For Microsoft, install Office means downloading and setting up the apps on a device. Reinstall Office means putting them back after removal or setting them up on another device allowed by your license. In the usual case, you sign in with the Microsoft account tied to the license, choose the product, and install it. Activation is a separate step.
What “install” and “reinstall” mean
Installing puts the Office apps on a computer. Reinstalling describes doing that again—whether the apps were removed from the same device or you are setting them up on another device your license permits. Reinstalling does not, by itself, mean you must buy Office again. First find the account that owns or manages the license.

Microsoft’s usual process is account-based: sign in, select the Office product associated with the license, download it, and follow the setup instructions. The exact steps depend on the product, operating system, and license. Microsoft explains why an account is required, and provides version-specific download and installation guidance for Office 2021, 2019, and 2016.
Where to start the reinstall
Microsoft 365 home subscription
Sign in at microsoft365.com with the account associated with the subscription, then select the option to install the apps. Use the on-screen instructions for your device.
#1 Best Overall
- Classic Office Apps | Includes classic desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with ease.
- Install on a Single Device | Install classic desktop Office Apps for use on a single Windows laptop, Windows desktop, MacBook, or iMac.
- Ideal for One Person | With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.

One-time Office purchase
Sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the redeemed product and choose the Office product listed in that account. A product key is generally used once to redeem the product and connect it to an account; it normally is not entered again for each reinstall. If Microsoft says the key has already been used, sign in with the account used when it was redeemed. See Microsoft’s guidance for the “product key has already been used” message.
Work or school account
You may be able to begin at microsoft365.com, but your organization controls whether the account has an Office license and which installations it allows. If there is no install option, contact your organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator. Employer purchase programs and volume-license products can have separate instructions; Microsoft provides Workplace Discount Program installation guidance.

What can change the steps
| What differs | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| License type | Microsoft 365 subscriptions and one-time Office purchases have different license terms and installation allowances. Check the terms for your exact product before adding or transferring an installation. |
| Computer and Office version | PC and Mac instructions differ, and steps can vary by Office release. The cited Microsoft guide covers Office 2021, 2019, and 2016; do not assume every screen or step applies to other releases. |
| Account management | A home license is managed through its associated Microsoft account. A work or school license may be controlled by an administrator, who can determine whether installation is available. |
| Connection or installer problem | If the normal download is blocked by a proxy, firewall, antivirus software, or connection problem, Microsoft identifies the offline installer as a possible workaround. Follow the current instructions for your product. |
Installation and activation are different
Installing downloads and sets up the apps; activating confirms that Office can use the license. After installation, open an Office app and follow any activation prompts. If the apps are already installed but Office reports a licensing problem, use Microsoft’s reactivation guidance rather than downloading the apps again automatically.

If the normal installation does not work
- No install option: confirm you signed in with the account associated with the license. For a work or school account, ask the administrator whether a license and installation are available.
- Download or setup fails: check Microsoft’s “Something went wrong” troubleshooting guidance. Microsoft lists the offline installer as a possible route around certain connection, proxy, firewall, or antivirus issues.
- You need to remove Office before trying again: Microsoft’s uninstall troubleshooter has Windows and Office-version requirements, and its cited instructions say it cannot currently uninstall Office 2024. Check the live uninstall instructions for your version before using a tool.
- The install button does nothing: follow Microsoft’s specific install-button troubleshooting page.
Microsoft’s installation routes and interface can change. Use its current instructions for your precise Office version, operating system, and license rather than assuming an older guide applies unchanged.
