What “Quotation Marks not working” usually means in Word
People use this phrase to describe a few different failures. Identify your symptom before changing anything major.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Smart quotes stopped: typing
'and"no longer turns them into curly quotes like “ ” and ‘ ’. - Wrong characters inserted: the keys produce something else (for example, different punctuation, box characters, or a different quote style).
- Quotes appear but look broken: quotation marks show as squares/empty boxes, or the font renders punctuation incorrectly.
- Quotes revert after paste: Word keeps the pasted straight quotes instead of converting them, or conversion behaves inconsistently in certain parts of the document.
Quick checks (do these first)
Before you dig into settings, verify whether the problem is limited to one document or the whole Word app.

- Create a new document: File > New (Windows) or File > New (macOS).
- Type a short sentence with quotes:
He said, "Hello."andIt's fine. - Paste the same text from a web page or Notes app and see whether quotes behave differently.
- Confirm the text language: highlight a paragraph and check that it’s not set to an unexpected language (this affects punctuation rules).
If the new document has correct quotes, the issue is likely template/document-specific formatting. If the new document is broken too, the cause is almost always settings, keyboard input, add-ins, or Word installation state.
Fix 1: Turn Smart Quotes back on (Windows + macOS)
Smart Quotes are what make Word convert straight quotes into curly quotation marks automatically.
Windows Word
- Open File > Options.
- Select Proofing.
- Click AutoCorrect Options….
- Go to the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
- Check Use smart quotes (wording can vary slightly).
- Click OK to close both dialog boxes.
macOS Word
- Open Word menu > Settings… (or Preferences… depending on version).
- Go to Spelling & Grammar.
- Find the AutoCorrect or Autoformat settings section.
- Enable Smart quotes.
- Close the settings window and retest in a new document.
If your Smart Quotes toggle was off, this change usually fixes the problem immediately.

Fix 2: Repair AutoCorrect / proofing settings
Even with Smart Quotes enabled, AutoCorrect can be customized in ways that interfere with punctuation conversion.
Windows Word: review the AutoCorrect punctuation rules
- File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options…
- On the AutoCorrect tab, ensure punctuation-related entries aren’t causing replacements you don’t expect.
- Click Restore Defaults if you’ve previously customized many entries (you may lose custom replacements).
- Confirm Use smart quotes is still enabled on AutoFormat As You Type.
macOS Word: reset AutoCorrect behavior
- Open Word > Settings/Preferences.
- Go to Spelling & Grammar > AutoCorrect.
- Look for an option to restore defaults or reset behavior.
- Re-enable Smart Quotes and retest.
If you’re in an organization (school/work) with policy-managed Office settings, some options may be locked or overridden.

Fix 3: Confirm language + keyboard layout
Quotation behavior is affected by what language Word thinks it’s writing, and by the keyboard/IME you’re using.
Windows: check input method and Office language
- Check your Windows keyboard layout: click the language indicator in the taskbar (for example, EN) and confirm it matches your expected layout.
- If you use an IME (Japanese/Chinese/Korean), temporarily switch to a plain English/US keyboard and retest.
- In Word: Review > Language > Set Proofing Language… and ensure the correct language is selected for the paragraph.
macOS: check keyboard source
- Open System Settings > Keyboard > Input Sources.
- Switch to your standard keyboard (for example, US) instead of an IME.
- In Word, set proofing language for the paragraph if it’s wrong: highlight text > Tools > Language.
If the quote keys work in a blank document but not in your document, language formatting or a conflicting text style may be involved.
Fix 4: Check document formatting and input method conflicts
Sometimes the issue isn’t Word’s Smart Quotes setting—it’s the content you’re typing into or the way a text control is receiving input.
- Text boxes and shapes: try typing directly into the page body, not only inside a text box.
- Track Changes: if changes are being applied, Smart Quotes may appear inconsistent between original and revised text.
- Field codes: content created via fields (like citations) might keep straight quotes.
- Paste formatting: paste “Keep Text Only” and retest to see if formatting is overriding quotation behavior.
Fix 5: Test in Safe Mode and disable add-ins
Add-ins can intercept typing and punctuation formatting. Safe Mode helps confirm whether a plugin is the culprit.
Windows: start Word in Safe Mode
- Close Word.
- Press Win + R.
- Type:
winword /safeand press Enter. - Test quotation marks in the Safe Mode instance.
If quotes work in Safe Mode, disable add-ins:
- File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins and click Go….
- Uncheck all add-ins and retest.
- Re-enable one by one until you find the offender.
macOS: disable add-ins
- Quit Word.
- Open Word’s add-in or preferences area (often under Word > Settings/Preferences).
- Disable third-party add-ins and restart Word.
- Retest quotes in a new document.
Fix 6: Create a clean template and retest
Word templates can store formatting rules that affect punctuation and AutoCorrect behavior.

