AutoRecover can create recovery files, while eligible Microsoft 365 documents on OneDrive or SharePoint Online can use AutoSave and version history. That establishes several ways work may persist; it does not prove that every temporary plaintext copy is written to disk—or that unsaved text stays only in memory.
Does Microsoft Word save unsaved text?
It can preserve changes that you have not deliberately saved. AutoRecover is designed to help restore work after Word or another Office app closes unexpectedly. Microsoft says the Document Recovery pane opens the next time you launch the app to help recover recent changes. The feature is distinct from an ordinary manual save. Microsoft’s recovery guidance describes the recovery process.

For eligible cloud documents, AutoSave can save changes as you work, and version history can retain earlier states. These features mean “I did not press Save” is not a reliable way to conclude that edits have no recoverable copy. Microsoft’s support documentation describes these specific mechanisms; it does not inventory every temporary file, cache, operating-system pagefile, crash dump, diagnostic artifact, backup, or enterprise-managed copy that might exist on a particular system.

AutoRecover, AutoSave, and manual saving are different
| Mechanism | What it does | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Manual save | You save the document to its chosen location. | Local or cloud locations, subject to the document and app’s available options. |
| AutoRecover | Creates recovery data intended to help restore work after an unexpected closure. You can configure its interval and location. | Word settings are documented for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016 on Windows and Mac. Exact behavior may depend on version and configuration. |
| AutoSave | Saves changes automatically as you work; Microsoft describes the interval as every few seconds. | Eligible Microsoft 365 files stored on OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online. A local path such as C: does not qualify under Microsoft’s described conditions. |
| Version history | Provides earlier versions of a cloud document. Microsoft says an initial version is created when editing begins, with further entries added periodically—about every 10 minutes. | Eligible cloud documents using AutoSave. Availability depends on file and account conditions. |
The AutoSave intervals and version-history timing above are Microsoft’s product descriptions, not independent measurements. Microsoft also notes that subscription, file type, sync state, opening method, and other limitations can affect AutoSave availability. See Microsoft’s AutoSave overview and instructions for turning on AutoSave.

Where does Word store AutoRecover files?
The location is configurable, and the controls differ by platform. Microsoft lists these paths for the supported Word release families:
- Windows: Open File > Options > Save to review the AutoRecover interval and file location.
- Mac: Open Word > Preferences > Save to review the frequency, and Word > Preferences > File Locations > AutoRecover files to review the location.
For current Mac versions, Microsoft identifies the AutoRecovery folder as /Users/<username>/Library/Containers/com.Microsoft/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery. The folder is hidden in Finder navigation. These settings show where Word’s documented recovery files are handled; changing the location does not establish that other forms of persistence are disabled. See Microsoft’s AutoRecover settings instructions.

Does turning off AutoSave stop AutoRecover?
No. Microsoft distinguishes AutoSave from AutoRecover: AutoSave applies to eligible cloud files, while AutoRecover is a separate recovery feature. Turning off AutoSave therefore does not turn off AutoRecover while a file is open. A local document can still have AutoRecover settings even though it does not qualify for AutoSave under Microsoft’s guidance.
If you are trying to understand whether edits can be recovered, check both the document’s storage location and Word’s AutoRecover settings. A cloud document may also have version history, which is another persistence path.

Does password protection keep text private while you type?
Password protection is a control for a saved Word document, not evidence that in-progress text remains only in memory. Microsoft says to save the document for password protection to take effect. Its guidance also says Word for the web cannot encrypt a document with a password or edit a password-encrypted file. The cited documentation does not say that document encryption controls AutoRecover data or other temporary artifacts. See Microsoft’s password-protection instructions.
What happens if you close a document and choose “Don’t Save”?
Microsoft says that on Mac, choosing Don’t Save deletes the AutoRecover file because Office assumes it is no longer needed. That is a statement about the AutoRecover file, not a secure-erasure guarantee. The support guidance does not describe secure deletion or establish what happens to filesystem snapshots, backups, or other copies.

What this means for memory-only editing
Word’s documented recovery and cloud-save features are enough to rule out a broad assumption that unsaved or recently edited work is necessarily memory-only. They are not enough to support the opposite universal claim that every keystroke is written to disk. The cited Microsoft pages describe selected product features, not a forensic inventory of all storage behavior across Word builds, operating systems, account types, and managed devices.
- If you need to know where Word’s recovery files are configured, inspect the platform-specific AutoRecover controls.
- If the document is in OneDrive or SharePoint Online, check whether AutoSave is active and whether version history is available.
- Do not treat password protection, disabling AutoSave, or choosing “Don’t Save” as proof that all unsaved text has been erased or never persisted.
Microsoft’s support pages cover Word for Microsoft 365 and several perpetual releases, but do not guarantee identical behavior in every build or configuration. For a particular installation, the relevant details include the Word version, operating system, storage location, recovery settings, cloud-sync state, and any organization policies.
