When Microsoft Teams stops showing GIFs or images, it’s usually not your hardware—it’s the Teams client failing to load media, a cache/webview issue, a permissions problem, or a network/policy restriction. The fix depends on where the problem shows up: Windows/macOS desktop, iOS/iPadOS, or the web client.
This 2024 troubleshooting guide walks you through reliable, repeatable steps to restore GIFs and images. You’ll also find a symptom-to-solution matrix and an IT/admin checklist in case your tenant policies are blocking media.

What it means when Teams won’t show GIFs or images
In Teams, GIFs and images typically load through a mix of Microsoft services, Teams’ internal webview components, and external media providers (depending on how you insert the GIF). If any of those parts can’t reach the required endpoints or can’t access permissions, you’ll see missing thumbnails, blank placeholders, or files that fail after upload.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
Common user-facing outcomes include: the GIF search returns results but nothing appears, uploaded images show as broken icons, animated GIFs don’t play, or attachments never finish loading.
Quick checks (fastest fixes that solve most cases)
- Hard refresh the chat: close the chat thread and open it again, or restart Teams and return to the same conversation.
- Sign out/in (desktop/mobile): sometimes refreshes auth tokens that affect media fetching.
- Switch networks: test on a different Wi‑Fi or mobile hotspot. If it works, the issue is likely a proxy, firewall, DNS filter, or CDN blocking.
- Try a different GIF source: paste a GIF, search GIFs in the picker, and upload a local image file to compare behavior.
- Check if it’s tenant-wide: ask a coworker on a different device/network. If only you are affected, client cache/permissions is most likely.
Confirm the cause: where the failure happens
Before you start clearing caches or changing settings, identify the stage that breaks. That alone narrows the search dramatically.
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first fix |
|---|---|---|
| GIF search shows results, but GIFs don’t render | Client media loading (webview/cache) or blocked endpoints | Clear Teams cache + test on another network |
| Uploaded images show broken icons | Permissions issue (file/photo access) or corrupted cache | Update Teams + reset cache; check OS permissions |
| Only animated GIFs don’t animate; thumbnails appear | GIF animation blocked, fallback image used, or client rendering limitation | Try a different GIF or convert to MP4; update client |
| Works on desktop, fails on web | Browser permissions/site data or cached web content | Clear Teams site data; try a clean browser profile |
| Works on Wi‑Fi, fails on mobile data (or vice versa) | Network filter, proxy, DNS, or mobile carrier restrictions | Switch network; disable VPN/proxy for test |
Fixes that work on Windows and macOS
The desktop clients use embedded web components (webview). Most “GIF/image not showing” issues boil down to stale cached web content or a client build bug that was fixed in a later release.
Update Microsoft Teams (and restart fully)
Teams updates fast, especially in 2024 when fixes roll frequently. Make sure you’re not stuck on an older build with a media rendering bug.
- Open Teams.
- Go to Settings (profile picture → Settings).
- Find the About or Version area and confirm your build number.
- If an update prompt appears, update and fully restart Teams.
- After restart, test GIFs/images in the same chat.
If you manage Teams deployment (managed device), update via Microsoft 365/endpoint management instead of relying on the in-app updater.
Repair or reset the Teams cache
Clearing cache forces Teams to re-download the web content used to render GIFs and images.
Windows: clear Teams cache
- Close Teams completely.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- End tasks named Teams, and any Teams Web Helper processes.
- Open File Explorer and go to:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams\
- Locate cache folders (commonly
Cache,Code Cache, and/orGPUCache). - Delete the Cache contents, but don’t remove your entire Teams profile directory unless instructed by IT.
- Restart Teams and test again.
If you don’t see obvious cache folders, use the more general approach in the next section (including WebView caches).

- Quit Teams.
- In Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder….
- Open these folders (one at a time) and remove cache contents inside, not your whole app:
~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/
~/Library/Caches/Microsoft/Teams/
- Restart Teams and retest GIFs/images.
Clear cached Teams files (WebView/Cache folders)
Sometimes you need to clear more than the main cache. Teams desktop often stores webview caches separately.

