It guides administrators through assessments and Purview protections; it is not a single switch that guarantees Copilot cannot surface sensitive information. Outcomes depend on existing permissions, the workloads covered, and how policies are configured.
What Microsoft Purview DSPM does
Microsoft describes current Data Security Posture Management as a way to bring Purview capabilities together around data-security objectives. It is distinct from the earlier experiences called DSPM classic and DSPM for AI classic. See Microsoft’s overview of Purview DSPM.

For Copilot readiness, DSPM helps administrators assess where data may be overshared, prioritize risks, and apply relevant protections. Microsoft summarizes the purpose of its assessments this way: “Data risk assessments from Data Security Posture Management help you identify and fix potential data oversharing risks in your organization.” (Microsoft Learn: Prevent oversharing with data risk assessments.)

Why oversharing matters for Copilot
Copilot works within a user’s existing permissions and access controls. If a user can access a file or other content, that content may be relevant to their Copilot experience; broad or poorly governed permissions can therefore make previously overlooked exposure more consequential. Microsoft states that “Copilot operates within existing permissions and access controls.” (Microsoft Learn: Copilot controls security and governance.)

Purview controls can help limit what is available to users and how data is processed, but their effect depends on the service, workload, and configuration. Microsoft’s guidance describes supported controls that can prevent content from being returned to a user or used by an LLM when that user lacks access. This is not a promise that DSPM alone blocks every disclosure: permissions still need to be appropriate, policies must be configured, and relevant workloads must be covered. See Microsoft’s guidance on managing data security and compliance for Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat.
How DSPM helps reduce exposure before Copilot
- Assess potential oversharing. Run a data risk assessment to locate content and access patterns that may create risk. Assessments can be default or custom; Microsoft describes custom assessment use for protecting sensitive data references in Copilot and agent responses. Review the assessment guidance to understand available options.
- Prioritize findings. Use assessment results and recommendations to decide which risks to address first. A finding is an indication to investigate and remediate, not proof that Copilot has disclosed the content.
- Apply or refine protections. Review permissions and sharing, and use controls such as sensitivity labels and data loss prevention (DLP) policies where appropriate. A configured DLP policy can restrict Copilot or agent processing for selected sensitivity labels, but administrators need to configure the policy and verify that it covers the intended workload. Microsoft outlines related controls in its Copilot data security guidance.
- Review activity and reassess. Check reporting and audit visibility, evaluate whether remediation addressed the risk, and run assessments again as data, access, or Copilot use changes. Microsoft’s getting-started guidance says to allow at least a day after setup for reports to appear. That reporting delay is an operational expectation, not evidence that every risk has been found; see Microsoft’s Copilot setup guidance.
Readiness review versus a mature Purview deployment
A basic readiness review can identify obvious oversharing, while a more developed deployment can extend assessment, remediation, and monitoring across selected environments. These are implementation differences, not separate products with a documented performance benchmark. Compare the scope and ownership of the work rather than assuming that a particular deployment tier guarantees a specific reduction in exposure.

| Area to compare | Basic readiness review | More mature deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Data locations assessed | Review may focus on selected locations; exact scope depends on the organization. | Can assess a broader set of locations where supported and configured. |
| Assessment approach | May use default assessments. | May add custom assessments for defined risks, including sensitive-data references in Copilot or agent responses. |
| Labeling and remediation | May rely on manual review and correction. | May use configured labeling and policy workflows, subject to workload and licensing requirements. |
| Workloads and Copilot experiences | Coverage depends on the experiences and workloads included in the review. | Can cover additional supported workloads when they are configured and in scope. |
| Reporting and audit | Visibility depends on the reports and audit capabilities enabled. | Can incorporate ongoing review of reporting and activity for the configured scope. |
| Licensing and regional prerequisites | Must meet applicable licensing, region, and permission requirements. | Must meet the same kinds of prerequisites for each added capability or workload. |
| Ongoing ownership | Often handled as a time-bounded review; assign an owner for findings. | Requires an ongoing owner for assessments, policy changes, and remediation. |
Microsoft’s documentation explains capabilities and deployment considerations, but does not publish a single product-versus-product benchmark for these two approaches. The comparison is a planning framework, not a measured outcome. For deployment considerations, consult Microsoft’s Purview DSPM deployment guidance.

Microsoft’s high-level Copilot controls comparison associates foundational data security and governance controls with A3/E3/G3 licensing and optimized controls with A5/E5/G5 licensing. It lists targeted DSPM for AI risk assessments and policy suggestions among optimized controls. This is not a complete entitlement table: coverage can vary by workload and change over time. Before rollout, administrators should verify supporting licenses, regional availability, required permissions, and any workload-specific configuration. Some scenarios may also involve pay-as-you-go billing. Microsoft’s setup material includes protecting data with sensitivity labels and securing interactions in Copilot experiences. Start with deployment considerations and DSPM setup tasks.

DSPM can give administrators a structured way to find potential oversharing, prioritize remediation, and connect findings to applicable Purview controls. It does not independently repair every permission, cover every data location, or guarantee that Copilot cannot expose information. The result depends on the access model, policy configuration, supported service, and scope of the deployment.
