Choose Office Home 2024 if you want to pay once for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote on one PC or Mac, and are comfortable keeping that release rather than receiving future feature upgrades. Choose Microsoft 365 if you want ongoing feature updates, use multiple devices or share with a household, or would benefit from included cloud storage and connected services. There is no universal price winner: the better value depends on how long you use it, how many people need it, and which included services you would otherwise pay for.

Which one fits your needs?
Choose Office Home 2024 for one computer and a one-time payment
Office Home 2024 makes sense when one person needs the included classic desktop apps on one eligible PC or Mac and prefers a single upfront purchase to a recurring subscription. The purchase covers the included release, not future major versions. Its feature set stays fixed, although Microsoft says it receives security updates during its support period.

Choose Microsoft 365 for ongoing features, devices, or household sharing
Microsoft 365 is the stronger fit if you want new app features as Microsoft releases them, switch among devices, or want more than one person to use the apps. The listed consumer plans support sign-in on up to five devices at once, while Family, Premium, and Pro allow sharing with up to five additional people. The exact apps, sharing rules, and benefits depend on the plan, so compare its terms rather than assuming every subscription is identical.

Microsoft 365 consumer plans include cloud storage in Microsoft’s comparison; Office 2024 does not include extra online storage. A one-time Office suite also does not include Microsoft 365 services such as OneDrive, Exchange Online, and SharePoint Online, and some cloud-backed app features may be unavailable. The specific features and services you can use can depend on the edition, account, and plan. Microsoft’s comparison and feature and service details explain the distinction.

What do they cost, and when does the subscription catch up?
The Microsoft Store US prices returned for this comparison were $179.99 once for Office Home 2024; $99.99 per year or $9.99 per month for Microsoft 365 Personal; $129.99 per year or $12.99 per month for Family; and $199.99 per year or $19.99 per month for Premium. These are US Store listings, not global prices, and prices and promotions can change. Check the current Microsoft Store product and plan pages for your region before buying.
Comparing only the listed Office Home 2024 one-time price with Microsoft 365 Personal’s annual price, $179.99 is roughly the cost of 1.8 years of Personal. That is a price-only calculation, not a value verdict: Personal also includes continuing feature updates, multi-device use, and storage, none of which is bundled with Office Home 2024. For a household, compare the subscription cost against the number of people who will actually use it and their storage needs.

Apps, operating systems, and offline use
Office Home 2024 is listed for one PC or one Mac, while both Office 2024 and Microsoft 365 have Windows and Mac options. Eligibility and included apps depend on the selected edition and platform, so check the plan page if you need a particular app or operating system. Microsoft lists Outlook among the apps in consumer Microsoft 365 plans, while Home 2024’s listed apps are Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
Microsoft says installed Microsoft 365 apps can work offline after installation and activation. Internet access is needed for initial setup and activation, updates, billing management, and documents stored in the cloud. Microsoft advises connecting at least monthly; otherwise, app functionality may be reduced. Offline use does not remove the need to reconnect for cloud files or subscription management. What Office 2024’s support date means
Microsoft Lifecycle gives Office 2024 Home and Home & Business editions for Windows and Mac a retirement date of October 10, 2029. Treat that as the published support horizon for those editions, not as a promise of new features through that date: Microsoft says Office 2024 receives security updates but not ongoing feature upgrades. Lifecycle policies and listings can change, so verify the Office 2024 Lifecycle entry before purchase.

- Count users and devices. If one person will use one computer, Office Home 2024’s license scope may be enough. For multiple devices or household users, compare the relevant Microsoft 365 plan’s current sharing and sign-in limits.
- List the apps and services you actually need. Check whether you require Outlook, Access, Publisher, cloud storage, or Microsoft 365-connected services; do not assume the Home 2024 app bundle includes them.
- Decide whether new features are important. If you want feature updates as they arrive, choose a subscription. If the included Office 2024 apps meet your needs and a fixed feature set is acceptable, a one-time license may suit you.
- Compare the cost over your expected period of use. Use prices for your country and the exact plan. For a shared plan, include the number of actual users and factor in the storage and services they would use.
- Confirm platform and terms before paying. Check the selected edition’s Windows or Mac eligibility, included apps, renewal terms, and Microsoft’s current support information.
This comparison covers consumer editions and US Store prices. Microsoft 365 business and enterprise plans have different bundles, licensing, and pricing, so organizations should evaluate the applicable business plan instead of using this consumer comparison.
