explorer behavior. Modern pages continue to use the Chromium-based Edge engine, while designated legacy pages use the IE-compatible environment. Microsoft documented that compatibility approach when preparing sites for the Chromium-based Edge. See Microsoft’s IE-mode guidance.

  • In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.

The patent is broader in concept. It describes a general first-browser/second-browser framework, compatibility decisions and switching between renderers. It may be useful for similar compatibility goals, but the patent does not establish that it is a replacement for IE mode or merely a newly discovered description of that feature.

Can you open Chrome inside Edge today?

There is no verified normal Edge setting that embeds a separately installed Google Chrome application as an Edge tab. Today you can:

  • Install and run Edge and Chrome as separate applications.
  • Rely on Edge’s Chromium compatibility for sites built and tested for Chrome-like behavior.
  • Install many Chrome extensions in Edge, subject to each extension’s compatibility and permissions.
  • Use IE mode where an organization has configured it for supported legacy sites.
  • Use Chromium-oriented developer tools and automation against Edge.

For example, Microsoft’s Edge developer documentation shows Chrome DevTools MCP being configured to launch or connect to Edge by targeting the Edge executable. That demonstrates Chromium ecosystem compatibility, not Chrome being embedded in Edge. See the Edge DevTools MCP instructions.

Why an enterprise might want browser hosting

The strongest rationale in the patent is compatibility management rather than a consumer “Chrome mode.” Organizations may have intranet systems, regulated applications or older web software tied to a particular engine or browser version. A host browser could keep one user-facing window while selecting a suitable renderer for each destination.

  • Legacy and specialized applications: Keep older systems usable without asking staff to switch applications manually.
  • Centralized administration: Present one shell for policies, navigation and support while accommodating different web environments.
  • Reduced context switching: Users could follow links without launching a visibly separate browser.
  • Unified navigation: The design contemplates presenting the active URL, security information and history through the controlling browser.

These are use cases implied by the patent, not a Microsoft announcement of a product roadmap.

Costs and risks of a browser-within-browser design

Resources

A hidden second browser can still mean another process, renderer and memory footprint. The patent discusses closing the secondary browser when it is no longer needed to free memory and reduce processor demand, indicating that resource overhead matters.

Security and privacy boundaries

Different browser instances may apply different sandboxing, certificate handling, extension rules, enterprise policies, cookies and storage. A unified visual shell could make those boundaries less visible, so administrators would need clear indicators and controls.

Extensions and identity

An Edge extension would not automatically control content rendered by a separately hosted browser. Profiles, sign-in state and privacy protections might also differ. The patent mentions extensions and helper objects, but it does not guarantee cross-boundary extension behavior.

Navigation and compatibility errors

Synchronizing address bars, history, security indicators, pop-ups, downloads and new tabs would be complex. A compatibility list could also choose the wrong renderer, causing broken authentication, inconsistent cookies, changed rendering behavior or difficult troubleshooting.

A patent is not a product announcement

A granted patent protects claimed inventions subject to applicable law; it does not prove that a feature has shipped, is in active development or will ever reach users. The January 21, 2025 grant date confirms the legal status of the invention, not the availability of a Chrome-in-Edge toggle. No reviewed Microsoft documentation announces such a consumer feature.

Verdict

The patent is real, and its browser-within-browser architecture is more sophisticated than the headline suggests. It could theoretically host Chrome or another engine inside an Edge-like shell, but the document does not identify Google Chrome as the second browser. Modern Edge’s Chromium foundation, Chrome-extension compatibility and IE mode are separate technologies. For users in September 2026, Chrome and Edge remain separate applications; “Chrome inside Edge” is an interpretive headline, not a confirmed feature.
