The notice concerns the skin feature—not an announced removal of the Legacy player itself, which Microsoft still lists as an optional Windows feature.
What changes on November 10, 2026?
Microsoft’s Windows Media Player skin documentation states: “Skins will no longer be supported in Windows Media Player Legacy (WMPL) starting November 10, 2026, on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later.” The stated scope is Windows 11 version 24H2 and later; the notice does not say that skin support ends on that date for every Windows version.

Skins are custom interface packages that change the player’s appearance and can change some interaction or behavior within the player’s limits. Microsoft’s notice does not promise that existing skins will continue to load after the cutoff. If a particular skin matters to your workflow, plan for it to stop being supported on the affected Windows versions.
Is Windows Media Player Legacy being removed?
Not according to the cited announcement. It addresses skins, not the Legacy application as a whole. Microsoft Support continues to document Windows Media Player Legacy as an optional feature in Windows 10 and Windows 11. That does not guarantee every feature will behave identically across future Windows releases, but it is distinct from an announcement that the player itself is being removed.

What should people with custom skins do?
- Keep the original files. Save your skin’s
.wmzpackage and, if available, its.wmsdefinition file somewhere outside the player installation. These files preserve the skin assets, but keeping them does not ensure future compatibility. - Note what the skin enables. Record any layout, controls, or interaction changes you rely on. This helps you identify whether a replacement player or workflow can meet the same need.
- Choose a replacement before the cutoff. Test your preferred player with your local media, playlists, and library needs on the Windows version you use. The announcement does not provide a migration tool for converting WMPL skins.
Microsoft describes the Windows Media Player SDK and its skin technology as legacy, superseded by MediaPlayer, and strongly recommends MediaPlayer for new code where possible. For people choosing an app rather than developing one, Microsoft points to the modern Media Player app for current video features such as 4K. Neither recommendation promises that the modern app can import or reproduce existing WMPL skins.

Microsoft Support identifies .wms as a Windows Media Player skin definition file and .wmz as a compressed package that can contain a skin definition, JScript files, and supporting graphics. The skin system dates to Windows Media Player 7.0 and combines scripts, artwork, media, and definition files to change the player’s presentation and interaction.