On next launch, Teams re-indexes what it needs. This can fix “stuck loading” media without reinstalling.
Disable problematic proxy/VPN and test again
GIFs and images may load from different domains/CDNs. Corporate proxies that allow Microsoft domains but block media/CDNs can break rendering.
- Temporarily disable your VPN.
- If you use a corporate proxy client, toggle it off for a short test.
- Switch networks (Wi‑Fi ↔ hotspot) and try the GIF picker again.
- If media starts working, report the issue to IT with screenshots and the exact URLs you’re trying to load (if possible).
If you can, confirm whether your network blocks external image CDNs. Even a DNS filter can cause intermittent GIF failures.
Reset Teams permissions inside Windows/macOS
On desktop, Teams can be affected by OS-level permissions related to files or screenshots, especially if you rely on “upload from device” flows.
Windows
- Go to Settings → Privacy & security.
- Check Microphone and Camera only if you use them for sending images.
- For file uploads, also check App permissions and ensure Teams is allowed where applicable.
- Restart Teams after changing permissions.
macOS
- Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Check Files and Folders for Teams-related entries.
- If Teams is denied, allow access and restart Teams.
Fixes for the Teams web client
Teams in a browser is sensitive to cookie state, permissions, and browser caching. If GIFs/images fail only on web, focus on browser site data first.
Verify browser permissions for media (photos/files)
When Teams prompts you for file upload access, a blocked permission can prevent images from uploading or displaying.
- Open the Teams web page.
- Click the lock icon in the browser address bar.
- Find Permissions (or site settings) and allow Files / Storage / relevant media permissions.
- Reload the page and test GIF/image insertion again.
Clear site data for Teams domains only
This avoids wiping your entire browser history and reduces the chance of breaking other sites.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open your browser Settings → Privacy.
- Find Cookies and site data or Site settings.
- Search for and remove data for Teams-related domains (your organization’s tenant domain plus common Teams endpoints).
- Reload Teams and sign in again.
If you’re not sure which domains to delete, clear site data for the specific Teams tab’s domain only.

Test with a clean browser profile
Browser extensions (ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers) often block media rendering. A clean profile tells you quickly whether the issue is extensions-related.
- Create a new browser profile (or Incognito/Private window).
- Sign in to Teams.
- Try sending a GIF from the picker and uploading a small PNG (under 1 MB if possible).
If it works in a clean profile, disable extensions one-by-one and retest until the offender is found.
Fixes for iPhone and iPad (Teams mobile)
On iOS/iPadOS, media loading depends heavily on app permissions (Photos access) and network behavior. Low data mode and restrictive cellular settings can also break media.
Reinstall vs. sign out/in: what to try first
Start with sign out/in; reinstall comes later.
- Update the Teams app from the App Store.
- Sign out of Teams and sign back in.
- If GIFs/images still fail, force close the app: open App Switcher and swipe Teams away, then re-launch.
- If the issue persists across chats, uninstall and reinstall Teams.
Reinstalling clears app-level cache that often survives sign-out.
Check iOS/iPadOS settings for Photos and Cellular data
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos.
- Find Microsoft Teams and set permission to All Photos or at least Selected Photos based on your needs.
- Open Settings → Cellular → Microsoft Teams.
- Ensure cellular data is allowed if you test on mobile data.
- Turn off Low Data Mode temporarily to test.
Restart the app and re-load the chat
Sometimes the media feed fails only for a single thread. Opening the thread fresh after app restart fixes the majority of “stuck media” cases.
- Close the chat screen.
- Force close Teams.
- Reopen Teams and go back to the conversation.
- Try sending a new GIF and a new image.
Why GIFs fail specifically (common GIF-related causes)
Even if attachments work, GIFs can fail due to provider loading, animation rendering, or tenant content restrictions.
GIF picker search vs. direct GIF paste
Test both paths:
- GIF picker: open the GIF icon and search for a known term.
- Paste a GIF URL or paste/copy an image/GIF from another source (if your tenant allows it).
If the picker is blank or results don’t display, the issue is likely endpoint access or a client rendering/cache issue. If pasted GIFs fail but uploaded images work, focus on GIF rendering constraints or content policy.
Animated GIFs and file-size limits
Teams may downscale, convert, or restrict certain media based on client capacity. If you only notice failures with larger GIFs, try smaller files.

