Yes. In a June 2024 all-hands meeting, Google Search chief Liz Reid told employees that occasional AI failures were problems to identify and fix—not a reason to stop releasing features. The comments followed viral AI Overview answers about putting glue on pizza and eating rocks. Google continued the rollout while narrowing risky queries and adding safeguards.
What Liz Reid told Google employees
Reid’s message was reported after a June 2024 company all-hands meeting. Search Engine Land quoted her saying:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
“It is important that we don’t hold back features just because there might be occasional problems, but more as we find the problems, we address them.”
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
She also said Google should take risks thoughtfully, test extensively and respond urgently when testing failed to reveal every problem. In that view, shipping is part of the testing process: a feature reaches more real-world queries, failures become visible, and engineers use those failures to adjust the system.

That position explains why Google did not withdraw AI Overviews after the first viral screenshots. It does not mean Google considered every answer acceptable; it means the company treated the defects as an engineering and product-risk problem rather than evidence that generative search should be abandoned.
What the viral AI Overview answers actually were
Google’s new AI Overviews appeared above ordinary search links and generated conversational summaries. Some widely shared examples were genuine failures, while Google said other screenshots circulating online had been fabricated.
| Example | What was reported | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Glue on pizza | An overview suggested using nontoxic glue to thicken pizza sauce. | WIRED described the answer as a real failure; the advice was unsafe and nonsensical. |
| Eating rocks | An overview appeared to recommend eating rocks. | WIRED reported genuine examples, but not every image shared online was verified. |
| Other screenshots | Posts showed additional bizarre answers attributed to Google. | Google said some viral screenshots were fake, so individual images cannot all be treated as evidence. |
WIRED reported that the system could misread a query, miss the difference between serious and sarcastic language, or treat sparse information as sufficient evidence. In examples discussed by the publication, a satirical Onion article and sarcastic forum material were interpreted as factual sources. The problem was therefore not only that a model could invent text; it could also assemble a confident summary from material that humans would recognize as a joke.

Why Google kept expanding AI Search
A major change to the Search interface
Google launched AI Overviews in U.S. Search in May 2024. Instead of requiring a user to open several results, Search could place a generated explanation at the top of the results page when Google judged one useful. That made the feature central to the product, not a small laboratory experiment.
Scale was part of the strategy
The Associated Press reported that Google expected AI Overviews to reach about 1 billion people by the end of 2024. At that scale, unusual queries and adversarial or humorous wording are unavoidable. Google’s stated approach was to combine extensive pre-release testing with rapid fixes after deployment, accepting that testing would not expose every edge case.
Risk was weighed against usefulness
Reid’s comments reflect a trade-off: withholding the feature avoids some failures but also delays a new way to answer complex questions. Google chose continued deployment with restrictions rather than a full rollback. That choice places more importance on how quickly the company detects harmful answers and how clearly it limits situations in which an automated summary is shown.

- Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
- You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
- Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
What Google changed after the failures
Google said it made more than a dozen technical improvements after reviewing the incidents. The reported changes targeted both when an overview should appear and what information it should use.
| Observed problem | Reported change | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Nonsensical or deliberately strange queries | Better detection of queries that do not merit an AI Overview | Prevent the system from producing a polished answer when the request itself is incoherent. |
| Low-quality user-generated material | Less reliance on sources such as Reddit | Reduce the chance that jokes, speculation or unsupported advice will be elevated into a summary. |
| Users finding answers unhelpful | Show AI Overviews less often in situations where they had not helped users | Use feedback about usefulness to reduce unnecessary summaries. |
| Health-related risk | Stronger guardrails that disable summaries on sensitive topics | Keep generated text away from queries where bad advice could cause physical harm. |
| Satire and humor | Limit the types of satire and humor content eligible for summaries | Reduce the chance that a joke will be presented as literal instruction. |
| Overly broad eligibility | Restrict the kinds of searches that can trigger an overview | Narrow the feature’s exposure while safeguards are improved. |
The Guardian reported Google’s figure that policy-violating AI Overviews occurred in fewer than one in 7 million unique queries in which the feature appeared. That is a Google-reported rate for policy violations, not a claim that factual errors occurred only that often, and it does not establish that every absurd answer had been eliminated.
Did Google actually fix AI Overviews?
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than “the problem is solved.” Google acknowledged real failures and described concrete changes, but neither the company’s metric nor the published reports provides a complete error rate for factual accuracy, satire detection or unsafe advice.

A policy-violation rate measures a defined class of outputs. An answer can be factually wrong, misleading or unhelpful without meeting Google’s policy-violation definition. Conversely, a screenshot shared on social media may be altered or missing the original query and context. Evaluating a viral example therefore requires checking the underlying search, the date and whether Google’s system actually generated the displayed text.

AI Overviews changed the position of links on the page by putting a generated summary above ordinary results. That creates a direct question for publishers: if a user receives enough information in the overview, will the user still visit the source site?
Recommended Free Tools
The Associated Press quoted Raptive executive Marc McCollum estimating that roughly 25% of traffic could be negatively affected during testing. That figure was McCollum’s projection, not a measurement from Google. Reid argued that users would continue clicking when they wanted deeper information, details or original reporting. The available reporting does not establish a single traffic impact across publishers, topics or query types.

- 【Click to Wake】With smart sleep mode, it saves power by standby after 10 inactive minutes, just 2-3 clicks to wake. This efficient design delivers 3x longer battery life than motion-wake mice. Engineered for durability, its buttons and scroll wheel are tested for 10 million clicks, ensuring long-term reliability and consistent performance.
The practical effect is likely to vary with the query. A short factual question may be answerable in the overview, while a complicated explanation, local service, firsthand report or continuously updated page still gives users a reason to open a link. Publishers also face the possibility that an overview will summarize their work without delivering a corresponding visit.
How to use AI Overviews safely
- Read the source links. Treat the summary as a starting point, especially when the answer affects money, health, safety or legal decisions.
- Check whether the wording is literal. A result built from satire, a forum joke or an unusual phrase can look authoritative while being completely wrong.
- Compare multiple sources. If the overview gives a surprising claim, open independent results and look for agreement from reputable organizations.
- Do not follow hazardous instructions. The glue-on-pizza and eating-rocks examples show why a confident tone is not evidence that advice is safe.
- Report a bad result. Feedback gives Google information about queries its pre-release tests did not anticipate.
What this episode says about Google’s AI strategy
Google’s response was neither a denial that failures occurred nor a promise that generated answers would be dependable in every situation. It was a decision to keep deploying AI Search while tightening eligibility, reducing reliance on risky sources and adding topic-specific restrictions.
For readers, the key distinction is between an AI feature being available and an answer being trustworthy. For publishers, the distinction is between appearing as a cited source and receiving a click. The 2024 rollout made both questions unavoidable, but the reporting available at the time did not provide a like-for-like performance comparison with a named competing AI-search product.
Bottom line
Liz Reid’s message was clear: Google intended to keep shipping AI Search, find failures in production, and fix them quickly. The viral errors were partly real and partly misrepresented online; Google reported more than a dozen technical changes and narrower use cases afterward. Those steps reduced specific risks, but they did not turn AI Overviews into an authority that users can trust without checking the underlying links.
