Microsoft Store Apps vs. Desktop Apps: What’s the Difference?

A Microsoft Store app describes a distribution route, while desktop app describes a kind of Windows software. Desktop apps can also be distributed through the Store.

A Microsoft Store app is defined by where or how it is distributed; a desktop app usually describes the kind of Windows software it is. The terms are not opposites: a traditional desktop app can be listed in the Microsoft Store, either as an MSIX package or through its publisher’s existing EXE or MSI installer. To understand how an app installs and updates, check its delivery method—not just whether it has a Store listing.

What do “Microsoft Store app” and “desktop app” mean?

People often use “Microsoft Store app” to mean software they find or install through the Microsoft Store. That label describes a distribution channel, but it does not identify the app’s underlying technology or package format. A Store listing tells you where the app is presented to users; by itself, it does not tell you what kind of Windows app it is or exactly how it will be installed and maintained.

“Desktop app” usually refers to traditional Windows software, especially applications built for Win32. WPF and WinForms applications are desktop apps too. Desktop describes the kind of application; it does not tell you whether the app comes from the Store, uses MSIX, or installs through a conventional setup program. Desktop apps may be packaged or unpackaged, so the word “desktop” does not imply one particular installer.

UWP is a specific Windows app model, not a general name for everything in the Store. Microsoft Learn puts the distinction this way: “First off, all UWP apps are packaged, and run in an AppContainer. But for desktop apps, things are more flexible.” Desktop software can be packaged or unpackaged, while UWP apps are packaged. That distinction is about the app model and its runtime, not simply where a user downloaded the app.

MSIX is a packaging and deployment technology, not another name for UWP. Microsoft supports MSIX packaging for UWP, Win32, WPF, and WinForms apps. So an app can be a desktop app, use an MSIX package, and be distributed through the Store at the same time. These labels answer different questions: what type of app it is, how it is packaged, and how it reaches the user.

How do Store distribution and desktop apps overlap?

The Store can distribute desktop software in more than one way. A publisher can submit an MSIX package, or submit a Store listing that uses the publisher’s existing EXE or MSI installer. In the latter case, the Store listing is still a route to desktop software; it does not turn that software into UWP.

The practical difference is the installation and update path. With a Store-hosted MSIX submission, Microsoft provides Store hosting and Store signing for the package, and Store/Windows handles update delivery. With a listing that uses an existing EXE or MSI installer, the publisher hosts and signs the installer as required by Microsoft’s submission guidance, and the application or publisher manages its updates. A user therefore should not infer the update process from the Store listing alone.

What to compare Store MSIX submission Store listing with publisher’s EXE/MSI installer
What the Store provides Microsoft hosts the app package. The Store lists the app; the publisher hosts the installer.
Signing Store signing is provided for the package. The publisher signs the installer and relevant binaries as required by Microsoft’s submission guidance.
Update responsibility Store/OS-managed delivery. Microsoft’s Win32 distribution guidance says the OS automatically checks for updates every 24 hours for packaged MSIX Store submissions. The app or publisher manages updates. The 24-hour check detail does not apply generally to this route.
Software it can deliver UWP and several kinds of desktop apps can be packaged. Existing Win32 software can use its original EXE or MSI installation path.
Does the route define a separate app type? No. It is a package and distribution path. No. It is another way to list and deliver desktop software through the Store.

Think of the two Store routes as different answers to “How is this software delivered?” rather than as two different species of application. In one route, the Store hosts a package and provides signing and update delivery for that package. In the other, the Store listing points users to a publisher-managed installer, and the publisher or app remains responsible for the installation and update process. Both routes can put desktop software in the Store.

This distinction matters even if the listing looks similar to a user. The listing’s presence does not establish who hosts the installer, who signs it, or who supplies later updates. Those details follow the chosen submission path. If an exact update process matters to you, verify the route for the particular app rather than applying a general rule to every item in the Store.

What changes when an app uses MSIX?

MSIX provides a managed deployment model and package identity. Microsoft describes benefits such as a clean install and uninstall path and automatic updates. Depending on the app type and configuration, packaged desktop apps may also use virtualization. These are packaging and deployment characteristics; they do not mean every MSIX app behaves identically or has the same access restrictions.

Do not equate “packaged” with “UWP,” or assume that packaging alone determines an app’s capabilities. A desktop app packaged with MSIX remains a desktop app. Its runtime behavior depends on the app and its configuration as well as its package. In other words, MSIX tells you something about how the software is packaged and deployed, but it does not by itself identify the framework or settle every question about what the app can do.