- Full HD 1080p video calling and recording at 30 fps. You'll make a strong impression with this PC webcam that features crisp, clearly detailed, and vibrantly colored video
- Try a different GIF with fewer frames (shorter animation).
- Try a static PNG or JPG to confirm basic image rendering works.
- As a workaround, convert the GIF to MP4 and upload the MP4 (many clients handle MP4 more reliably than animated GIFs).
If GIF animation never shows but thumbnails do, update the client and test again. Rendering bugs do get patched across builds.
Content security and tenant policies
Organizations can restrict external content, media providers, or file types. This can cause GIF/image loading to fail for everyone in the tenant, or only for users in certain groups.
If coworkers can’t see the same GIF/image either, this points to tenant policy or endpoint blocking rather than your device.

- Clearing only your browser cookies globally: it’s slower and doesn’t fix Teams desktop/webview issues. Clear site data for Teams domains or reset the app cache.
- Closing the window but not killing the background process: Teams must be fully quit before cache deletion. On Windows, use Task Manager to confirm related processes are gone.
- Testing only one file type: test both an image upload (PNG/JPG) and GIF insertion (picker and/or paste). That tells you whether it’s media-type-specific.
- Ignoring network differences: switching from corporate Wi‑Fi to a hotspot is the quickest indicator of proxy/DNS blocking.
- Waiting without updating: Teams fixes are shipped in multiple channels. If you haven’t updated in a while, updating can resolve the issue without further steps.
Troubleshooting matrix: symptoms → likely causes → fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix to try |
|---|---|---|
| GIFs show as blank rectangles | Blocked GIF provider/CDN or cached rendering failure | Switch network + clear Teams cache |
| Images upload but don’t display | Corrupted cache or permissions denied for media rendering | Update Teams + restart fully + clear cache |
| Works on desktop, fails on web | Browser site data/permission/extensions | Clear Teams site data + test in clean profile |
| Only mobile fails | Photos permission or cellular restrictions | Settings → Photos → allow Teams; disable Low Data Mode |
| Animated GIFs show first frame only | Rendering limitation or policy converting GIFs | Try smaller GIF or MP4 workaround; update Teams |
When you’re in a managed workplace (IT/admin path)
If you’re in a managed environment, your best outcome comes from combining the user fixes with admin verification. Media endpoints and policies often sit behind standard security tooling.
Check tenant settings and messaging policies
Ask IT to verify whether Teams messaging is restricted for your user/group. Policies can affect what file types and external media sources are allowed.
Look for settings related to:
- External content and media sharing
- Allowed file types and download/upload restrictions
- Controls that affect third-party embedded content
Verify allowed external endpoints (GIF providers/CDNs)
Some GIF providers and CDNs are categorized under external media domains. A proxy that blocks them can make the GIF picker appear broken or cause images to fail to render.
Provide IT with what you tested: GIF picker term, whether you used paste, and whether uploading a local PNG works. If local uploads work but GIFs fail, it strongly suggests provider/CDN blocking.
Confirm device compliance and app restrictions
Mobile and desktop compliance tooling can restrict data access and app behavior. If Teams is restricted by device posture, attachments can fail silently.

FAQ
Why do images upload but show broken icons in Teams?
Most often it’s a cache/rendering problem in the Teams client or a permissions/network restriction that prevents the viewer component from fetching the media. Update Teams, fully quit the app, and clear cache folders; then test on a different network.
Why do GIFs show results but won’t appear?
That pattern usually points to GIF provider/CDN access being blocked or webview cache corruption. Clear the Teams cache (desktop) or site data (web), then retest. If it works on a hotspot, your corporate network/proxy is the likely culprit.

Teams supports animated GIFs, but reliability depends on client build and rendering behavior. If you consistently see animation failures (or only the first frame shows), try a smaller GIF or convert the GIF to MP4 as a workaround.
Will clearing cache delete my chats or files?
Clearing Teams cache typically removes local cached web content, not your chat history. Still, sign out/in after changes and test carefully. Avoid deleting your entire Teams profile directory unless you’re following an official IT procedure.
What’s the quickest way to confirm it’s not my device?
Have a coworker try the same GIF/image in the same chat. If they also can’t see it, it’s tenant policy or endpoint/network blocking. If they can, focus on your specific client, permissions, and cache.
Bottom Line
Microsoft Teams not showing GIFs or images is usually fixable with a focused sequence: update Teams, fully restart, clear desktop cache (or Teams site data in the browser), and test on a different network to rule out proxy/DNS blocking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf it fails across coworkers too, involve IT to check tenant messaging policies and allowed media endpoints for GIF providers/CDNs. With the right combination of cache reset and network/policy verification, GIFs and images typically return quickly.
