Neowin reported on October 6, 2026, that worldwide rollout is now targeted to start at the end of October and finish by the end of November. Those are rollout targets, not a confirmed availability date.
What is delayed?
The planned change is a guided rename-and-move experience for items whose paths are too long for the OneDrive Windows desktop sync client. Under the current behavior described in reporting, users are told to shorten a path exceeding 520 characters, and syncing may remain stopped until the issue is resolved. Neowin’s October 6, 2026 report says the improved workflow is delayed by about a month.

The planned workflow is intended to show how many characters exceed the limit, identify path elements that can be renamed, and allow renaming even when the path is longer than 260 characters. The report describes a more useful way to fix an over-limit path; it does not say Microsoft is increasing OneDrive’s 520-character sync limit.

How long is the delay?
Neowin reports that worldwide general availability is expected to begin at the end of October 2026 and finish by the end of November 2026. Treat both dates as targets: rollout timing can change, and the report does not establish that every affected user will receive the workflow on the same day.

The report identifies Microsoft 365 Message Center notice MC1422063 as the source of the rollout update. It says administrators do not need to take action for deployment because the change is expected to roll out automatically to affected OneDrive software. Admins can adjust support guidance to reflect the reported schedule, but should not present the feature as available before it reaches their users.
Who is affected by the issue?
The report concerns the OneDrive for Business Windows desktop sync client. It does not establish that the same workflow or schedule applies to personal OneDrive or the macOS client.

There are several different path-length figures in the reporting, and they describe different constraints rather than interchangeable limits:
| Context | Reported limit | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| OneDrive sync client | 520 characters | The sync-path limit implicated in the reported error. Neowin |
| OneDrive/SharePoint cloud path | 400 characters | A separate cloud-path limit described by the secondary technical explainer; it is not the 520-character sync-client limit. WindowsForum |
| Windows File Explorer and apps | 260 characters | A separate legacy behavior described by the same explainer, attributed to Win32 API behavior rather than NTFS. WindowsForum |
These figures come from reporting and a secondary technical explainer, not from Microsoft support documentation independently reviewed here. In particular, the separate 260-character Windows/app behavior does not mean the planned OneDrive workflow raises the sync client’s limit.

What happens while users wait?
Until the workflow reaches a user, the reported workaround remains to shorten the over-limit path so the sync client can proceed. Where a user encounters the error, they may need to rename a folder or file, or move it to a location with a shorter path. The forthcoming feature is meant to guide that process rather than remove the underlying limit.
The Neowin report calls max-path errors common but does not provide a verified count or percentage, so there is no substantiated prevalence figure to estimate how many users are affected.

What happens after rollout?
After the feature becomes available to an affected Windows sync client, users should be able to use its guided prompts to identify over-limit path elements and rename or move items. Availability remains subject to the reported rollout schedule; the report does not confirm a specific user’s deployment date or establish a change to the 520-character cap.
