Microsoft has made visible progress on Windows 11 usability and update controls, but the six-month evidence does not show a proven system-wide speedup. In PCWorld’s October 1, 2026 assessment, Search and a quieter Windows earned A- grades, while Start and the taskbar received C. Those are one reviewer’s judgments, not standardized measurements; the performance grade was B, with the reviewer explicitly unable to confirm that Windows felt faster without a same-hardware comparison.
What Microsoft promised to improve
In March, Microsoft said its Windows 11 quality effort would focus on performance, reliability, and well-crafted experiences. In a July 31 progress update, the company recapped commitments to improve taskbar customization, make AI integration more intentional, reduce disruption from Windows Update, speed up and strengthen File Explorer, give users more control over widgets and feeds, simplify the Windows Insider Program, and improve Feedback Hub. Microsoft said many changes had been rolling out to Insiders, with broader rollout expected to begin in fall. A promise or Insider preview is not proof that every user already has the change.

The July post also described work in progress across several areas:
- Search: A calmer Search home and clearer results.
- Personalization: Taskbar position options and previews for Start customization.
- Widgets: Quieter defaults.
- File Explorer: Architecture and usability improvements.
- Connectivity: Improvements involving USB4 docks, Bluetooth, and printer discovery.
- Efficiency and sign-in: Memory-efficiency work and more reliable Windows Hello sign-in.
- Updates: More control, including longer pause options and the ability to skip updates during initial setup.
These are changes Microsoft reported, not independently quantified results. The company also identified four continuing priorities through the end of 2026: faster onboarding and setup, memory optimization for PCs with 8GB and above, simpler family setup and parental controls, and more natural voice interaction. Those are ongoing focus areas, not a list of completed deliveries. Microsoft’s July 31 Windows Insider update describes the status and priorities.

How the six-month report card grades Windows 11
PCWorld Senior Editor Mark Hachman published an editorial report card on October 1, 2026. The grades summarize his assessment; they are not benchmark scores or a standardized evaluation.
| Area | PCWorld grade | What the review says |
|---|---|---|
| Search | A- | Results more clearly distinguish apps, settings, and documents. File Explorer search felt fast on the reviewer’s SSD-equipped PC. |
| Copilot and AI | B | The reviewer saw fewer Copilot icons in Notepad, Photos, and Snipping Tool, while Copilot remained in dedicated and Microsoft 365 experiences. |
| Windows Update and out-of-box experience | B | More control over update timing was welcome, but the reviewer retained reservations about delivery optimization and the complexity of Insider preview choices. |
| Windows performance | B | The grade is an editorial judgment, not evidence of a measured system-wide speed increase. |
| Windows quietness | A- | The reviewer judged the experience less cluttered and intrusive. |
| Start and taskbar | C | Customization and taskbar placement earned credit, but did not resolve the reviewer’s dissatisfaction with Start. |
The review’s strongest marks are for Search and a quieter Windows experience; its weakest are for Start and taskbar. Read the full PCWorld six-month report card for the reviewer’s reasoning.

Did Windows 11 get faster?
The cited review does not establish that it did. Hachman wrote: “I simply couldn’t say for certain whether Windows feels faster without doing a head-to-head comparison with the same hardware.” The B performance grade should therefore be read as an assessment of the experience, not a before-and-after result. No organization-published statistic in the cited coverage quantifies a Windows 11 performance improvement over these six months.
The review’s comments about 8GB laptops are based on the reviewer’s experience, not a controlled test. Basic browsing and Office tasks worked on the devices he tried, while ten Edge tabs plus background apps could consume available memory. That observation does not establish how all 8GB PCs perform, nor does it show that buying more memory is necessary. Microsoft’s stated work on optimizing memory for PCs with 8GB and above remains a priority rather than a reported, quantified result.

What users may receive—and when
Windows 11’s 2026 Update gathers features and improvements delivered through monthly updates over the previous year; it is not necessarily a single package that gives every device all changes at once. Microsoft says Search controls, Start and taskbar personalization, and File Explorer improvements are part of the update, but availability can vary by device and market, and some features may continue rolling out. Check Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates to see what is offered to your device. Microsoft’s Windows 11 2026 Update support page outlines the features and availability caveats.
Microsoft Learn says Windows 11 version 26H2 shares a servicing foundation with 24H2 and 25H2, and eligible devices can move to it with an enablement package. Many improvements arrive through monthly servicing updates rather than all appearing on launch day. Microsoft’s documentation on enablement packages and continuous innovation explains that delivery model: annual feature updates are complemented by periodic servicing updates, Store updates, and phased rollouts.

What the report card means for a Windows user
The six-month picture is better described as a mixed, ongoing effort than a clean turnaround. Search and reduced clutter received strong marks from one reviewer; Start and taskbar remained frustrating for that reviewer despite new controls. Microsoft has documented practical changes to updates, File Explorer, connectivity, sign-in, and personalization, but its own status post placed many improvements in the Insider or rollout pipeline. For a specific PC, the useful test is whether the promised control or feature has reached that device—not whether a letter grade implies a universal result.
