The Safe Mode launch is Outlook’s way of getting you back in while it avoids the problematic component.
This guide walks you through 8 fixes that cover the most common causes on Microsoft 365 Apps for Windows (Outlook 2016/2019/2021/365). Follow them in order and you’ll usually get Outlook starting normally again without losing access to your mailbox.

Why Outlook Keeps Launching in Safe Mode
Outlook triggers Safe Mode when it detects repeated startup problems. Common triggers include crashing add-ins, broken cached data, damaged views, corrupted OST files (for Exchange/Cached mode), or a damaged Outlook profile.
In some cases, Safe Mode isn’t caused by Outlook at all. A shortcut may include a Safe Mode switch (for example, /safe), or a launch parameter may have been added during troubleshooting.

Before You Start: What You Need
- Access to the affected PC running Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Your Outlook account details (email address and password or SSO permissions), especially if you need to recreate a profile.
- If you use Exchange/Office 365 with Cached Exchange Mode, be ready for a short re-sync when the OST rebuilds.
- Basic permission to run Office repairs and changes (you typically need local admin rights for some steps).
How to Confirm Outlook Is Stuck in Safe Mode
Open Outlook. If the title bar shows Safe Mode or Outlook consistently starts in Safe Mode even after you click to restart normally, treat it as a persistent startup issue—not a one-time prompt.
You can also check whether Outlook is still using a Safe Mode switch via your desktop shortcut (covered in Fix #1).
8 Ways to Fix Microsoft Outlook Only Opening in Safe Mode
1) Remove the Safe Mode Switch from the Outlook Shortcut
This is the fastest “sanity check.” If the shortcut is forcing Safe Mode, Outlook will keep doing it every time.

- Right-click your Outlook shortcut on the desktop or taskbar.
- Choose Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, look at the Target field.
- If you see
/safeat the end, remove it and keep the rest intact. - Click Apply > OK, then close and reopen Outlook normally.
If the Target doesn’t mention /safe, proceed to the next fix.
2) Disable Problem Add-ins (Fastest Fix)
Add-ins are the #1 reason Outlook falls back to Safe Mode. Even if you don’t remember installing anything, updates to security tools, PDF add-ins, CRM plugins, or mail merge tools can break compatibility.

- Open Outlook in Safe Mode (if it’s already doing that, keep it open).
- Go to File > Options.
- Select Add-ins.
- At the bottom next to Manage, pick COM Add-ins and click Go….
- Uncheck the add-ins one by one (or disable all), click OK.
- Restart Outlook normally.
If Outlook starts correctly after disabling add-ins, re-enable them gradually (one at a time) until you find the offender.
3) Reset the Navigation Pane, Views, and Toolbar Settings
Corrupted UI state can cause repeated crashes during startup. Resetting the navigation pane and views often fixes this without touching your mailbox data.
Recommended Free Tools
- Close Outlook completely.
- Press Win + R, type
outlook.exe /resetnavpane, press Enter. - Open Outlook again. If it still fails, close Outlook.
- Press Win + R again, type
outlook.exe /cleanviews, press Enter. - Test Outlook in normal mode.
If your email is IMAP-based or you use multiple accounts, also consider removing custom folder pane behavior by testing with a temporary minimal setup (see the profile fix if needed).
4) Turn Off Hardware Graphics Acceleration
Hardware acceleration issues can crash Outlook’s rendering pipeline, especially on certain GPU drivers. Turning it off can stop the Safe Mode loop.
- Open Outlook in Safe Mode.
- Go to File > Options.
- Select Advanced.
- Under Display, check Disable hardware graphics acceleration.
- Click OK and restart Outlook normally.
If this fixes it, update your graphics driver later to restore performance. For now, stability beats speed.

5) Update Microsoft 365 Apps and Windows Components
Safe Mode can persist due to bugs fixed in later builds. Updating Office and Windows is worth doing even if you already installed updates recently—sometimes the Office channel lags behind.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open any Office app (Word or Outlook).
- Go to File > Account.
- Under Product Information, confirm you’re using Microsoft 365 Apps (or Outlook version).
- Click Update Options > Update Now.
- After updates finish, restart Windows and then open Outlook normally.
On Windows 11/10, also run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, then reboot.
6) Run Office Quick Repair, Then Online Repair
If updates don’t help, the Office install may be missing or damaged. Microsoft’s repair tools can restore components that affect Outlook startup.
- Close Outlook and all Office apps.
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 (or your Office version like Microsoft Office 2019), then choose Change.
- Pick Quick Repair and run it. Reboot if prompted.
- If it doesn’t fix Safe Mode, repeat the steps and choose Online Repair.
- After Online Repair completes, reboot and test Outlook.
Online Repair is slower because it fetches files from Microsoft. It’s usually the one that resolves stubborn startup loops.
7) Recreate Your Outlook Profile
If your Outlook profile is corrupted, Outlook may not reliably load the mailbox store—forcing Safe Mode every time. Recreating the profile is a strong fix that doesn’t require deleting your mailbox.