Package identity is one of the useful distinctions to keep in mind. An MSIX package can give an app package identity and a managed deployment path. That may affect the way Windows recognizes and manages the package, but the details of integration and behavior depend on the app type and configuration. Avoid assuming that every MSIX app has identical integration simply because each uses the same packaging technology.

The same caution applies to install and uninstall behavior. A clean install and uninstall path is among the benefits Microsoft describes for MSIX. That is a reason to consider the package format, not a basis for claiming that every other installer is unsafe or that every MSIX app is identical. The right comparison is between the actual routes available for the app you want, along with the publisher’s instructions and support.

Does a Store app update through the Microsoft Store?

Not necessarily. A Store-hosted MSIX submission receives Store/OS-managed update delivery; Microsoft says the OS checks automatically every 24 hours for updates for this submission path. A Store listing that uses the publisher’s EXE or MSI installer relies on the app or publisher for updates. A Store listing by itself therefore does not establish who supplies updates or how they arrive.

The 24-hour detail is specific to packaged MSIX Store submissions in Microsoft’s Win32 distribution guidance. It should not be generalized to a publisher-managed EXE or MSI, or treated as a promise about every app that has a Store page. For that publisher-installer route, the app or publisher manages updates, so the update mechanism and timing are associated with its own process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the specific app you are considering, check its Store information and the publisher’s instructions to identify the installer and update source. If the app uses a publisher-managed installer, follow the publisher’s update guidance rather than assuming the Store will deliver later versions. If the listing does not make the route clear, consult the publisher’s documentation or support information rather than guessing from the app’s name or Store icon.

This is also why “I installed it from the Store” is not a complete description of future maintenance. It tells you the Store was part of discovery or distribution, but may not answer whether updates arrive through Store/OS-managed delivery or through the app or publisher. Before relying on automatic delivery, establish which of those routes the app actually uses.

Are Microsoft Store apps safer or simpler than desktop apps?

The labels alone do not support that conclusion. A Store listing does not prove that an app is UWP, and “desktop app” does not mean that software is necessarily risky or difficult to install. Capabilities and behavior depend on the app’s technology, package, configuration, and publisher.

An MSIX package can provide a managed install and uninstall path, package identity, and Store-managed update delivery when submitted through the Store in that way. Those features are useful, but they are not a universal guarantee of identical sandboxing, access limits, or behavior. Likewise, an EXE or MSI installer may be the publisher’s established installation route, but the publisher’s support and update practices still matter.

Assess the specific publisher and delivery path. For a Store listing, determine whether it uses an MSIX package or a publisher-hosted installer, and confirm who handles future updates. The Store icon is not a substitute for those details. Nor does the word “desktop” tell you enough to judge the publisher, installer, or app behavior on its own.

There is no sound basis here for a blanket claim that one category is always safer, faster, or simpler. The app model, package, configuration, and publisher all matter, and Microsoft’s description allows for multiple desktop packaging and runtime behaviors. Judge the specific app and route, not a shorthand label.

How to compare two Windows apps

If two apps appear similar, compare the details that affect installation, maintenance, and compatibility rather than sorting them into “Store” and “desktop” camps. A Store icon is only one clue about distribution. To understand what you are actually choosing, separate the app’s technology from its package and from the organization responsible for delivery and updates.

  1. Identify the app type or framework. Is it UWP, Win32, WPF, WinForms, or another desktop application? A Store listing does not answer this on its own. The distinction can help you understand what kind of Windows application is being described, but do not assume that a Store listing implies UWP.
  2. Find the package format. Determine whether the app uses MSIX or a conventional EXE/MSI installer. Desktop apps can use either packaged or unpackaged deployment. MSIX is not synonymous with UWP; it can package several app types, including Win32, WPF, and WinForms.
  3. Check who provides the installer. For a Store MSIX submission, Microsoft hosts the package. For a listing that uses an existing installer, the publisher hosts it. That difference helps explain why two apps with Store listings may have different setup paths.
  4. Check signing and update responsibility. Store signing applies to the Store MSIX package route. With a publisher’s installer, the publisher handles signing as required by Microsoft’s guidance and manages updates through the app or its own process. Do not carry the MSIX route’s update details over to the publisher-installer route.
  5. Consider package identity and Windows integration. MSIX can provide package identity and a managed deployment model, but specific behavior depends on the app type and configuration. Avoid inferring identical capabilities or access restrictions just from the package label.
  6. Verify publisher support and trust. Confirm that the listing and installation instructions identify the publisher you intend to use, and learn where that publisher provides support and update information. A distribution route does not replace the need to identify who stands behind the app.

