On supported Copilot+ PCs, it periodically saves searchable images of what appears on your screen, allowing you to find and reopen something you previously viewed. Microsoft says the feature does not record audio or store continuous video.
What Microsoft Recall actually captures
Recall creates screen snapshots at intervals while snapshot saving is enabled. It indexes those images so you can search for documents, websites, conversations, settings, or other content that appeared on the display. The result is a searchable visual history of screen activity, not a continuous video of your computer session.
The distinction matters: a snapshot may preserve sensitive information that was visible at the time, but Recall’s documented mechanism is not an audio recorder, webcam recorder, or keystroke logger. Microsoft says it does not record audio or save continuous video.
Who can use Recall
Recall is limited to eligible Copilot+ PCs rather than all Windows computers. Eligibility depends on the exact hardware configuration, installed Windows build, and market support. Microsoft’s documented rollout path requires the April 2025 Windows non-security preview update or a later update, although the update alone does not make an incompatible PC eligible.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
Microsoft’s April 25, 2025 announcement described Recall as generally available on Copilot+ PCs through a phased rollout. That dated statement does not establish that every compatible model or region has access now. Check the specific PC model, Windows version, region, and current Microsoft support guidance before assuming the feature is available.
Practical eligibility checklist
- Confirm that the computer is marketed and configured as a Copilot+ PC.
- Check the exact model’s supported Windows edition and hardware requirements.
- Install the April 2025 Windows non-security preview update or a later release where Microsoft’s current guidance requires it.
- Verify that Recall has rolled out for the device and region.
- On a work-managed PC, check whether an administrator policy disables Recall or snapshot saving.
Can Microsoft see your Recall snapshots?
Microsoft states that Recall snapshots and related Recall data remain on the device and are not shared with Microsoft or other third parties through the feature. That is Microsoft’s description of its architecture, not an independent security audit or a guarantee against every possible compromise of the computer.
Microsoft published a revised security and privacy architecture in September 2024 after changing the feature’s initial rollout. Treat the local-storage statement as a vendor claim about how Recall is designed to operate, while still protecting the Windows account, device, and stored data with normal security practices.

Controls available to users
Microsoft documents several controls for managing the snapshot history:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

| Control | What it does | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Pause snapshot saving | Stops Recall from saving new snapshots until saving is resumed. | Existing snapshots are not automatically removed. |
| Exclude apps and websites | Prevents snapshots associated with selected applications or sites from being saved. | Exclusions must be configured for the apps and sites you want protected. |
| Delete saved material | Removes snapshots, including by time range or by app or site where supported. | Deleting does not prevent future captures unless saving is paused or the relevant exclusion is set. |
| Organization policies | Allows administrators to govern whether Recall is enabled and whether snapshot saving is allowed. | Available policy behavior depends on Windows management support and organizational configuration. |
Use the Recall settings in Windows to pause saving, define exclusions, or delete saved snapshots. The exact labels and placement can vary as Microsoft updates Windows, so the current Settings search for “Recall” is the most reliable way to reach them.
Does Recall protect passwords and private browsing?
Microsoft describes sensitive-information filtering and says snapshots are not saved when certain sensitive conditions are detected. Its support material describes an on-device Microsoft Classification Engine for supported filtering configurations, alongside app and website exclusions.

Filtering is not an infallible promise that no password, private message, financial detail, or other sensitive content can ever be captured. Detection depends on the supported configuration and the content being displayed. If a screen contains information you never want stored, pause snapshot saving or exclude the relevant application or website before displaying it.
How organizations can manage Recall
Windows administrators can use management policies to control whether Recall is allowed and whether snapshot saving is turned off. Microsoft also documents integration options with supported data-loss-prevention providers. Employers should decide policy centrally, communicate whether snapshots are permitted, and account for the fact that snapshots can contain whatever appears in an allowed application or site.
What “records everything” gets wrong
The headline is understandable because Recall can preserve a broad, searchable history of visible activity when saving is on. It is nevertheless inaccurate as a technical description. Recall takes periodic screen snapshots; it does not continuously film the desktop, record sound, or capture every action as a video stream.

The privacy question is therefore not only whether Recall is enabled. It is also what applications and sites are excluded, how long snapshots remain, who controls the Windows device, and whether an organization has imposed policies.
Should you enable it?
Recall can save time when you regularly need to retrace something you saw but did not bookmark or save. It is a poor fit if a persistent visual history of your work creates unacceptable privacy or compliance risk. Before enabling it, review the exclusion list, understand deletion controls, and check any employer or school policy. On a shared or highly sensitive computer, leaving snapshot saving paused or disabled may be the safer choice.

Does Windows Recall record everything I do?
No. It periodically captures screen snapshots for search. Microsoft says it does not record audio or save continuous video, so describing it as a complete recording of every action is inaccurate.

Can I turn Recall off or delete what it saved?
Microsoft documents controls to pause snapshot saving, exclude apps and websites, and delete saved snapshots by time range or app or site where supported.
Does Recall work on my Windows PC?
Only if the exact computer is an eligible Copilot+ PC with the required Windows updates and supported rollout. Check the model, installed build, region, and any administrator policy.
Does Recall guarantee that passwords will not be captured?
No. Microsoft describes sensitive-information filtering and exclusions, but filtering depends on supported configurations and should not be treated as an absolute guarantee.
The Bottom Line
Microsoft Recall is a searchable collection of screen snapshots for eligible Copilot+ PCs, not a literal recording of everything on a computer. Its usefulness depends on accepting that visible activity may be stored locally, while its privacy depends on pausing saving, configuring exclusions, deleting snapshots, and following applicable organization policies.