- Close Outlook.
- Press Win + R, type
control mlcfg32.cpl, press Enter. - In Mail setup, click Show Profiles.
- Select your current profile and click Remove only if you’re comfortable recreating it (or create a new profile first—see next step).
- Click Add, enter a new profile name.
- Set up your account again (Exchange/Microsoft 365 sign-in usually uses modern auth).
- Select the new profile as Always use this profile.
- Click Apply > OK.
- Open Outlook in normal mode.
If you still need data like rules or signatures, ensure you’re using the same mailbox identity so server-side settings remain intact.
8) Rebuild the OST by Removing/Regenerating the Cached Mail Store
For Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft 365 with Cached Exchange Mode enabled, a corrupted OST can repeatedly crash Outlook. Rebuilding it forces Outlook to re-sync mailbox content.
- Close Outlook.
- Press Win + R, type
control, open Mail (or usecontrol mlcfg32.cpl). - Click Data Files….
- Select the cached Exchange data file (commonly an .ost file), click Open File Location (or note the path).
- Close the file location window and return to Windows Explorer.
- Rename the .ost file (for example, add
.old) so it won’t be used. - Reopen Outlook. It should create a fresh OST and start syncing again.
Expect indexing and sync to take time depending on mailbox size and network speed. If you’re on a metered connection, monitor bandwidth usage during the rebuild.
Common Mistakes and Edge Cases
- Disabling add-ins but forgetting another add-in type: In Outlook, COM add-ins are only one area. Also check File > Options > Add-ins and repeat for Outlook Add-ins and Exchange Add-ins if present.
- Using the same broken profile: If Outlook still starts in Safe Mode after UI resets, profile corruption becomes more likely—use the profile fix (#7).
- Hardware acceleration fix while drivers are outdated: Turning it off can help immediately, but long-term stability often improves when you update GPU drivers.
- Multiple Outlook versions: If you have both Click-to-Run and an older MSI-installed Office, repair might behave unpredictably. Confirm you’re repairing the correct installation in Programs and Features.
- Shared mailboxes and delegates: If only one account triggers Safe Mode (for example, a specific shared mailbox), profile rebuild plus OST rebuild targeting that account is usually the best route.
Troubleshooting Checklist if None of the Fixes Work
When Outlook stubbornly keeps launching in Safe Mode after all eight fixes, treat it like a repeatable diagnosis problem. The goal is to identify whether the crash is add-in, data, or system-level.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Confirm the exact trigger: Try starting Outlook with a clean switch by using
outlook.exe /profiles(select a new minimal profile) and test in normal mode. - Test in a new Windows user profile: If a new user profile works, something in your Windows user context (like per-user add-ins) is likely causing the crash.
- Check for security tooling integrations: Antivirus and endpoint protection sometimes inject Outlook add-ins. Temporarily disable or update the relevant tool, then retry.
- Review recent changes: If the Safe Mode behavior started right after an Office update or a driver update, roll back the most recent change and retest.
- Capture Office crash logs: Outlook typically writes logs you can forward to IT or use for self-diagnosis. Look in Office log locations tied to your Office version/channel.
- Reinstall Office (last resort): If repair fails twice, a full reinstall of Microsoft 365 Apps may be the fastest reset—especially if multiple corruption points exist.
Bottom Line
Microsoft Outlook only opening in Safe Mode usually comes down to one of a few recurring issues: a forced Safe Mode switch, a failing add-in, corrupted Outlook UI state, a damaged profile/OST, or an Office installation problem. Start with the shortcut check and add-in disabling—then move through resets, repair, and profile/OST rebuilds if needed.

FAQ
Q: Will rebuilding the OST delete my emails?
No. Renaming the OST forces Outlook to re-download content from your mailbox. Your mailbox data stays on Exchange/Microsoft 365.
Q: I disabled add-ins, but Safe Mode still appears. What now?
Try the UI reset commands (/resetnavpane and /cleanviews) and then rebuild the profile. If the issue continues, run Online Repair and disable hardware acceleration.
Q: Can Safe Mode happen only when a specific mailbox is used?
Yes. That pattern strongly suggests an OST or profile problem for that specific account. Recreate the profile and rebuild the OST for that mailbox.

Safe Mode doesn’t permanently modify them by itself. However, UI resets can change views and navigation layout, and profile rebuilds may affect local-only settings—server-based items usually remain.
