Office Home 2024 is a one-time purchase of classic Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for one Mac or PC. It does not include future major-version upgrades or Microsoft 365 services such as OneDrive storage. If you need Outlook, look at Office Home & Business 2024. Microsoft 365 is a subscription with ongoing app feature updates and plan-dependent benefits, including cloud storage and use across multiple devices. The right fit depends on the apps, devices, services, and upgrade cycle you need.
What you get with each option
| What matters | Office 2024 one-time purchase | Microsoft 365 subscription |
|---|---|---|
| Mac apps | Office Home 2024 includes classic Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. Office Home & Business 2024 adds Outlook. Microsoft’s U.S. Office 2024 page lists the editions. | Current Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote apps for Mac; benefits vary by plan. Microsoft’s comparison covers the subscription differences. |
| Payment and upgrades | Pay once for the license. Security updates are available, but new feature updates and an upgrade to a later major release are not included; a later release must be purchased separately. | Pay monthly or annually. App feature updates continue while the subscription is active. |
| Devices and people | The consumer license is for one PC or Mac. | Eligible consumer plans can be installed on a user’s devices and signed into on up to five devices simultaneously. Sharing is available on eligible plans. |
| Cloud storage and services | No Microsoft 365 cloud storage or bundled services such as OneDrive, Exchange Online, or SharePoint Online. | Storage and services depend on the plan. Microsoft describes up to 10 TB across supported plan types; that is not a universal allowance for every plan. Its U.S. sales page lists Microsoft 365 Family with up to 6 TB, or 1 TB per person for six people. |
| Offline use | Installed apps can be used offline after installation and activation. | Installed apps can also be used offline, but Microsoft advises connecting at least once a month to avoid reduced functionality mode. Files stored only online require a connection unless synced locally. |
| Support | Support resources are available; the channel depends on the purchase and issue. | Ongoing support is included with the listed subscription plans. |

Which Office 2024 edition includes Outlook?
Office Home 2024
This edition includes classic Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for one Mac or PC. Outlook is not listed among its apps.
Office Home & Business 2024
This edition adds Outlook to the Office Home app set. If Outlook is essential but you do not want a subscription, check this edition rather than assuming it comes with Office Home 2024. Microsoft’s Office 2024 FAQ describes the one-time-purchase suite. Access is PC-only, not a Mac app in these consumer Mac bundles.

What “one-time purchase” does—and does not—mean
The upfront payment buys the included Office 2024 license, not every future release. Office 2024 receives security updates, but it does not receive new feature updates or include the next major version. If you want that later release, you would need to purchase it separately. Microsoft explains the distinction in its Office 2024 FAQ and product comparison.
One-time purchase also does not mean the apps are wholly disconnected from online services. Microsoft says Office suites exclude Microsoft 365 services such as OneDrive, Exchange Online, and SharePoint Online, as well as some cloud-backed features, including PowerPoint Designer and Excel Data Types. See Microsoft’s Office suites overview.

Compare the cost over the time you expect to use it
There is no single useful price comparison without a country, current offer, subscription plan, and ownership period. Microsoft’s cited sales page is for the U.S.; prices and plan terms elsewhere may differ. Compare the local one-time price with the recurring cost of the specific Microsoft 365 plan over your intended period. Include a future Office purchase only if you expect to move to a later major release. Microsoft’s subscription information and U.S. Office 2024 page are starting points; verify the current localized offer before buying.

Offline use and practical limits
Both options’ installed apps can work offline after installation and activation. Connectivity is still needed for installation, activation, updates, billing management, and retrieving files that exist only online. For Microsoft 365, Microsoft advises connecting at least monthly; otherwise the apps can enter reduced functionality mode. If you use OneDrive files, make them available offline by syncing them locally before you lose internet access. Details are in Microsoft’s comparison.