A useful way to apply the checklist is to ask the questions separately. First ask, “What type of app is this?” Then ask, “What package does it use?” Next, ask, “Who hosts and signs the installer?” Finally, ask, “Who supplies updates and support?” Answering one question does not automatically answer the others. For example, learning that an app is Win32 does not tell you whether it is packaged with MSIX, and learning that it appears in the Store does not tell you who updates a publisher-hosted installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider two possible Store listings. One may deliver a desktop app as an MSIX package, with Microsoft hosting and signing the package and Store/OS-managed update delivery. Another may list existing Win32 software that the user installs through the publisher’s EXE or MSI; in that case, the publisher hosts and signs the installer as required and manages updates. These examples illustrate different routes, not a ranking. The app’s framework, installer path, and maintenance responsibility still need to be checked for the actual listing.

This comparison helps answer practical questions that the Store-versus-desktop wording obscures: where setup comes from, who maintains it, and what kind of Windows app is being installed. It also prevents an easy category error: treating distribution channel, app model, and package format as if they were interchangeable names for the same thing.

Which installation route should you choose?

Choose based on the particular app’s supported route and your preference for update management, not on a blanket assumption that one category is better. A Store MSIX route can centralize package hosting and update delivery. A publisher’s EXE or MSI route may preserve the software’s existing installation and update process. The Store listing itself does not make those routes equivalent.

  • If you want Store/OS-managed update delivery, confirm that the listing is a Store MSIX submission.
  • If the listing runs a publisher’s EXE or MSI installer, expect the app or publisher to manage updates.
  • If you need to know what Windows app model or package is involved, check the app’s technical or publisher documentation; “available in the Store” is not enough to tell you.

There is no one route that can be declared best for every desktop app from these labels alone. The important question is whether the route fits the app and makes its installation and update responsibilities clear to you. If you prefer Store/OS-managed delivery, verify that the app is using the Store MSIX route rather than relying on the fact that a listing exists. If the publisher’s installer is the supported route, use the publisher’s own instructions and keep its update process in mind.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before installing, a short check can resolve most of the ambiguity: identify the publisher; look for whether the Store listing provides an MSIX package or uses a publisher’s EXE/MSI; note who hosts and signs that installer; and find the publisher’s update and support instructions. If an app’s listing does not answer a technical question you care about, the publisher’s documentation is the next place to check. That is more informative than treating “Store app” and “desktop app” as competing categories.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Microsoft Store apps desktop apps?

Some are. “Microsoft Store app” commonly describes where an app is discovered or distributed, while “desktop app” describes a kind of Windows software, often Win32, WPF, or WinForms. Desktop apps can be distributed through the Store, including as MSIX packages or through a publisher’s existing EXE/MSI installer. A Store listing does not prove that an app is UWP.

Do desktop apps update through the Microsoft Store?

It depends on the delivery route. For a packaged MSIX Store submission, Store/OS-managed update delivery applies; Microsoft’s Win32 distribution guidance says the OS automatically checks for updates every 24 hours for that route. If the Store listing uses the publisher’s EXE or MSI installer, the app or publisher manages updates. Check the specific listing and publisher instructions.

Is MSIX the same as UWP?

No. MSIX is a packaging and deployment technology, not an app model. Microsoft supports MSIX packaging for UWP, Win32, WPF, and WinForms apps. A desktop app packaged with MSIX remains a desktop app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a Store listing mean Microsoft hosts the installer?

Not always. For a Store MSIX submission, Microsoft hosts the app package and provides Store signing. A Store listing can instead use the publisher’s existing EXE or MSI installer, which the publisher hosts and signs as required by Microsoft’s submission guidance.

Are Store apps always safer or simpler to install?

The labels alone do not establish that. An MSIX package can offer a managed deployment model and clean install/uninstall path, but app behavior and access depend on its technology, package, and configuration. Evaluate the specific publisher and delivery route rather than assuming all Store apps or all desktop apps behave alike.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: “Microsoft Store app” describes a distribution route; “desktop app” describes a type of Windows software. The categories overlap. To understand a particular app’s installation, signing, and updates, check whether it is delivered as a Store MSIX package or through a publisher’s EXE/MSI installer, then confirm the publisher’s support and update instructions.