- Create a new document based on a different template: choose File > New.
- Prefer a basic blank template (not one you’ve customized heavily).
- Retest quotation marks typing and pasting.
- If it works in a new template, migrate content gradually: copy one paragraph at a time from the broken document into the clean one.
If the quotes break only after you paste or after copying certain text styles, the likely cause is formatting in that content—not global Word settings.
Fix 7: Use direct insertion methods (workaround)
If Smart Quotes won’t behave right now, you can insert the correct quotation marks explicitly. This avoids formatting surprises and works regardless of AutoCorrect.
Windows and macOS: Insert Symbol
- Place your cursor where you want the quote.
- Go to Insert > Symbol (or Insert > Advanced Symbol).
- Choose curly quotes:
| Character | Common Unicode | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Left double quotation mark | U+201C |
“ |
| Right double quotation mark | U+201D |
” |
| Left single quotation mark | U+2018 |
‘ |
| Right single quotation mark | U+2019 |
’ |
This is the fastest workaround when you need correct typography for a deadline while you troubleshoot the underlying setting.
Platform-specific notes (Word for the web, Word on Windows, Word on macOS)
Word for the web (in a browser)
Word for the web relies on browser input and its own editor settings. If Smart Quotes are wrong there, the quickest test is to try another browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox) and confirm the browser’s language/keyboard settings match your expected input.
- Try in a new browser session and confirm keyboard layout.
- Copy/paste a sentence with quotes into the web editor and retest.
- If the problem is only in the web version, focus on browser input settings rather than desktop Word options.
Word on Windows desktop
Windows desktop gives you direct control over Smart Quotes and AutoCorrect. Most quotation mark failures on Windows trace back to AutoCorrect Options or an add-in hijacking typing behavior.
Rank #4
- Enable Use smart quotes in AutoCorrect Options.
- Test in
winword /safe. - If Safe Mode fixes it, disable COM add-ins one by one.
Word on macOS desktop
macOS Word versions can label settings slightly differently, but the logic is the same: Smart Quotes must be enabled in the AutoCorrect/Autoformat area, and keyboard input sources can’t be fighting the editor.
- Enable Smart quotes in Word preferences.
- Switch input source to a standard keyboard.
- Disable add-ins if quotes still misbehave.
Common mistakes and gotchas
- Assuming it’s only a “Smart Quotes” issue: add-ins and keyboard/IME conflicts are very common.
- Fixing settings but testing in the same broken doc: always retest in a new blank document.
- Using a font that lacks punctuation: if quotes show as squares, try switching the paragraph font (for example, to a standard font like Calibri) and retest.
- Overriding with pasted formatting: paste without formatting or “Keep Text Only” if you see inconsistent behavior.
- Expecting automatic conversion after you typed long ago: AutoCorrect typically applies going forward, not retroactively.
Troubleshooting flowchart (when the fix doesn’t work)
Use this order. It saves time.
- Does Smart Quotes convert in a brand-new document?
- If no: Fix 1 (Smart Quotes) + Fix 3 (language/keyboard).
- If yes: proceed to Fix 6 (template/document formatting) and Fix 4 (text boxes/styles/paste).
- Does Safe Mode fix it?
- If yes: Fix 5 (disable add-ins).
- If no: re-check AutoCorrect settings and keyboard/IME.
- Are quotes inserting the wrong symbols?
- Switch keyboard layout/input source and retest.
- If the web version works but desktop doesn’t, focus on desktop add-ins and preferences.
- Do quotes display as boxes/squares?
- Change font and try inserting curly quotes via Insert Symbol.
If nothing resolves it, consider repairing Office from the Windows Settings Apps & Features screen, or reinstalling Word on macOS. In practice, Safe Mode + Smart Quotes + keyboard/input source solves most cases.
FAQ
Why does Word keep inserting straight quotes even though Smart Quotes is on?
Two common causes are that you’re pasting content that already contains straight quotes, or the text language/proofing settings differ by paragraph. Paste with “Keep Text Only” and verify the paragraph proofing language (Review > Language on Windows).
Why do quotes work in a new document but not in my current file?
Your document may have inherited different style settings, be using a customized template, or contain special regions like text boxes or fields where formatting behaves differently. Test by copying a single paragraph into a new blank document and see if the issue follows.
Could an add-in be the reason quotation marks stop converting?
Yes. Many grammar, citation, accessibility, or translation add-ins can intercept typing. Running Word in Safe Mode (Windows: winword /safe) is the fastest way to confirm, then disable add-ins until it returns.

What if my quotes appear as empty boxes or weird characters?
This is usually a font or character-encoding issue. Switch to a standard font and insert the correct curly quotes using Insert > Symbol. Unicode values like U+201C and U+201D help you confirm the exact character you’re inserting.
Does Word for the web use the same Smart Quotes settings?
It depends on the browser environment and Word’s web editor configuration. If the problem is limited to Word for the web, try a different browser and check your browser’s language/input settings rather than relying only on desktop Word settings.
Bottom Line
Most cases of Microsoft Word quotation marks not working in 2024 are fixed by enabling Use smart quotes in AutoCorrect options and verifying your proofing language and keyboard layout. If it still fails, Safe Mode and add-in isolation quickly reveal whether a plugin is interfering with typing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you’re in a rush, use Insert > Symbol to place the correct curly quotes directly, then come back to the root cause once the document is typographically correct.
